Unisex Room Colors

I will be moving my daughter into my son's room pretty soon. She is currently in the nursery and we're having the other baby in the summer. My son's room is a blue-ish periwinkle on the walls with navy curtains. No real theme going on, but it definately looks masculine. I'd like to redecorate the room to look more unisex for my daughter. Any ideas without breaking the bank or redoing the ENTIRE room? I don't need a theme really, just a great unisex color scheme.

What can I do next?

I agree with another responder, keep the room the periwinkle but maybe paint two of the walls a shade of yellow. I would go to the paint store and find that color blue and see what colors are complimentary to it. I would also give each of them the wall their bed is up against for their own theme that shows off their individuality. It will make them feel special with the new baby coming!

Good luck and enjoy!

Probably not the advice you are looking for, but a thought. Do you know if you are having a boy or girl? Depending on the sizes of your rooms, you could also put the new baby in the room with the child of the same sex. When pregnant with my second (a girl) we were planning to move my son out of the 'nursery' into the larger room. I painted his new room a sort of tan color planning to decorate with blues & greens. For some reason that escapes my memory, we didn't move him right away, and when baby #3 came along- another girl- we figured there was no point moving him when the other room was bigger & would better hold 2 kids. I was able to keep the walls the same color, just added pink accents. They have never had any sleep issues, my oldest daughter slept right through all the night wakings- in case that is your concern- and I have heard this from other mothers as well, most kids adapt very well to those sounds.
If you are firm in your decision to move your daughter, I agree with the advice to keep the wall color & find some fun curtains to make it more unisex. Also, if you do some searching, you might be able to find bed linens that match as far as design goes, but differ in color for boys & girls.
Good luck on the room & Congrats on the baby!

My son and daughter share a room. I bought their stuff from ikea. They have the same stripped bedding with animals on them, but hers is red/pink/orange/white and his is blue/green/white.....they have a rug that i put in the middle of the room that had ALL of those colors in it. I got curtains as well. That was a really cheap way to do it, Ikea is reasonable.

I would keep the walls the same color. Buy different curtains (maybe a pastel color or pattern). And put down a throw rug. And decorate the area where their beds are. ie you could do animals or bugs (butterflies, ladybugs, dragonflies for her & grasshoppers, ants, etc for him). I would look at places like HOME GOODS, they have a great kids section, IKEA or even Michaels Arts & Crafts. They have a bunch of wooden shapes that you could hang from the ceiling or hang on the wall.

I agree with leaving the walls the periwinkle color. That is the color we did in our nursery. We first had a boy, and added more masculine things, like bugs. Our second was a girl and now the color looks more purple that we brought in a bunch of pink and purple things. She now has fairies as the theme in her room.

If the room is Blueish-periwinkle that means it probably have a slight purple under tone?? I bet if you just got some pretty pastel-colored striped curtains and a throw rug-it would totally transform the room. The catalog "Lilly's Kids" or the JCPenney home catalog has alot of inexpensive curtains and also Walmart has a great kids section in the bedding dept. You would be amazed at what some great curtains can do! No need to repaint!
Good luck

ok - so if you use the IDEAS ONLY out of pottery barn kids (their stuff is expensive) you can find some cute ideas...

i have scene denim used as the "main color" and then gender related colors on "their" sides of the room...

also - doing a red, white and blue patriotic theme is really cute for both genders..

how about keeping the navy curtains and painting the room a nice bright yellow?

in my kids playroom we blocked off squares with masking tape and did multi colored squares on one wall and that was fun and defintaley unisex.

have fun!

For a quick change what if you keep the periwinkle and pick a neutral color (maybe a white or subtle yellow) and paint one or two walls that color? For continuity buy matching comforters that coordinate with your paint colors.
