I'm curious about the "big 3" vacuum cleaners out in the marketplace: Dyson, Kirby, and Oreck. Does anyone have any pros and cons with them? Are they worth the money?

Had borrowed my mom's Kirby for almost a year but really did not like it. It was big, heavy and required taking it apart to use attachments. Bought a Dyson on sale at Kohls with an additional 30% discount card and absolutely love it. It is amazing at the dirt and junk I clean out of it every time I use it

I have used the Oreck for over 10 years! I love my Oreck and only recently purchased a new one because I wanted the new hepa filtration, however my old one was still going strong. I traded it in for a new model and they take a few hundred bucks off. Well worth the money though. Good luck!

We have a Dyson, and LOVE it. I don't have experience with the other two, but I wouldn't trade my dyson for anything. The day I came home with our dyson, my husband had just finished vacuuming with our old one. As soon as we took it out of the box, we re-vacuumed just to try it out and it was disgusting how much more dirt the dyson pulled out of our freshly vacuumed carpet!

Dyson all the way. Orek's are not worth the money and can't get anywhere close to a baseboad. (Had one for 7 years). Now I've had my Dyson for 2 years and am very happy.

J.,
I recently did some online research myself for a new vacuum. Check out consumer reports, amazon.com, or just google vacuum comparisons. What I came up with was one of the Hoovers. Most research and marketing sites said that the Dysons and Orecks were no better in actual research tests (even though they cost a whole lot more).
My sister in law was here at the time we were looking. She said that every vacuum she's ever had goes after a few years anyway (she has four kids, a cat, and a dog - and they live out in the country), so buy the cheaper one. We ended up with something less than what we wanted, but it's working great so far (a Eureka).
However, we have mostly wood floors, so we weren't looking for something major for just a few rooms and area rugs.
Just my two cents.

I am in the market for new vacuums (1 up and 1 down stairs) I've had 2 Self propelled Hoovers for over 10 years that work great and I would purchase the same model again. NOTE: I had a Kenmore that I hated and I returned it for a Hoover.

I checked out Dyson and my mom told me to NEVER get one. They are a great machine BUT she said it is heavy and hard to get around.

I am planning to check out the Oreck. I like lighter weight, self propelled, and I prefer a bag.

I look forward to responses here!
Susan

We bought a Dyson with our Amex points. I know that they are expensive and a little heavy BUT I love it. I hate the bags of other cleaners. I think we keep the house clean. Never leave food out and the kids only eat in the kitchen, leave shoes by the back door. I am amazed how much dirty we pick-up every time. We vacuum every week and it is dirty every time. We have the medium strength one (it's yellow) Our friends have the purple one for animals. That one is fantastic. You would never guess she has 2 dogs. I will own this forever.

We have an oreck and it has been great for years. It is very light and easy to get up the stairs with. We recently moved however, and our new house has very thick carpet and the Oreck just wasn't picking up as good anymore. Target has their Pink Dyson's on clearance for about $120 chaper than I have seen anywhere. I bought one yesterday and tried it out last night. I just vacumed at our house last weekend and the Dyson picked up so much last night I had to empty it 4 times. and the stair tool was great also. I would highly recommend it.

I have been researching the same models. My mom recently subscribed to Consumer Reports, and there's so much useful info there. As it turns out, the Dyson has the worst reviews. Oreck has pretty good reviews, but the Kirby was given the highest rating for the least number of repairs. I could go into more detail, but you may just be better off spending the $30 to get a year subscription to Consumer Reports and do your own research based on what you need/want (upright/canister, etc.) I found it very helpful.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Love my purple animal Dyson. It really cleans well, goes all the way to the edges of the walls. Cleaning up the container is a push of a button and I really like not to have to buy any more bags!!! I have the DC17 and it is not so heavy at all. It is definately much lighter than my old Hoover (that broke again...). Done with Hoover and hope this "baby" will last for a loooong time

i am a proud owner of an Oreck! I bought it in 2003 and loved it from the moment I brought it home!!! I tell everyone to buy an Oreck. The suction is great & and Love the lightness of it. One of the reason I decided on the Oreck. I didn't want to have to buy 2 vaccummes because a traditional is too heavy to carry up and down the stairs. I don't think twice about carrying it upstairs or even vacumming the stairs with it.

the canister is great. Has a handy strap on it and easy to carry around with you. The suction is wonderful as well.

Another thing that I love about it is that I have Oreck stores to go to if there is a problem. Mine has a 10 year warrently, bumper to bumper and came with 10 years of free service as far as a yearly cleaning and belt changes. Every january, I walk it into an Oreck store for its' cleaning. They in return loan me a loaner Oreck so I don't go without a vacuum. 2 days later they call and it's ready for pick up.

I have been very pleased with the service I've received at the various stores I have used in the past.

I tested a lot of vacuumes in the stores and when I went to an oreck and tried it out. I knew right then and there that was the one for me.

Stop by a store and see for yourself!

Hi, I have a Sanitaire Commercial style upright. I bought it when we had shedding dog issues. This machine is terrific. I cannot believe all the dust and dirt it picks up. It is only my DH & I and 2 kitties. We joke that the machine manufactures the stuff so it looks like it picked it all up. It is a heavier machine with carpet height adjustment and can get fairly close to the floor moulding. It does not use bags, just the large cup to empty. I have this one about 15 years and just get it cleaned up every year or so. I now have a 1 story with some wood floors and bought a new little cannister to do all the other jobs. The brand is RICCAR. It is the quietest vacuum I have seen and the cannister is small. HTH, Nana

I was buying the $99 vacuums ever 6 mo-1 year because they were dying or not suctioning any more. I now have the animal dyson and love, love, love it! It comes with a warranty-not sure how long, but I say spend the extra $$ now and save in the long run. The tools on the dyson are amazing, I can clean areas that I could never clean before these handy tools.
