Vacuum Cleaners - Smithfield,VA

Does anyone have vacuum cleaner recommendations? Looks like mine is dying. We have 2 constantly shedding dogs and a 2-year old, so we need a good one. We also have carpeted stairs, so an attachment to make stairs easier would be good. I think Costco has a Dyson and an Oreck - anyone know if they're any good? Thanks!!

What can I do next?

i had put off buying a dyson for years simply because of the cost. but when i considered the fact that dysons have a 5 years warrenty i had bought 3 vacuums over the past 6 years (totaling more than the cost of a dyson) i went for it. i have not for one single second regretted it! i have the dyson animal. it's perfect. goes from carpet to hardfloors with thte push if a button without sliging any dirt the way others do. lots of nifty attachments. and it's so easy to empty the canister. there is a special attachment for stairs and a LONG handle as well. i can't say enough good things about it! seriously! i almost named my first son DYSON!

I have an Oreck and its good, spent almost $500 on it, so I think it could have been better...but believe it or not my favorite "go to" vacuum is my shop vac we got at Home Depot...it is awesome! Sucks everything up and does the edges wonderfully. They sell them for like $80 and they come with all kinds of cool attachments and is small enough to fit in my coat closet! We also have a shedding dog and carpeted stairs, so I hear you...this might be worth looking into...

We love our Miele. It's more popular in Europe than in the U.S. But, we bought it because one friend had rabbits, and told us that if it could get out rabbit hair, cat and dog hair would be no problem. He was correct.
Check it out.

I just bought a Dyson too, I LOVE IT! It is the purplish one specifically for houses with pets! It really has incredible suction, and it is so easy to maneuver which is a plus for me having arthritis in my thumb joints. I read up on a few vacuums before I bought and the Dyson really seemed to have the best technology. Now that I have it, I know I made the right decision.

An investment but very Well worth it, as it will last well over 15 years.....The RAINBOW. I ran into someone whose Rainbow is 40 years old and still works fabulous. Love mine, it's wonderful. Uses water to capture the dirt, pet hair, etc, thus not blowing it back into the air like most vaccuums. (I have a shedding pet also). If interested, I can forward you the contact person to set up a demonstration for you.

LOVE my Oreck!! (have 1 dog, 2 cats & 3 kids!) We have had it for over 8 years and it still works great! In 8 years, I have only had to take it in for one minor repair (broken cord - our fault). I have a bad back and can not push the heavy vacuums, even the self propelled ones, so the 8 lb Oreck is great for me. I got it when the canister vac was free with the upright purchase and I use the canister on the steps, furniture, car & all the small spaces (never has a repair on the canister). Bit of a pain that you can only get the replacement bags @ an Oreck store, but worth the inconvenience. My 8-year old even vacuums with it now!

Rainbow is unbeatable not just for getting things really clean, but I ahve found things stay cleaner as well. They are really pricey, but you can find them on e-bay, and you can always talk to the seller, and check their reputation, etc.
I also have an Oreck which is terrific, and very light weight, a great product. I would still lean to the Rainbow, given you little one's (especially) proximity to the floors and all their nastiness. I think you'd be very happy with the results and with how much better the air is in your house after using it for a while.

There is a Dyson that is specifically for use with pets. Our friends just got it and it works great. They had already vacuumed their house with their old vacuum and wanted to try it out any way. They were absolutely amazed at how much hair they pulled out of their carpets. I would say go witht that one, it's expensive (around $500) but it's worth it.

I have a Dyson, and it's nice. It works well on all surfaces (tile, carpet, etc.) and picks up well. The attachments stink though. I can't imagine having to use them on the stairs. And it's true about the human hair binding up and burning out the motor, esp if you have someone with long hair in your house. It's not worth the price. Go for the Bissell or another comparable brand from Sears. Check out Consumer Report comparison. Wish I hadn't fallen for the Dyson, but spent too much to get a new one any time soon.
