Looking to purchase our daughter a puppy, probably a Bichon Frise or Maltese. This will be our first time as a pet owner. Can anyone recommend a good vet in Rockwall,Garland, Wylie, Sachse area. Would like to perhaps talk with a few before making our purchase. Also, are there any "Must" ask questions I need to ask?

What can I do next?

A really good vet is located in Garland at 3339 Broadway, ###-###-####. Her name is Jan Dewitt DVM, her clinic is Club Hill Animal Clinic. She loves and cares about animals. She puts them and the owner at ease. L. W.

Please heed the advice of the other replies. Do not go to a puppy breeder. I'm sure that there are some reputable ones out there. But there are also many more puppy mills. Make sure and do a lot of research on your choice. Also take note of Dr. Jan DeWitt. She is absolutely wonderful. You'll love her. She is a fantastic vet, with great animal sense. Good luck.

Sachse Vet Hospital(http://www.sachsevethospital.com/)-###-###-####. We have been taking our animals here for years and they are great. My father-in-law used to use them for his horses too, so our family has been using them for a good 15-20 yrs.

Dr. Jan DeWitt, 3339 Broadway, Garland, Ph. ###-###-#### Dr. DeWitt is wonderful. You probably already know this, but perhaps almost as important as the vet at first is finding a reputable breeder. Watch out for pet shops because they often buy from puppy mills even though they tell you they don't. Go to the breeder's place of business and look around. We just adopted a white poodle/bichon mix from the Humane Society and he has had really bad allergies for a while from the looks of his hair and he scratched and chewed incessantly. His saliva has turned all his underside and feet brown. He takes allergy meds, but it will take a while for his hair to be completely white again. Dr. DeWitt said white dogs have a tendency to have skin allergies more than other colors, plus have a tendency to have more ear infections caused by the allergies. You might ask whatever vet you talk with about allergies as well as certain other problems certain breeds have. You might consider a "designer dog", purposely bred mixes of certain breeds. They claim the offspring have "hybrid vigor", meaning they generally have the best traits of each breed. Ask the vet what his/her experience has been with designer mixes. I spent a lot of time on www.puppyfind.com before I adopted, looking at Bichons, Malteses, Havaneses, Lhasa Apsos, etc., as well as many of the designer breeds. I wanted a non-shedding, small, kid-socialized, relatively "quiet" dog. Then I started looking at the various rescue web sites. There I found Riley and will be getting a Lhasa Mix in about a week from another rescue group. These groups have the dogs in foster care for 5-6 weeks before they are adopted in order to get them in good health and identify any health/behavior problems and hopefully have them corrected. Good luck with your search. Research has shown that many of the "very successful" people had pets they were responsible for when they were young.

Dee,
Please don't buy your puppy from a breeder
you can find just what you want from a rescue online
or in shelters
if you say you want a maltese they will find you a little one!
Also when you adopt this way they generally start you with a low cost spay - neuter, shots, and 1 yr check up certificate.
Also Jan Dewitt has taken care of all my creatures for 21 years. She falls in love with each and every one!

There are a ton of animal rescue groups. Just please do not purchase a puppy from a pet store because they could come from puppy mills. If you are not sure what these are, look it up on line or on you tube and you will be amazed. Thanks
