Vacuum Brand

Well my vacuum cleaner has finally bit the big one. It still runs but the brushes underneath don't spin. If someone knows a magic way to get it working then great, but I am guessing that I may just need to get a new one. My question is: What vacuum cleaner do you recommend? It doesn't have to have a lot of bells and whistles just clean really well and I would like one that is lightweight. We have two flights of stairs-one up and one to basement. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much to everyone that responded. I am going to check the belt and probably replace it, but secretly I would just like a new one so when my budget can justify it I will get a lightweight one. It was good to hear the pros and cons of some of the brands out there. Thanks again.

You might be able to get it repaired, unless you are just wanting a new one. In that case, as the ads claim, a Dyson REALLY does work! I have two cats and nothing has ever cleaned the way it does. I used to have a Kirby and I absolutely HATED it - waaayyy overpriced too. A friend of mine just got an Oreck and likes it too.

My teenager bought me a vacuum cleaner for xmas! How funny is that! Anyway she went to walmart a bought a dirt devil and it was only around 60 bucks. I like it fine xcept I really liked the bag less one I had before. It is the Eureka whirlwind big cup from walmart. It was a pain in the butt emptying it as much as it needed and was quite messy to dump out(dust etc)had to go outside to clean filter every time. Now I kinda like the bag again. Either one was ok. I live in Republic and just bought a new one at (where else) Wal-mart. It is a Eureka and it is yellow (I am at work and do not remember the exact name of it). It works great! No bags to change, and great suction. I have several indoor cats and 3 kids so I vacuum at least twice per day and am always amazed how much it picks up. It was not expenseive either (would love a dyson but can't justify $500). Hope this helps.

I agree its probably just the belt. You can easily replace that yourself or go to a vacuum service store. It'd be way cheaper than buying a new one!

If you do end up buying a new one, do NOT buy a Eureka Altima! I can't tell you how horrible that one is (read the reviews on Target.com, wish I read them before I bought it.) I love my Bissell Momentum Cyclonic. Its light and works great! http://www.target.com/Bissell-Momentum-Cyclonic-Upright-V...

I have an Oreck Ultra. It was the second one up from the basic model. I have had it about three years now. I like it quite a bit. My neighbor has a dyson and sometimes I wonder if I should have bought one of those as I have two dogs - one very large and very hairy. Plus two kids...not so hairy, lol. It cleans well and it is very light! I haven't had any issues and it included tune ups and extras like a hand held cannister vac and a steam iron. I think it depends really on your cleaning needs...such as if you have allergies and pets and your budget. Price doesn't always equal the best.
I wanted a bag-less but my doctor steered me away from one as I have allergies and my kids have asthma. I would say buy one from a place that would let you bring it back if you didn't like it. I also think Oreck lets you try it free for x amount of days. And also, some of the vac stores let you bring in an old model and will give you credit towards a new one. There are MarBeck (ma and pa appliance type) stores around here and you could even go there to get some advice on all the different brands before you buy. Best of Luck! :)

Hi A.!
You have probably checked this but it sounds to me like you might just have a broken or jammed belt? That would be an easy and cheap problem to remedy.

However, I am also interested in seeing what others recommend.
What I like about my current vacuum is that it is an upright, it has onboard tools and a hose that I can pull off and use with the tools, and that it doesn't use bags, just has a canister that I empty.
HOWEVER, I have to empty it almost every time I vacuum and it is a dusty (outside) job to clean the gunk off of the filter each time. So if I could find a better option, that would be great. I have had so many cleaners in all price ranges but still have not found the perfect solution for me.

Good luck with your search!
L.

I love my Oreck. It is light weight, gets along the baseboards in my house, works in the kitchen on tile and linoleum, hardwood floors, etc. It is so lightweight my kids can carry it up the stairs. Also, Oreck will service the vacuum cleaner once a year for free including replace the belt. I have had my Oreck for 6 years and still love it. Good luck in your search :)

Dyson!! I love it.. I take it up and down the stairs with no problems.

We had a dirt devil and it didn't last a year before it died.

We just moved to a new home less than 2 years ago and purchased a brand of vacuum named Riccar. Although it is not the lightest thing on the market, it's not the heaviest either. It has a handle on the back to pick it up. It came with a 14ft. hose with a curved nozzle so you don't have to hold it in an annoying position to do the stairs. It also came with all the attachments in a nice case that keeps them all in one place. It requires bags, but after talking with the salesman I was not sold on the bagless ones anymore. I have a sister-in-law who really likes hers, and recommended it for our church for their cleaning purposes (they eventually purchased one too). Riccar has several models to choose from. Some have the extra tools on board and some don't.

I hope this has been some help to you.

Have a blessed day
A.

If you can repair it and you like your vacuum cleaner that would be your best bet. If not, however, my mom has always used an Oreck so I figured what the heck I'll try it. They're great, you can go to www.oreck.com and look at the different models they have. They aren't cheap but they work great. Also a thing to keep in mind is the bagless vacuums seem convienent, because that's what we had, but all you are doing when you dump it is putting that dust back into the air.

Bought a Kirby, hate it. (Heavy as hell to move around)
Bought a Dyson, have problems with it.
Bought a cheap $40 Eureka hepa filter (extremely lightweight) vacuum and love it...the 4 yr old can even adjust the handle to his size and carry it up the stairs and loves vacuuming.

The Dyson (when it worked, worked really well, but we keep having a hose come disconnected...so yeah, it CAN lose suction)

I clean the filter every other time I use it but it sucks better than the Kirby and as well as the Dyson before it quit working. And even if I forget to clean it, it still has great suction. If you can get one w/o a filter I'd say you're doing even better..but if not, definitely stay with the hepa ones...

DYSON worth every penny. This is coming from a house with two kids, two cats, and a huge lab that sheds a lot.

Works great on both my carpet and wood floors.
