M.,
Not to alarm you, but you could have a clot. It probably is not though. Vericose veins are quite common in pregnancy. I had them really bad - expecially by my 3rd child in 4 years. I finally got a pool close to my ankle that looked like a golf ball under my skin. They did send me to a vascular surgeon. WHat they did there was basically an ultrasound of the large (important) veins in my legs to determine that I wasn't in danger. Everything was fine, thank God and the proceedure is nothing. For me, the baby was cutting off some circulation and my legs just didn't pump well enough. You do need to get it checked out because a clot in a major vein could break free - this can be fatal. But, as I said it is probably nothing - very common. But, always best to be safe.
On the bright side, most of mine went away after pregnancy. I have a few, but they don't bother me as my swimsuit modeling days are over anyway (HA!)
They can be painful, especially if you stand a lot. I was told to wear support hose (the pharmaceutical kind - that cost a lot and my insurance didn't cover - and they were OH, so attractive!) However, this did stop my legs from swelling so bad - which they did in my later months. But, I am old anyway - almost 40 when my last was born.
Take it easy, try to keep your feet up and try support hose.
