Urologist or Recheck- 10 Yo Physical Told Could Not Feel Testicles. (?!)

There's retracted (which is ok) and descended (not so good).

Retracted can seem like they are not there at times.

A pediatric specialist will know the difference.

I am guessing (although you should ask) that they want him back in 3 months to see if they are simply retracted.

I'm sorry to hear that he is introverted. (I guess you meant that his personality and his testicles, all are introverted.) I think it is important to remind him that physical/medical conditions are able to change. Take him to a pediatric urologist soon, to work on this before puberty.

undescended testicles aren't that unusual, but i totally don't get it being an unknown until age 10.
my dad, father of five, has one undescended huevo. so does one of his sons. never caused any problem so neither has had anything done about it. i've read since that it can cause problems so is best addressed, but that's how the fellows in my family have handled it.
but in both cases it was known from babyhood on.
i can't imagine why the doctor wants a recheck in 3 months. if the testicles are simply retracted, say from swimming in cold water, they should be palpable again in no time. if they're actually undescended, what will a 3 month wait gain you?
i'd make an appointment with a pediatric urologist today, and a new pediatrician.

Find a pediatric urologist in your area and schedule an appointment. Then when you get the answers, instead of freaking out? Find the solution and what needs to happen next. Keep it matter of fact. You panic? Your son panics. DO NOT PANIC.

I have concerns about a doctor telling a child of this age anything like this directly! A teenager is one thing. A 10 year old is something else, especially because this apparently never came up on a prior physical! I'd question the whole thing.

You don't do a recheck in 3 months. You go see a pediatric urologist or you go to an excellent children's hospital where they can can bring in urology, endocrinology or any other specialty needed, as well as psychological counseling/support.

You tell your child that you're going to check with another doctor and he shouldn't worry unless and until there's a real reason to do so. You are his parent and you will shoulder this burden while he goes on with the business of being a kid.

I would probably go ahead and go to a urologist. I'm shocked that at 10 (and someone else at 7) are just now finding out that his testes are undescended, to me that seems old. Our pediatrician has been checking for them at every check up for the last 7 years and has stated that he could feel them, so this would concern me.

It's tough that he's already a worrier (my daughter and I both are!) but I do believe you have to be honest with him. It is his body and it's possible he might need surgery. I mean I might leave out the surgery part until you talk to another doctor, but you know what I'm saying! You know your child best and you know what and when you should tell him things, but I'm a big believer in telling kids the truth and giving them time to prepare for things.

I'm sorry. I don't have any experience in this realm, but I wanted to at least let you know someone read your post and cares. It's scary. I have a son (he's older) and I can imagine how worried you are, and about what is the right way to manage his care going forward.

Can you just call a urologist's office and give them the scenario and ask if they think there is any harm in waiting the 3 months and see what they say? It might east your mind a bit, just to talk to the specialist's office.

I don't have personal experience in this either. I worked for a urologist for several years and wouldn't hesitate to take my kid in for a consult. If you have a pediatric urologist in your area, even better. When a person has a more complicated issue, I think it's always best to seek a specialist. They're more current with available treatments and tests to their specific specialty.

Absolutely go to a different doc. One that specializes in this. A Urologist can do their job after examining him.

My son had his 7 year old physical with a new dr a few months ago. She could not feel his testicles. I thought, he was in the pool that morning, maybe they retracted? We took her advice and saw a pediatric urologist on the safe side. Turns out she was right and they had not decended properly. She suggested surgery within a few months. The earlier the better, he wasn't getting any younger and puberty isn't far off. We had the surgery done 2 months later. She assured me it was very routine and he recovered within 2 weeks. I still don't understand how we missed this. I mean, he's 7 and has had multiple doctors! Don't wait, see a specialist now!

What happened to them? I'm sure when you were changing his diapers and potty training him, you knew his testicles had descended. How long has it been since you saw him naked? Did you have any idea at all that something was amiss?

Get to a pediatric urologist/children's hospital as soon as possible. Something is very wrong and I would move heaven and earth to get him in to be seen. Do not act scared in front of your son. Just tell him the day before that you are going to get him checked. Don't tell him way in advance so that he worries about it...

We cannot tell you if they will descend again - this needs to come from the specialist...
