Unusual Rash on 13 Month Old

My son has a rash. Looks like a sunburn. He hasn't been outside in a long time so it's NOT a sunburn.

Yesterday evening it was in his arm pits, the fold of his elbow, his ears, back of his neck, his back and parts of his torso.

Now, most of that is gone, however, it's everywhere else today. His nose, eyes, cheeks, chin, fingers, arms, lower legs.......

No fever, the rash looks like a sunburn, it does itch him (he's 13 months old and is extra squirmy, and rubs it all the time) where he is rashy -his skin is warm, he has NO fever.

Any ideas??????

Peditrician told us to give him benadryl.......but gezzz, I'm going nuts!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It was probably hives. We e-mailed tons of photos to the pediatrician and he felt pretty confident it was hives from something he was given in the hospital. Last Monday he had surgery to repair his leg. He has psuedoarthrosis so they had to put rods in his tibia and fibula and do a bone graph. He was given TONS of super strong pain meds. So it could have been anything. Poor baby, we couldn't put him in the bath because he is in a body cast. Keep us in your prayers~

Has he had shots lately or been on any medication or tried new food sounds like a allergic reaction, the benedryl is for the itching. Try to remember anything new he has had.

Sounds like perhaps eczyma (SP?) or infitigo (SP?). Both are rashes that are warm to the touch and do not cover the entire body. Infitigo typically will be where there are creases in the body. Crease of elbows, behind knees, crease of the nose, behind ears ect. Hydrocortisone helps to relieve the itchiness. I have also used cool wet washclothes to alleviate the itchiness and pain in the creases of the arms. Hope this helps. I don't know much about eczyma.

Call your doctor. It's probably one of the childhood viruses like fifth disease. The rash doesn't appear until the fever (and contagiousness) is gone, so he may have had a low grade fever in the days before his rash appeared (without any other symptoms). It means he's probably fine now, but you might want to call anyway, to rule out scarlet fever (a strep infection, basically). By the way daughter tends to get rashes when she gets viruses; apparently some children just react that way. Good luck!
Oh- one other thing: Banana Boat Baby sunscreen gives my daughter a rash- did you use that on him?

Have you ruled out strep? Last month, our daughter got a similar rash, and I had no idea strep in young kids can show itself as a rash. She was not complaining of feeling ill, was eating and drinking fine, and we had not noticed any fever. But when I took her to the ped, they did a strep test, and sure enough, that's what it was. Another thing a few people told me they thought it could be was roseola, but that rash apparently appears after a high fever. Best of luck.

This sounds like an allergic or contact rash. I would try zyrtec (1 tsp is a reasonable dose for his age) once a day and I bet it will disappear. You can check with your doctor first about the zyrtec just to make sure it is safe for YOUR child. Zyrtec lasts longer than Benadryl and is non sedating in general.

My neighbors grandson had the same thing about 2 weeks ago and it ended up being scarlet fevor. The dr told them the same thing, benadryl and it wasn't helping...took him to actually see the dr and the dr said it was scarlet fevor. The dr said it has been going around...might want to check that out.

Could be hives. He may be allergic to something he is coming into contact with. Give him a bath everynight before he goes to bed to wash off any allergens in his skin and wash or change his bedding every day! This may sound psycho but I was told to do this with my "allergic to everything" son and I have noticed a HUGE difference. You might try to look up different rashes on the internet to see if there are any that look like it. You can also use Cortisone as a topical treatment. Be careful with the Benadryl - it can cause hyperness and irritability in small children under the age of 6. My daughter had trouble with it until actually about 4 months ago. If you dont like what your doctor said - get another opinion! Hope that helps a little. E.

Sounds like Hives or heat rash. Or sometimes kids will just get a rash for no reason when they are fighting off a virus. I was just looking up skin conditions the other day. Go to Web MD dot com and they have a column on the left with "Slide Shows". There is a slide show on there of "Skin Conditions" and "Childhood Skin Conditions" You could try to see if it looks like any of those. You could also try putting a topical antihistamine on it too, for the itchiness, like Cortaid or something. Ask the pharmisist what is safe for 13 month olds. Good luck!

ps.. Just saw other response. If it looks like the Scarlet Fever picture on WebMD.. go to the Dr. ASAP!!!!

My mom recently had poison ivy. She was working out in the yard, and got it on her face and neck, but never touched her face and neck while she was outside, so they say it can be airborne. Just a thought.

Hi,my name is M.. And I can relate. Have you changed laundry detergent? Are you feeding him something different. And never put brandnew clothes on him before washing. You wouldn't believe the process brandnew clothes go through to hang in stores. It is a skin irritating chemical. But, most of all I would alternate what I feed him to see if it is a food allergy.

My ten month old just got over almost the exact same thing. If he looks lik he has slapped cheeks its probably fifths disease..just a virus that has to run its course. Otherwise it could possibley be Parvo virus which is another common childhood rash that has to run its course. It took about 2 weeks for my sons rash to clear. I just gave him tylenol occasionally if he rn a low grade fever otherwise unfortunately nothing treats it just looks worse than it is, it just has to run its course!

Are his cheeks red?? My first thought is Fifths Disease. My daughter had that but at first I thought it was an allergic rash or sunburn. Fifths disease rash looks like small pinpricks and the cheeks appear windburned or like someone slapped their cheeks. Good luck!!

My only thoughts are if you changed soaps or lotion recently. Even Laundry soap, or dryer sheets? Sometimes it takes a little longer with Laundry soap because not everything has been through that new soap, so it comes on more gradual. That is all I can think of, hope that helps some, good luck.

It could be Fifth's disease. Sounds much worse then it is. My 3 yo has never had it, but many kids at her school did. My understanding is that there is no treatment for it, that you just have to ride it out. I hope you sort it out soon!

I think what you are describing is 5ths Disease...IT SOUNDS WORSE THAN IT IS!! My 3 boys have recently had this.It is a virus that ends in a rash. If he recently had collike symtoms and a runny nose...then this with no fever...It is higly likely it is 5ths. It is a rash that is lacey looking all over the body. If it is on his cheeks, it may look like someone slapped him on the cheek. Look this up online and you will see pictures. It was named eons ago with the scary name 5ths disease. Hope this helps!!

To me it sounds like Fifths Disease. It looks like a "slapped cheek" or sunburned appearance and then appears in the bends of the arms and torso. It's not serious - just itchy and annoying. Just try to keep them away from pregnant women - there is a slight chance it could be harmful to the unborn baby. But I'm pretty sure that it very rare. Good luck.

Good Morning Mommy T. I think I have your answer, hope anyway. Eczema! Our 7 month old grandson was covered just like you mentioned your little one. We took him to the Dr. and yeah they said maybe a bacterical rash as it was mostly on his tummy and pelvic area, so they gave us some cream (script) to apply 3 x a day. It didn't go away, just got worse and spread. Was rough and dry and he scratched something aweful when we changed his diaper. I took him back two weeks ago and Dr. said that's Eczema. He said alot of children and adults have it and they treat it but not the right way. He gave us another script plus told us to use a cortisone cream with Aloe & Vit B.

The correct way to treat it is to apply the creams to their bodies when they are WET. Sounds goofy but M. T it worked. The script we got is Nystatin Ointment and I found Hydrocortisone Plus in Equate brand, Wal-Mart. It has the aloe and other vitamines. We were to apply twice a day, if it wasn't bath time to use a soft wash cloth to wet or moisten his body, apply the nystatin then the hyd. plus right on top of it. He told us we should see improvement in couple of days. Mommy T the next day it was going away. By Monday it was completely gone. PT Lord & Dr. Agustin of course.

This little guy had suffered with this rash for over a month or more. Now he looks like a smooth soft little baby again.
The only thing he said as a warning was to not place the nystatin on his face near the eyes and mouth.

I hope this helps in your situation.
Let us know how it goes Mommy T. They are so precious, and we hate it when they are miserable.
K.

Hi!
It sounds a lot like a heat rash to me. My son does that when it gets too warm in the house. Benadryl does help the itching. I just give him extra baths to keep occupied and it goes away in a few days. Good luck!

It cold be fifth's disease, if the there are slightly raised bumps. Kinda looks like the bumps some people have on the backs of their arms. If it is, it's a viral and will have to run its' course. But for the itching an oral benadryl will have to work because with fifth's disease it irritates it more when you put lotions or creams or even give a bath daily.Good luck!
