Using Blankets for One-Year-Old

A follow-up to the recent question about using blankets...What about for a one-year-old? Can I put a blanket on him at night? He's walking, so I don't think a sleep sack will work any more. When is it safe to start using a blanket? What kind? When did you start covering your little ones with a blanket.

Thanks!

I've been using blankets with my daughter since she was 10months old. At 13 months we introduced a very flat pillow and she loves it now. I was never worried because she is very strong and had a habit for a while of using things to cover up when she was sleepy. I think it depends on your child. Go with your instinct.

Hi!
My daughter just turned 1 last week and at her 1 year visit my doctor said it was fine to start using a small blanket--she said not a big comforter, but a blanket was fine. She also suggested putting stuffed animals/comfort objects in the crib as well!

I gave my daughter a blanket just after she turned two. I knew that we would start potty training at some point during her twos and I would no longer be able to put her in blanket sleepers (they seem too difficult for her to get out of on her own!) She's still getting the hang of the blanket -- we coach her about pulling it up when she's cold and keeping her feet covered. She's doing great, and I can't imagine her being able to keep it on when she was only one.

My 17 month old is still in blanket sleepers -- no blanket yet. But I can't imagine that there would be anything wrong with it, if you choose!

Jen,

My son is 2 1/2 and still loves his sleepsack..he wears an XL and he is easily able to walk around in his crib if needed...it's great as I never worry about the blanket not being on him or twisted..from what I've seen with blankets and little ones they don't stay on them as they move around...check out www.kidsurplus.com for great deals and lots of sizes..I love the fleece ones for winter.

There are always the blanket sleepers and fleece jammies. My kids didn't sleep well with blankets--kick them off--so we have used the heavier jammies. Easier to get out of bed in the morning too! Your warmth comes with!!

we were definitely using a blanket at age 1. I think we were using one of the nicer plush blankets from pottery barn kids that we'd gotten as a gift at that point. then around 19 months or so we bought a pillow, nice pillow sham and a regular sized blanket (our son was in a big boy bed at 16 months... walked at 9.5 months...)
hope this helps

We started with a blanket when Connor was 9 months old. Just make sure it is not too large of a blanket so they can't get tangled up in it. We used a regular thick smaller blanket at first and now he has a larger crocheted blanket. I would use a pillow even like the previous poster, but I can't find one flat enough!
