Very Sore Breasts!

I have a a question to ask. I had a miscarriage in October, thankfully I was only 9 weeks along! Ever since that we have been trying to get pregnant again. About 4 days ago, I woke up and my breasts were very sore! My last Menstral Cycle was on Feb 6, so I have to wait a few more weeks to find out with a home pregnancy test.I have also been on Amoxicilin for a sinus infection, so I don't know if that may factor into this or not? I am so nervous for many reasons. I get scared to see a negative of course, but I also worry about seeing a positive result. I don't want to go through the same thing my husband and I went through before! I am just wondering if anyone has been through this before, and if anyone knows of a really accurate pregnancy test that can detect 5 days earlier than you Menstrual Cycle is supposed to start?

What can I do next?

Hi T.,
I can't say I have any advice for you that hasn't already been said. But I wanted to respond and say hi anyway because I know what you are going through. My name is also T., I have a 3 year old daughter and recently had an early miscarriage. No one seemed to think it was a very big deal when it happened because it was so early and I already have one healthy daughter. But none of those things made it any less upsetting to me. My husband and I are trying again and while I hope I get pregnant soon, I am so afraid I will have another miscarriage. I guess we both just have to believe that everything happens for a reason and we will get pregnant again when the time is right. I do think that sore breasts is a good sign of early pregnancy. Good luck!

You can go to your doctor and get a blood test done. They had done some bloodwork on me at the same time they did a urine test and the urine test was negative but the blood test was positive.

Put damp towels in the microwave to heat up and put them on your breasts. That seems to help some. Also put on a tighter more supportive bra, like a sports bra. Sore breasts was one week after I became pregnant and I went up a whole cup size. I kep going up and went to a size K, so sore breasts is tough! Try to stay away from underwire if you can while pregnant to avoid mastitis--that was horrible pain where I couldn't even move my arm! If you have larger breasts, you can get measured and get the correct size for maternity/nursing bras that are super supportive with no underwire on a website http://breakoutbras.stores.yahoo.net/leadinglady.html. They are awesome and very helpful.

But I really want to say that one of the Number one reasons for miscarriage is lack of progesterone! If you are pregnant, you could ask for a progesterone blood test and if it is low get on supplements. They have a vaginal suppository and a horrible shot kind. I had to do both. So when you do get pregnant, make sure they check you progesterone levels often the whole first trimester! Progesterone is the horomone that keeps you pregnant the first trimester. I checked mine about once a week, sometimes twice until it was on better levels. I can say that I had to do both since my levels were extremely low, and as painful as it was, I am glad I did it because I have two beautiful kids with two pregnancies that we did extra progesterone. Good luck!

Most pregnancy tests can now predict as early as 5 days before your period. First response is a good one, I think, to try. However, with my 1st baby the pregnancy test that I took, showed a negative, and I really was pregnant. So, it's hard to know. Talk to your doctor if you want to know, they can always do a blood test to check your hormone levels.

I know this sounds absurd, but take a test now.

If you had a normal period on Feb 6th, assuming you have normal 28 day cycles, 4 days ago you would have just barely been ovulating(2/20/08), and not actually pregnant yet.

I had a normal period and 2 weeks later had major pregnancy symptoms, I tested, and got a VERY positive pregnancy test. Without scaring you too much, I had an ectopic pregnancy (baby in my tube) I had to have surgery to have it removed and when they did that they found out the baby was 8 1/2 weeks along and still growing. So I was lucky to have tested when I did - another 2 weeks could have killed me.

I say, whenver you have pregnancy symptoms that last more than a few days, you should test!!

Hope you get good new soon -

First, I'm so sorry for your previous loss. We've been through that, too, and it's very understandable for you to be more anxious and hesitant going into another pregnancy. While there's certainly no guarantee, be encouraged to know that many women who have experienced a previous miscarriage go on to have a normal, healthy pregnancy and baby in the future.

As for the pregnancy test, I would recommend ClearBlue Digital's test. I know they're more expensive, but they are very sensitive and they will give you a clear "Pregnant" or "Not Pregnant" result, which is very important when you're testing early and trying to decide if you're really seeing a faint line or if your eyes are playing tricks on you! If you opt for the traditional test, I would recommend Wal-mart's equate brand. They're cheap but very sensitive and have a good track record.

Lastly, I would recommend if you find yourself going into yet another cycle that you consider charting your cycles. It can tell you a lot about what's going on with your body, which can be particularly helpful when trying to conceive, looking for early indications of pregnancy, and deciding on the best day to take a home pregnancy test. Read Toni Weschler's Taking Charge of Your Fertility if this interests you at all.

Best wishes to you!

Hey T....

I know exactly what you are going through! I have a 3.5yr old and I just gave birth to another beautiful baby boy...he is 15wks...but it wasnt easy, I think Austin (baby) was my 6th or 7th pregnancy (i seriously lost count!) Sad thing is, I am only 22! Well one morning I too woke up and my breasts were so soar that I couldnt wear a bra but it hurt to not wear one too! The test that has always been great for me is 1st responce! It really does tell you before your period comes. I am not sure if the Amox. is gonna affect anything because the test is testing for HCG levels. But just in case a test comes up NEG I would wait till a week or so after the antibiotics are done and try again. I sincerly wish you the best! If you ever need just someone to talk to feel free to email me!

Hi T.,

I'm sorry to hear about your miscarriage. I had one between my two children (11 weeks along). It was extremely difficult to go through, and I was very excited to get pregnant only 2 months after the miscarriage.

I am concerned about your use of antibiotics, which will have a negative impact on your unborn child. Believe it or not, drugs we take and chemicals we inhale or ingest (unknowingly) are often passed on to our children through our blood and DNA.

A study done in 2005 by the Environmental Working Group on the umbilical cords of newborns revealed an astonishing 200 chemicals that can cause cancer, brain damage, firth defects, and other health ailments.

I recommend seeing a Holistic Doctor (perhaps a Naturopath) about how you can improve your immune system naturally so that you no longer get sinus infections.

BTW, I used to get sinus infections all the time. I'm happy to share with you how I got rid of them if you want to call me at my office ###-###-####)

Best of luck to you!

Warm Regards,

T., I am sorry to hear about your loss. Its never easy to deal with no matter how far into your pregnancy you are. I can tell you though from personal experience that I had extremely sore breast two to two and a half weeks before I even missed my period with my current pregnancy. Some people are saying its too soon to feel any side affects from being pregnant but thats not always true. With my first daughter I was sick instantly. and was throwing up nonstop two weeks before my missed period. Everybody is different and every pregnancy is different. It doesnt hurt to wait to take a pregnancy test until your missed period....but one thing....generic are just as good as the name brand. I took a name brand one and a generic and found the generic better.

good luck to you and your husband.

Go ahead and take the test. All the tests are pretty much the same and are designed to detect the first pregnancy hormones produced by the fertilized egg after it implants itself. All four of my children I tested up to a week and a half before a missed period and got accurate results. Some were just fainter than others. DO NOT use any herbal products until after you confirm whether you are pregnant or not as some induce miscarraige.

Good Luck!

Hi T.,

I am very sorry to hear about your miscarriage and I'm sure it's very scary for you right now to think about trying again with the same possible outcome. I can't imagine. As far as the pregnancy tests go, I can tell you that I am a pharmacist and know that all of them have the same accuracy rate as long as you follow the directions correctly. And as far as 5 days earlier...they ALL say that, so I don't even see a difference from one brand to another as to WHEN you can get a response. I suppose they stopped selling the ones that don't detect that early because no one wants to wait that long! :-) Hope that helps. Oh, and one last note...breast soreness is not listed as a side effect of Amoxicillin, so at least that is not due to the medication.

Some antibiotics cause yeast infections, which can lead to sore breasts. They are also very hard on the liver, which again can create inflammation in different parts of the body. You might try eating or taking Probiotics and see if that relieves the soreness. I don't know of a really good pregnancy test. The stress you are putting yourself under isn't going to help either. If you believe in natural medicine, you might check with one of the herb stores - like Desert Sage Herbs or the herb section in Whole Foods - and see what they might suggest.

T.,
I experienced really sore breasts right before I found out I was pregnant, but I know that can also just mean that your period is coming to. I was very anxious to find out my pregnancy news too so I used First Response for my pregnancy test. I was expecting my period in about 4-5 days from that time too so I took it quite early. Good luck to you and your husband and I hope it all works out soon!

Hi T.,

I am so sorry for your loss. It must have been very painful - I can't imagine.

As for your question, sore breasts have always meant pregnancy for me and for most of my friends who've discussed it. I've gotten sore breasts as soon as 2 days after conception.

Home pregnancy tests can be unpredictable. When I was pregnant with my daughter, it took a month for it to show up on a test. I had sore breasts and I just knew I was, but even the test at the doctor's office came up negative. With my son, I showed up pregnant on a test really early. So hard to know how your hormone levels will be at the time you test!

And on another note, I know several people who have had one or multiple miscarriages in a row, and then had healthy pregnancies afterward and have given birth to healthy, full-term infants.

Best of luck to you,
J.

T.,

I know what you mean about not wanting to see the negative. I did not want to take a test because I did not want to be told I was not pregnant. My friends and husband had to make me promise to take one and I finally was pregnant. I hope the same is true for you.

I am also in my early 30s and I have a very real concern that I will have difficult pregnancies and/or have a miscarriage. In my first trimester I was sooo tired I literally slept 15 hours a day. Thankfully I had a job that I could do that and work when ever I needed to get the work done.

I think rest is vital to making it past the first trimester. Take more breaks and sleep often if you are pregnant.

As for the sore breasts I have to agree that they are likely a sign that you are pregnant.

I remember that I was watching for changes in appetite and morning sickness, but what I got was a piercing pain in my breasts. The first time it hit I was in a grocery store and I blurted out "Oh My God". My husband asked what was wrong and I said I did not know. It felt like someone was taking a razor blade to my nipples.

I highly recommend Lanisoh for the pain (now and while breast feeding). I want to buy stock in the company.

Best of luck to you and your husband.

HI T.,

I just wanted to express my understanding of your situation. I actually went through three miscarriages before I was able to stay pregnant and carry by daughter to term. I think all of the preg. tests are accurate. I even used the generic brands. The important thing to realize is that miscarriages happen more often than you would think. It is extremely disappointing and sad. I prayed alot and even though I had three in a row, it was worth it just to be able to have the dauhgter of my dreams.

Prays and best wishes!!

We have been going through infertility for a little over a year and I just lost a baby as well in Jan. I know completely what you are going through. I really hope you are pregnant, but do yourself a favor and don't test until you are good and late. I only say that because of the roller coaster you will put yourself through. Most test aren't sensitive enough 5 days before you miss, and if it is neg then you will either feel bad then, or talk yourself into the fact that it was just too early and start obsessing again.

Just for reference the first response brand is probably the best. I was told by the infertility Dr. that it will detect hormone levels as low as 30. (Blood test will detect as low as 5). Good Luck and I hope you will be feeling a lot more than sore breasts very soon!!
