I was wondering if anyone has used a doctor out of CDH for a vasectomy? (Is it a urologist that does it?) How was your husband's experience with the procedure? Is it typically covered by insurance? Thanks!

Hi J.,
My hubby had one done over a year ago at Northwest Community Hospital by a urologist. It was only a 30 minute procedure and he was able to walk out of the hospital right after (although he was in baggier sweta pants). He needed an ice pack for a day or two but had no black and blue marks or other complications. He took it easy around the house for 4 or 5 days - no heavy lifting or anything like that. But he had the procedure done on a Friday and went back to work the following MOnday with no issues and just a few Tylenol. They say it's reversible too, if that's something you really decided on someday. So from our point of view, it was a good decision. But I do HIGHLY recommned you having a Urologist do it - I think they just know their way around that area best. Best wishes!

Reading about the black and blue, ice and pain experiences make me cringe when there is another method out there. It is scalpeless and just as effective. Our insurance covered 100% so worth looking into.

My husband had it done this past May, but out of Alexian Brothers in Elk Grove. He had a no surgery vasectomy, they just insert a needle and cut it. It took about 30 min., and needed to be driven home. He was in pain for a few days, very black and blue. Although we did not do the 3 retests, we were good. We just made sure we were 'safe' for the next 3 months. Insurance covered all but $90 of it.

My husband had a vasectomy last year (day before Thanksgiving), done by a Urologist. The procedure was quick 30 min. tops start to finish...2 small incisions with disovable stitches. As for his experience....GREAT, no problems at all....he wore loose pants as instructed, but walked fine, sat fine, no pain meds., etc. He just could have our daughter jump up on him for a couple days like she normally would do (but of course that's understandable). I have heard some men have complicated experinces that don't go to work for a few days, are black/blue, in pain, etc. But honestly, I think it ALL depends on the man's pain threshold and if they "choose" to be pampered about it! :) lol You do have to get samples for testing....ours was for 2 samples....one 6 months after the procedure & one 1 year after the procedure. As for your insurance question, ours was covered 100%, but we are a military family....so not sure how the civilian insurance stuff works.

My husband had this done in Feb with a urologist in the physician offices attached to Advocate Christ hospital. He was not actually a patient of or admitted to the hospital. It took all of 30 - 45 mins. He sat on ziploc bags of snow all weekend (softer than ice), moved very slowly in swishy pants for a few days. He had 2 little dissolving stitches, one on each side. We got our 3 clean samples over 12 weeks and all is well. Just be sure to be careful until you get the 3 clean samples.
Good Luck!
Jenny
