My 5 1/2 year old son doesn't eat very well. I've tried several vitamins, but he doesn't like them. Has anyone had any luck with this same situation and found a vitamin that they liked or some way to sneak one into their food?

What can I do next?

My 5 year old is the same way. It is very difficult to get him to eat anything. The vitamins that he will take are Nemo and they have what i believe to be a sugar coating and are gummy. I hope this helps.

I give my 2 year old the Flintstones vitamins. He loves them and asks for his vitamin everyday. I won't give him the gummy ones though, because they look too much like candy and I wouldn't want there to be any confusion between what is a vitamin and what isn't. (My husband and in-laws don't always do their best to read all labels.)

I give my 7 year old gummy vitamins. Several brands are out there from Spider Man to Gummy Bears and they are made with fruit juices and taste great. They also make Vita-Balls which are gumball vitamins. He likes some of the flavors. I have a 2 year old and I don't want her to get them which is why I prefer the gummy ones.

Jessica Steinfield also has a great book out about how you can sneak vitamins into your kids food. I.E. Use carrot baby food in meatloaf, hambergers and meatballs. Use cornflakes instad of bread crumbs.

Since we cannot get our son to take his vitamins nicely, we put them in his food. We make milkshakes or fruit smoothies daily, and put the ground up vitamins in it. He drinks it up really fast. We have also have him drinking Carnation Instant Breakfast when we get worried about him. He loves the stuff and it comes in chocolate, strawberry or vanilla.

The only type of vitamin my 5 year-old son will take is the gummy vitamins. He has a severe sensory processing disorder and is hyperaware of smells, tastes and textures - if he doesn't like the look, taste, or smell...it WILL NOT go in his mouth - PERIOD! He takes the gummy vitamins without a problem. That said - he will NOT take the sour ones (although he will eat sour candy, so go figure). The latest one he has been taking is the Disney Princess version (I bought them for my daughter and then the doc put her on one with flouride instead). To get his little zap of flouride in as well (there is not flouride in our water around here) I put the liquid flouride drops in his beverage choice dejour and he doesn't miss a beat.

I hope this helps - finding the gummy vites was a Godsend to us!

Hi J.,
I'm not sure what you tried, but we all LOVE gummy vites.
We also love Spirutein, which is a protein shake packed with vitamins that you mix with milk or juice. (Maybe start with a half portion.) Chocolate is yummy. Vitamin World has a good knock off, it's a bit more obvious perhaps? I forget what it's called, but we like that a lot too.

My son won't each much of anything... a few years back I discovered that he would eat Balance Bars, but only one flavor... Cookie Dough. They are a nutrition bar and have quite a few vitamins and minerals in them.

Nutritional Analysis

Low in cholesterol
High in iron
High in niacin
High in pantothenic acid
High in riboflavin
High in selenium
High in thiamin
Very high in vitamin A
High in vitamin B6
High in vitamin B12
Very high in vitamin C
Very high in vitamin E
High in zinc

Has 15 grams of protein, too. Bad point is the 18 grams of sugar. Sigh.

Also, you could work on teaching him how to swallow pills. Use M&Ms to practice! That way he could swallow the multi-vitamin without having to taste it! :)

Hope this helps.

Hello J.,

You may try crushing it up and sprinkle it on his peanut butter and jelly sandwich, sprinkle it on ice cream (he may like that!!). If he's allowed to have gum balls, they make vitamin gumballs. I would suggest disguising the gumball package and you can chew it a little bit for him and maybe chew one for yourself. Sometimes "following he leader" works. However, if you choose the gumballs, put them where he can't find them, just in case.

Hi J.,
I recently discoverd Vemma, the most complete liquid nutrtional product on the market, and I've had fantastic results! So much so, that I've started distributing the product. (yikes!) Vemma is the supplement that Dr. Mehmet Oz takes, you know, Oprah's doctor? It actually tastes great, and you could mix it with juice if your son didn't like it. One of the reasons I recently started taking a liquid supplement is because I found out that liquid supplements are absorbed up to 95% by your body, but traditional pills are only 10-20% absorbed. If you have any further questions, check out my website at www.myvemma.com/jenica,and you can e-mail me from there. Good luck! Jenica

Good luck with him. Also, if they make vitamin molds for something he is familiar with-scooby do, ect, mabeye he would take them if he got to pick wich one he could take that day.
Take care,

He shouldn't need a vitamin. Just try to make sure he gets a little of all of the stuff that is good. Fruit and nuts are good for snacks and full of the stuff he needs. Try different foods that he never had as well. He may not be feeling well when he eats certain things. Here are some links to help you:

Hi! I had the same problem with my 2yr old. She has never eaten well and all the vitamins I tried she spit out. I finally found a great vitamin that she loves. It's called Koala Pals. They are about the same price if not cheaper than any others I've tried. If you want to know where to get them send my friend Stephenie an email. She will get back to you right away. ____@____.com

OK two admission here, I haven't pureed a thing, I just buy baby vegetables and two, I don't follow the cookbook, I just got some great ideas! This week I put sweet potatoes in meatloaf & mac and cheese and squash on waffles and in eggs. Maybe not exactly what you are looking for but it sure helps get in the daily requirements!

Have you tried the vitamin gumballs or even the vitamin gummies. It's not the same situation, but my daughter used to get extremely constipated. The doctor suggested giving her half a laxative. We just told her it was candy and she was more than happy to take it. Kids love candy.

Dear J.,
Gummy Bear vitamins can be found at the health food store and taste just like the candy kind.

My picky eaters always ate yogurt (full fat, because they probably need it) when they could add thier own honey to it. 1/2 cup plain yogurs and give them a spoon and 1/4 cup of honey..

we have also tried several as I have one child that suddenly turned anti veggie and another w/ allergies - gummies are pretty good but you have to watch b/c even some of them have an irony taste - and stay clear of the natural non sweetened - the best, by far, are Nordic Berries - they are like orange gum drops and my kids ask for them - I had the chance to taste test a bunch at a health food store and can tell you that they really are good - I even take some from time to time - got them at a health food store in Florida and since home have found them through Dr. Wagner at Nutri Farmacy in North Hills - ###-###-####
www.nutrifarmacy.com
they'll mail them and I think the shipping and handling is free
the vitamins are about $20 or so
Dr. Wagner is a pharmacist who practices natural cures - he's good!

Hi J.,
this too will pass as kids all seem to go through eating phases. Supplements are important these days with quality of food and the kids' phases. My kids are older, but we all use a liquid whole food which is great; it looks and tastes like juice, so most younger kids like it too. I like to use a whole food rather than synthetics or tablets which are not as easily absorbed.
You can find me as a mom business or email me to set up a time to try the liquid. I decided to do this as my home business since this food has such a high impact on health.

Hi J.

My son is turning five next week and he also is not such a good eater. He wouldn't take vitamins for a long time but he loved Scooby Doo fizzies and most recently Centrum for kids with Spongebob on the bottle. The fizzies were his favorite but I have not seen them in awhile. There is a liquid vitamin that could be put into juice. Juice Plus is a brand that offers many alternatives for kids who do not eat all the fruits and veggies they need. I am sure there would be more specifics on their website. Many of my friends utilize Juice Plus and love it!

There area a bunch of books on the market about sneaking pureed or grated food into other dishes so the kids are getting nutrients without realizing. Deceptively Delicious by Jessica Seinfeld and The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids Favorite Meals by Missy Chase Lapine are two of the most recent.

Another strategy that's supposed to work on picky eaters is having them help in the kitchen; they're more likely to eat something they've "made" themselves. That's if you have time to work in the kitchen at all, which i realize not everyone does.

Also, if you do have time and also have space for a garden, have your child plant a few vegetables in a patch, tend them and help them grow. Even a garden of lettuce and carrots in pots by a bright window would work. A child often wants to eat the vegetables he or she is growing.

Arbonne offers a powder form of vitamin that kids love! It's flavored and colored with fruit and is just dissolves in water. I've heard of some moms making the punch - like liquid into popsicles. It's much easier saying "Eat your popsicle" than "Take your vitamin!" But the punch alone is easy to drink and tastes yummy. I'm not sure what his school or daycare allows, but he might find it cool to bring his own water bottle, filled with the punch, along in the mornings as long as you have an aggreement that he drinks it before lunch.
