Virus and Nerve Pain? Does This Happen to You?

Every time I get a virus, (ever since I had a terrible case of the flu when I was 17), the nerves in my legs hurt excrutiatingly bad. I have had stomach flu for the past couple days and I had to take hydrocodone that I had leftover from an abscess tooth just to be able to tolerate the pain.

Obviously I don't go to the doctor for viruses like stomach bugs, so I won't be consulting a doctor this time. In the past when I've brought it up they just tell me it's inflammation and to take ibuprofen. Umm, duh?

Anyway I was just wondering if this has happened to any of you, because all of my friends and family think that it's weird, it doesn't happen to them.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Funny you say that, Tracy, because now that you mention that, the first time the nerve pain happened (when I was 17), it was after I had had a minor bout of chicken-pox at age 16. (I've had chicken pox twice) Isn't shingles related to the chicken-pox virus? Hmm... I'll have to look into that!

Maybe it's because I have shingles, but that sounds like shingles! It's accompanied by fever, maybe chills, extreme nerve pain, deep aches and pains. Most people get a rash that turns into blisters, but not everyone gets the rash or the blisters, just pain. The pain follows a nerve cluster. The treatment is anti-viral medication.

That's how I felt with CMV - have you been tested for that? It's pretty common and stays with you forever and can be "reactivated"...

Definitely go see a doctor is you suffer any muscle weakness, tingling or loss of feeling in your extremities. I had a friend that is recovering from Guillaine Barre syndrome and it can be fatal if not caught in time (your nervous system could shut down along with your vitals). She had a virus or flu-like symptoms a week before the other symptoms kicked in. She spent a week in ICU. It's something they should be able to test for at the hospital, but don't take it lightly if your symptoms get worse. If you want a more natural approach take olive leaf extract (Barleans brand or concentrated gel caps) It is a natural anti-viral and good for anyone fighting shingles. I would also load up on Vitamin D3. But definitely keep your eye on it, as it could be something serious... Hoping you have a speedy recovery.

Yes. Viruses (and infections) in general seem to linger for me. I can usually tell I'm getting sick because I start to feel "tingly" and "weak" in my thigh muscles, and I can also tell I'm catching a cold and/or cold sore by a funny feeling I get in the skin below my mouth and around my jaw. (ALWAYS followed by a cold sore breakout!) And I've had shingles - that's a totally different pain (like your skin is on fire!).

I also end up with bursitis (in various locations) in my major joints. Sometimes the shoulder, sometimes the hip. Depends on what wonderful virus I get hit with. The doctor(s) haven't been too concerned with all this, and it's been going on for the last 15 years or so.
