I am wondering what you all think about using valtrex in my last 2 weeks of pregnancy to suppress the chance of having an HSV outbreak. I have one currently and am nervous about having one when I go into labor b/c if the sore is in my birthing area I will have to have a cesarean birth.

What can I do next?

I think it is a good idea to get on a recommended dosage of valtrex asap. Everything I have read and heard shows that there are more benefits to using valtrex (or generic form) in the last trimester than not. For more info, try giving these folks a call (their phone number should be on the website): www.ashastd.org

I am 29 weeks pregnant and have had genital herpes for about 6 years. I am hopeful that I, too, can avoid a C-section.

Best to you.

I've used it with 3 pregnancies now and have not had one problem. In my opinion, it's not worth the risk to NOT take it. Good luck!

You should absolutely take the Valtrex! Usually it's prescribed for the last month of your pregnancy. Good luck!

I have also used it in all 3 of my pregnancies and have had no problems! The risk to not take it outweighed any anxiety I had in taking it. I have 3 beautiful, healthy children now too.

Um, ask your OB?!
Shouldn't they be telling you the best way to avoid your baby getting it...
You trust your OB to deliver the baby, I would assume you would be ok with asking this question.

I think it will be fine to use it. I used it with my first born for the last 2 weeks of pregnancy, I didn't have an outbreak but it was just a precaution. The baby was fine. I chose not to use it with my third child as I rarely have outbreaks (once every 2 years or so). I think it is a choice you should talk about with your doctor.
