Sorry ladies I hate to ask but dont have insurance at the moment so I dont want to go to the Dr unless I have too. 4 months ago I had a baby. At my 6 week check up I started birth control pills on the sunday after my period as directed. My period starts the week before is suppose to accourding to the pill package and last almost 2 weeks. Plus the first 3-4 days my period is so heavy that I go through a pad if I dont change about every hour and have to get up several times at night. I dont really have any cramps to speak of. I never had trouble like this before I always had sort light periods. Is this normal, my body getting adjusted it or should I be worried about something else.

What can I do next?

Thanks to all the replys. I made an appointment with the local planned parent hood. I tried my doctor but he seemed to have moved his office.

I have always been advised that if you soak through a pad an hour you need to seek medical attention. I don't have insurance either so i definitely understand your concern. I recommend if you have no other options, calling the county health dept.

Mine started to do that after I had my daughter which is my only child. My periods got so bad that my back would hurt so bad that I could hardly walk for the first day. I talked to several people and they said that their periods had done the same thing after childbirth. Being on the pill should help but you may want to talk to a dr. because if the pill has not regulated them, then it could be something like endometerosis, or something else. My dr said the only way to control mine was to go on the pill, buy my age I didn't want to so I elected to have a hysterectomy. I knew we were not able to have anymore children.. It has been a life safer.

Same thing happened to me. Expept I switched from the breastfeeding pill back to my orthtri. Durning that switch, it was a week early lasted forever, and was very heavy. Just this month (after 5 months of being on it) finally it is on time, and light and only 3 days. I don't know why, I never went to the dr, just didn't have the time, and since nothing was "wrong" I decided to wait. But, it worked it's self out. I don't really have advice just I know what you are experiencing and for me, it worked it's self out.

GOod luck, sorry.

Hi S.,
I am a mom of 4, so I know where you are coming from. After my 4th child I had the unusually heavy periods for a short time also. I would definately advise you to see your Gynocologist though if it continues to be irregular for more than a few months. HTH!

My older sister had that for months after the birth of her second child. It turns out she had retained some of the placenta. They had to do a D&C and said she was lucky she didn't get an infection. This is definitely a doctor issue...

It could be your body is trying to adjust. I've noticed that my cycle was never the same after I gave birth. Before I ever had children my cycle was a lot like yours is now. There's FREE or sliding scale fee clinics out here. I don't know where you live but I know it's got to be one near you. There's Swope parkway in the inner city & they may be able to guide you in the right direction. It could also be that your dosage might be too strong or your body is rejecting that brand name of pills...there's other's. Good luck & God Bless!

Hi S.! Congratulations on the birth of your princess! When it comes to a woman's reproductive health, it's important to see a professional, whenever possible. This situation may be as simple as needing a different strength of birth control pill (breakthrough bleeding is a fair indicator of this). Having said that, I am concerned about the HEAVY bleeding. Without insurance, your options are somewhat limited, but Planned Parenthood has WONDERFUL doctors (some of the best) and is quite affordable. (your religious affiliation may prohibit this, but your health is important..... you have babies who depend on you) I don't know your OB-GYN, but if it were mine, she would care enough to work with her patient through a financial difficulty. All my best to you. I hope you get the care you need and deserve! Blessings, R.

Your problem is a very common one! Most women have hormone imbalances that are due to the enviroment and things like synthetic hormones we use for birth control. You should look into a natural hormone balancing cream. I have seen huge success with regulating my cycle, improving my moodiness and my hormonal acne by beginning Arbonne's Prolief cream. It is safe, easy to use and of the highest quality. Most women significantly benefit from it! I have FREE information available if you'd like to take a peek. I also would like to tell you about a couple of fantastic books. They are written by health professionals and are a fabulous starting point to become proactive in your healthcare.

I had this problem, though I wasn't on birth control pills, one summer, where I had a period that lasted nearly 3 months. The doctor said I had a problem with my hormones. Try Black Cohash capsules, which you can find in a health food store, and ceyanne (sp?) pepper in capsules. The pepper helps control bleeding, the Cohash has nature 'hormones' that will help correct things. Good luck and enjoy those babies! They grow so quickly...my oldest is 35, and youngest is almost 25. Where does the time go?

If you don't have health insurance right now, consider going to your local county health dept. It's alot cheaper than a doctor and just as professional. You pill strength probably needs to be adjusted. The same thing happened to me after my second child. It was a case of needing to readjust the strength and type of birth control. I wouldn't worry just yet. Give your local county health dept a call and tell them what's happening and they should be able to tell you something. If you don't feel comfrotable calling them, call your doctors office and tell them. They may adjust your prescription without having to see.

i think you may be on too low of a dosage of birth control pills. can you call your doctor's office and ask them for advice over the phone without getting charged? could you go to the free health clinics around the KC area? the amount of bleeding you are having concerns me. it could be an indication of a more serious problem. for your peace of mind and the future of your children, you may need to look into working toward a family budget that includes health insurance for yourself. one hospital stay and your family could be in serious financial problems.

Hi S.,
It sounds like you might be just getting used to it, but if you're bleeding that heavily it might be a sign of something different. Is this your first period after starting? If so then it could be that or something more severe. If you've had a number of period since and they seem to all be like that then I would think that it's probably you're body getting used to it, I would pay attention. If it doesn't resolve soon, then I would talk to a doctor about it, it might be a sign that it's not the right birth control for you..they have many kinds out there and not all of them are right for everyone.

It could be an issue of pill strength...you may need a milder one for now while the hormones are still a bit crazy adjusting post partum, but I also found after my second child that my period was incredibly heavy. I bled through pads regularly. It adjusted after about 3-ish months but those first few months were ungodly and I needed iron pills because I was exhausted as well. If you are returning to the pill after being pregnant, your memory of lighter periods may be because of being on the pill. I was on the pill for years and when I went off, after a few months my period went back to a heavier flow and longer duration than I remembered in the past. Now it comes when it wants to but I suspect that's perimenopause!

If there is a free clinic in your area you should go to give yourself peace of mind...planned parenthood should be able to help as well.

S., Avoiding the doctor may not be possible. Check first with the web site for your particular pill. See what the side effects are. If it is the same one you were on before, I would say you need to see the doctor. If not, you may need to change the particular perscription. In which case, you will need to call or see the doctor. Bleeding rates of one pad per hour is barely acceptable. You are losing too much blood. See about this soon!

I had the same problem after having my son. I had always had pretty light & easy periods because I was on the pill for so long. I had a c-section, and from talking to other women who've had them, that seems to make a difference too. You may be able to just call in to your doctor and ask if they can try you on a new prescription without going in. With that type of thing, since you've already been examined, they may just call in something different for you to try. Good luck!

I would call the doctor that prescribed the pills and explain to the nurse what is happening. I'm thinking that they would talk to the doctor and he would prescribe another pill that might be better for you. I just took my daughter to the OB/GYN for her pre-marital exam. He prescribed a pill for her and said that if it didn't work (as in had horrible side effects) to call and he'd change the prescription. You've already seen the doctor, and I'd think that a call would do the trick.

You need to go to see a gyn. You should not be bleeding that much. Two weeks for a period off or especially on the pill is two long especially with the amount you are describing. It is much better to get this investigated early. There are a few different things that could be causing this but it is considered abnormal and should be investigated. It is easy to try to rationalize this and put it off (I understand this as I would think about it) but make an appt and get it checked out. Take care of yourself. Here is a link I found and I am sure there is a lot of other information on the internet so don't investigate too much and scare yourself. Go talk to your doctor. http://womenshealth.about.com/cs/abnormalbleeding/a/abnut...

S.,

I used to work in an OB/GYN office your situation is not completely unheard of. It is not the way to keep going though. Since you do not have insurance the best thing to do is find Planned Parenthood type of clinic and fixing your problem could be as easy as changing your birth control pill. Alot of the time after pregnancy and all of the hormones changing it will affect your cyle. Your main concern when having heavy cycles is to not become anemic so make sure you are taking a good multivitamin.

Hope this helps in some way =)

I was always told that if you're soaking a pad an hour you need to go to the Dr. There can be health risks from loosing that much blood. It could be you need a different pill. But since it's abnormal from your usual periods and you're bleeding so heavily you should give the doc a call. The pill really should regulate your period so the fact that it's starting while you're still taking "active" pills is odd. I know the insurance bit is rough, so you can always go to a Planned Parenthood. Much easier on the wallet then and ob/gyn.

I did exactly that too. I was told if it didn't stop after a length of time (don't remember how long) that we'd have to look into if a small piece of tissue was left in there and the body is trying to get rid of it and might need D&C, but do nothing for a whie and it did resolve itself. It is normal to bleed more with each kid, I was told. You could take iron pills if it makes you feel sick. I'd call your OB/GYN that delivered for reassurance. You can always talk to the nurse.

That is not normal. I would call the doctor and get a different strength of birth control pills. Yours may not be strong enough. That is what happened to me. I was put on the lowest dose and had break through bleeding all during the month. Call the doctor!
