Hi there! My yongest son has had some issues with acid reflux. He is currently taking prevacid and something else to help him poop. Well since being on this medicine he is starting to spit up A LOT. More then he ever has. So, I call the doctor after about 2 weeks of this to see if this is a normal side effect and she said no she would get to the doctor that we have a few options one being putting rice cereal in his bottle. So, of course when she called back today and states he needs an upper gi I am a little on edge about that. Has anyone had their children go through this? What do they do? Also, she wanted to place him on reglan I told them no because of the things I have heard about it. Any input would be great.

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

I just emailed a lady that is having the same trouble with her 2 month old daughter. I am a board certified licensed acupuncturist and when my son was born he had similar issues. I took him to a myopractor named Ed Sheridan located on 54th St & Thunderbird and it worked miracles. Basically he gently presses on the baby's stomach and helps the stomach and colon descend. I also know of pediatric chinese herbal formulas that would be more beneficial than the prevacid. I would try these options first before having your little one go through an upper gi. You will be amazed at how well your child will respond. If you would like more information you are more than welcome to contact me at ###-###-####.

I went through this with my son when he was 6 months old, but this was 35 years ago, the upper GI consisted of him drinking barium from a bottle, then they xray the babies stomach. But that is just the beginning. What I would suggest is that you change what you are feeding him. More than likely it is a food allergy, and I would try changing to a formula that doesn't contain soy or wheat and see if that makes a difference. I ended up putting my son on an old formula of equal parts of canned evaporated milk, and water with a tablespoon of clear KARO syrup, needless to say he thrived on it, quit spitting up, and this stuff didn't stain his clothes. Goats milk is also very easy on the stomach and very nutritious but I would use that one as a last resort.

Wow, I had a similar life 15 years ago! I was told that it was normal for 1st born males to spit up alot. I think the term was "projectile vomiting" (maybe it was a jewish thing, i can't remember) We didn't do medications in those days just a lot of towels for wiping up embarassing projectile messes. I can't remember the age it stopped, sorry. I figure as long as he is not in pain and his health is not affected, let it ride itself out.

i went through that when my son was 9 months old and its scary because they do put your child oout and this is done at the hospital we did it at PCH and since that were he was when he was born I was ok with it the procidure was all of 15 minutes and then in 15 minutes we got to go back with our son. Pretty much they need to check out all of his funtions to make sure he is ok. With not having a torn throught or anything. It will be fine this is why we have doctors that we trust and they are preventing them from other problems Hell be fine

Try a Polarity therapist and a change in his diet. If he is having problems pooping, he is constipated. Is he on formula with iron and/or cereal fortified with iron? Iron will constipate. Polarity can assist the body's energy to balance, and you might really be surprised at what a difference for your baby. Both of these suggestions are very non-invasive, so why not give them a try?

Hi Mandie,

When my son was 3 wks old he would projectile vomit so they thought he had pyloric stenosis and needed surgery. When the tests ruled it out, they did an upper GI series and still found nothing. So, they said it was severe acid reflux and put him on zantac. After 2 1/2 wks, they changed it to prilosec. He is now 5mths and after several dosage increases, he is about to see a pediatric GI specialist. We have tried everything --- eliminating everything possible from my diet, elevating his crib, sitting upright for 30 minutes, cereal in his bottle, 5 different formulas including Alimentum. I know for many with reflux all of the above has helped them.

Good luck with the upper GI. I hope everything works out for you.
