How about St. Louis - great zoo, lots to do in Forest Park. There's a children's musuem, City Museum, the Arch, a science museum.
Hi Moms,
I am looking for suggestions for a 3 to 4 day weekend getaway. I live near Indianapolis, IN and looking for places to take my 5 year old daughter. I would like to go to the surronding states, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri etc but I need fun places to take my daughter. What fun places have you visited in the states I've mentioned?
Thank you all for the good vacation advice. I would like to stay close to home where it's not to expensive so I do thank all of you for the great ideas.

Around that age, my daughter enjoyed: Mackinac Island, King's Island, and Chicago. We really love all that there is to do in Chicago--the parks and fountains, American Girl, Rainforest Cafe. And my daughter had her first cab ride; she thought that was awesome :)
Have fun!
Oh that's funny, I went to Indianapolis on vacation. Let's see I live by cedar point (always fun) we also have a couple indoor water park resorts in town and a couple of zoo's not to far away. As well as being right on lake erie, so beaches and boating.
Great Bear Lodge in Cincy (pricey but so much fun)
rent a cabin in Brown County
Pigeon Force or Gatlinburg, TN - fun for all - stay in a chalet on Ski Mountain Road (Gatlinburg); many things for kids in either town (Dollywood, Guinness, can't think of the name, but there is an amusement place where everything is upside down), plus Smoky Mt. National Park is right there too.
One of the greatest vacations we ever took with our kids when they pre-teen was touring Tennessee - Ruby Falls, Rock City, Graceland, Lookout Mt. (I understand they have added a zip line to that attraction), downtown Memphis also has a lot to see (underground railroad, great zoo, Duck Walk, etc.)
Columbus, OH has some fantastic places to go to....the Columbus Zoo, COSI, Zoombezi Bay Waterpark. We are planning on going back this summer. It does help that I have family living there :)
St. Louis has a free zoo & lots of places you can walk to & enjoy It's a neat, short, getaway place.
We love to vacation along Lake Michigan in Michigan - our last vacation we rented a house in South Haven and it was perfect! Also, I live in northwest Ohio - Cedar Point is a huge attraction here, as well as the Lake Erie Islands - Put-in-Bay and Kelly's Island.
Ditto on St. Louis. In addition to what CH mentioned, there's The Zoo, Grant's Farm (both free, but you have to pay for parking) the Magic House.
Chicago is good, too. Definitely more expense, but tons of museums and fun things to see.
I'm originally from Springfield, which has Lincoln sites galore and New Salem, where Lincoln lived before moving to Springfield. There's a few fun things to do in Springfield :-)
