Very Casual Baptism Attire?

ok, we recently set up the plans for our childrens baptism. I am NOT a religious person. My husband says that he is catholic and comes from a catholic family, but he does not go to church or anything like that. We are baptizing our kids in a very casual ceremony, mainly just celebrating their life and trying to respect the tradtions of our family.

I bought my daughter a very simple white cotton eyelet dress. it has puffed sleeves and is knee length. For my son, i am just wanting to put him in a white polo shirt, but i can decide if i want to put him in khaki, light grey, or black slacks, or khaki, light grey, or black pants? They are getting baptized on July 31, so it is going to be hot out.

what do you think would look best? i guess i need to add that this is NOT a formal ceremony, it is NOT in a catholic church. We are having a female reverend and her exact words are,

"I’ll be back in touch as the date gets closer to confirm any final details. The ceremony is very informal, so there’s really nothing you need to prepare."

What can I do next?

Don't worry about it. I can tell you that my husband went through the whold prosses to become a catholic and none of the adults where wearing all white. If you aren't under about 25lbs you aren't going to find a white outfit for a boy. We just had our daughter baptised in a catholic church and we used the flower girl dress from my cousins wedding so I didn't even buy anything for her to wear. The pastor kept telling me to relax and enjoy it but I'm so uptight that I just had to chase her around the whole time because I thought she was being dissrespectful. Good luck and just relax. Black, gray, or purple pants isn't goimg to make or break the day.

My son got baptized in a Catholic church in February and he's 3. When I was going online trying to find an outfit for him they were all like $100 or more. I wasn't about to spend that much on something he'd be in for 15 minutes. I just bought him a white polo shirt and he wore khaki pants and he already had little black penny loafers. It was not a big deal. But our priest is very laid back. I wouldn't worry about it too much...like you said it's very informal. He looked very cute and the baptism went well :)

Hi L.,

I'm sure your kids will look great with your son wearing any color of pants that you mentioned. KansasMom mentioned shorts which would be great if it's hot too.

Please don't take this as if I'm being judgmental because I'm not intending it that way... but baptism can be a very meaningful experience for you and your children. It seems that you are rushing into this just to fulfill some tradition without experiencing the meaning.

I would encourage you to read the Bible, especially the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Acts - they really aren't that long - and see what the basis is for baptism. I'm sure it will be much more meaningful to your and your family when you see what it represents.

God Bless,
A.

Hi L.! I think the dress for your daughter sounds perfect! I like the idea of the khaki shorts too, and actually any of the options you mentioned would be perfect too.

It's the fact that you are getting your kids baptized that is important. I agree with Aimee that it is a very meaningful event. If your husband is Catholic, whether you are practicing Catholics or not, I think you should take the Baptismal preparation class and have your children baptized into the Catholic church. It is not just a tradition. It is not casual (by that I mean not something taken lightly). It IS a spiritual, beautiful, meaningful event. And you would get so much more out of it if you took the class and understood what you are doing.

Otherwise, I would ask why you are doing it at all?? Baptism initiates them into the Church and absolves them of their original sin. I don't know about other faiths, but in a Catholic baptism, by asking to have your children baptized, the parents are "accepting the responsibility of training them in the practice of the faith", in other words modeling the faith for your children.

I know you were only asking about the outfits, so I'm sorry for the unsolicited advice, but just wanted to share that it is so much more!!

I know you said it isn't formal, but seriously, black and gray scream funeral to me and even though he'd have a white shirt, I wouldn't do it! I would stick with khaki shorts or pants, or white, but that is probably hard to find for boys. You could also look into linen pants or shorts which are cute and airy for the hot weather.

Again, even though it's not formal, that doesn't mean it isn't meaningful and the kids should be dressed accordingly. I think your outfit choices are great, that's not what I mean, but I just think that there should be a bit of emphasis placed on looking nice and representing the family.

I say this is YOUR ceremony, do what appeals to you the most!!! My first thought was a nice pair of khaki shorts...coupled with nice casual shoes....if it is going to be so hot. Or just go with long pants of whatever color you choose.
Don't sweat the details...no one else will!!!
