Unacceptable Bus Route

We are new to a district. We are moving from the city to the country. My childs new bus stop, is half a mile from our house. We live in a neighborhood setting and she is the only child on this route, they had to add our house in to this stop (they sounded annoyed). Is this acceptable? They told me I would just have to drive her to the bus stop everyday. Am I crazy here or should I be speaking to someone in charge about moving the stop closer. I understand they wont come right to my door, but not even in walking distance, I cant even see the stop because it is on another street around the corner. Just looking for a little advice. maybe I'm stressing out because of the move but do they really think a 1/2 mile away bus route is ok? BTW she's 7.

I would rather not have to drive her to school, if I had to, then I would transfer her to a closer school. We are in between 3 towns and for some reason our neighborhood goes to the farther town so I would be driving her to a school 10 miles away rather than a closer school about 4 miles away. Dont ask? I have no idea how this district is set up, lol.

What can I do next?

Wow that surpises me. I think each district has different rules but I would keep talking to the trasportation department. My daughter started school this year. The stop they set up for her was on another block with railroad tracks inbetween. I kept calling and got a new stop but that one was still out of my site. Long story short I got them to add a stop that I could watch my daughter from my windows.
I had to keep calling and plead my case it took well over two weeks. I drove her to school until it was fixed.
good luck

My daughter was expected to walk almost 1 mile to school in kindergarten,(Burnsville, MN) on a road that had no sidewalk, next to the scary woods and had to cross at a busy 4way stop, she not only crossed city lines but county borders as well. It was all legit and legal for the school to expect this. I totally drove her as there is no way I'd let her walk herself like that. It's perfectl legal to make your child walk 1/2mile to a stop, although not safe or convienant for you.

I and many many other parents fought the school, board what worked for us was to find something dangerous about the walk and use that as our case. We couldn't whine to the school board that the walk was to long or anything we needed a solid reason. We finally won and got school buses.

I agree...while it is not preferable, their rules are not unreasonable and driving her to the stop is probably your best option.

The district I grew up in has kindergarteners who live less than a 1/2 mile and all other elementary kids who live less than a mile from school walk. I know that bus stops are usually closer, but kids her age are often required to get themselves even longer distances. If that makes you uncomfortable, then you could drive her.

In our district, if you are within 2 miles of the school, you are expected to walk. We do have the option to pay for busing, which we have chosen, as we are JUST within that 2 mile distance. No way would I have my elementary kids walking to school in MN in the winter. I am glad we have the option to pay and have the bus. So I don't think a bus stop 1/2 mile away is unreasonable, unfortunately.
