Vision Problems in My 7 Year Old?

My 7 year old recently got her first pair of glasses. The school exam did not catch it but her pediatrician did. She claims she doesn't need them but her vision test revealed otherwise. My daughter needed glasses about that time and I couldn't believe how quickly her eyes kept changing for the next couple of years. It can be a time of lots of changes. She went through several different perscriptions and now wears contacts (she got them when she was 11). We see Dr. Eston at Howell Eye Center. She also did my husband's lasic surgery. She is not pediatric, but we've been happy with her knowledge. Hope this helps.

I would probably take her to an eye doctor-if it gets worse, it could impact her learning rather quickly. If you needed glasses, it is not surprising she may be following in your footsteps. You may also find out that she's fine and then you can move on with peace.

I'm going to second Dr. Kontry here. My 4 1/2 year old had her first eye exam with him in April. He was incredibly sweet and very patient with her. The exam he performed was *much* more extensive than what the school or her pediatrian would do. His staff was incredibly friendly and they are very welcoming to children of all ages even thought they aren't a pediactric office. I'll definitely be a return customer/patient.

Maybe a free vision screening at a local eye doctor would put your mind at ease. Have you discusssed the concern with your pediatrician? I don't know if I'd be worried about the best pediatric eye doctor right away, although my mom always recommended an opthamologist over an optometrist. Fair haired, blue-eyed children can have a greater tendency to have wandering eye, which can cause blurriness in vision. It is correctable with therapy and/or surgery. My experience has been that the vision screenings at school and /or the Pediatrician's office can be useless! At age 6, my son was dianosed with amblyopia (lazy eye) after passing several screenings. His eye sight was aweful, and we never knew! In your daughters case, she may just want glasses, since she probably has friends that have gotten them. However, I would most definitely have her checked. I am a firm believer now that ALL children should have a thorough eye exam (NOT a screening)before starting school. Most common vision problems are due to the shape of your eye, and I don't believe that getting glasses will make your eyesight worse. It all depends on the growth/shape of the eye itself.
We live in Brighton, and we go to Kensington Opthamology. The Dr. we see there is Dr. Holly Holm and she is great.

I'd at least back up what the school said or didn't say to you. Have her checked by an eye doctor. The school might miss something that a doctor wouldn't. Better to be sure.

If caught early and given the PROPER prescription the sight degeneration can be slowed and restored in some cases...
best to get it checked just in case...
