Urinary Incontinence

After years of putting it off and trying keigles and other exercises, I have to have surgery for urinary incontinence from my pregnancy. The doc wants to do the TVT (tension free vaginal tape) method to provide a 'hammock' for my uretha. After some research, it appears that this will be a fairly easy procedure. My question is, has anyone had this done?? If so, how long were you down and recovering? I have 6 1/2 y/o twins and am trying to plan this out properly. How painful? Problems peeing after? Anything I should be aware of that I may not know yet?? Thanks ladies!!

My mother had this done last year. She had a bad experience where she had to catheterize herself for weeks afterwards. And she occassionally still does when she gets a bladder infection, which is regularly.
My chiropractor said if she had gone to see him, he thinks he could have helped her with it. She was seeing him for a short time anyway, but stopped when her insurance stopped. I would recommend finding a good chiropractor - one you're comfortable with and one who will work with you on payment if your insurance doesn't cover it - and trying that first. It certainly can't hurt!

Have not had it done but am looking into it. My dr. said it takes a week of bedrest although she'd rather it be a week and 1/2 after surgery. After that, no lifting for 6 or 10 weeks (I can't remember which). Not even the baby. Because of that I'm holding off b/c my baby is only 7 months. She also recommended doing at TOT instead of TVT for my stress incontinence.

a family member had this done. I think she was down for about a week resting and not lifting everything. With older kids that should be easier than with a newborn who needs you more.
Good luck.

HI,

I had a TVT when my son was 8 mos. old. He's now just turned 4. It took me a long time to heal to 100% BUT my results for going back to a 'normal' life was right away. Since my son was a baby I had my husband and my mom with me for 4 weeks to help lift him.

Have you stopped breastfeeding? The pg hormones are still in your system and can hinder the healing process. You've still got the elastin going to help with the muscles and stuff so you'd need to get that out of your system to really help things along.

I would do it again, however, if you want more kids be sure to talk to your Dr. about it. I was told I would need a C-section and could still tear the sling.

For me there was no more pain than cramps after delivery.

As for the advice about the chiropractor...I have no idea how that would help. It doesn't make sense to me since this is not an adjustment of any kind.

Good luck...I know it worked for me and I was at 90% for failure. In the first 6 weeks after I gave birth I averaqed 500 pads!
