Volvo XC90...Love It or Hate It?

I am going to buy a car that I will have for the next ten years. My last car was a 1997 Landrover and a 1995 Ford Probe. Both still run well and have over 200,000 miles on each car! Do you have a Volvo XC90? Tell me what you think. I want to get into another loving, long term, relationship with a car. I think this could be the one!

What can I do next?

Volvos are great but it looks like you've had American cars before. Just prepare youself for very expensive repairs when those do eventually come up now and then. My mother just paid $900 for a new airconditioner hose...some of the repairs have been covered under warrenty, that one was not! Look into a GOOD warrenty. Cheers!

We have had Toyota's since 1985, keeping each one for more than 12 years. Altho we bought the extended warranty, we never needed it. For a reliable car, there's nothing better. We've had Camry's and Avalon's. My present Camry is 12 years old and I plan to buy a hybrid Camry next year. Good luck.

I have been a Volvo girl for about 10 years now (2 different cars). I now drive a CX70 and love it. I feel good about driving my son in this car - safe and comfortable. You will not regret your decision to buy a Volvo.

LOVE IT! I have a 7 year ol dnad 3 yr old twins and it works perfectly for us. LOVE the extra back seat a little tight with the seats all up and the stroller no room for anythign else but we just put diaper bag on floor that i usually needed to reach to get into anyway. By next year with no stroller will be nicer but I have a great realationship and i am so in love with my car and the car before this one was a toyota that i loved and then a mercedes that i loved but i love this one MUCH better, she is my favorite! Perfect, got the tv and sun roof and well everything, not sure i wish i got the guard rails but it is easier for the kids to climb up but more in my way. Hope this helps

I just test drove a couple and loved it... I am in the process of deciding between this and the acura Mdx. Not sure which one yet but I called the insurance and both of these are cheaper because of safetly and reliability with the chasis.(won't tip over) they were cheaper than my current car that is 6 yrs old.
I've heard of the VOLVO having mechanical problems.. electrical. Has anyone heard of this or experienced it.

I had a 2004 XC90 for a year. I loved the way it looked and felt and functioned inside. That's the good. The bad is it breaks a lot. You should read consumer reports on it. I didn't and I regreted buying this car. Basically once the warranty ended we traded for an 2008 Highlander, which I absolutely love. The things that break are silly things, the window motor, the ballasts in the headlights (twice) and a bunch of simliar things. Also we needed new tires and that cost $1000.00 for 4 tires. We didn't get anything special. That was for basic all weather tires. On the mechanical side of things the transmition was rough. you could feel it switching through the gears as you accelerated. wasn't smooth.

I think they put all their money into the features and quality of materials they use inside and cheap out on the mechanics.

HI L.,

My daughter loved her XC90. She had so problems with it in the two years she had it. The only reason she got rid of it was that she got pregnant again and there was no room for another car seat and the two other kids. Good luck on your decision.

I absolutely love my XC90. I had the XC70 previously (the wagon) and find the XC90 to be such a nicer ride and much more spacious for passengers. I second the advice to go with the 3rd row, as if you're going to have more children, you're going to need the seats. Good luck!

No, I don't have a Volvo, you might want to check to see how much service and repairs cost.

I have a Camery, my husband never wanted one but after me having my Corella for 10 years with 240, 000 miles on it and never had a problem, he was convinced.
Just an idea.
I have driven the Volov 80, loved it!!
Good luck car shopping!

Buy AMERICAN! Why are 40% of Americans putting all these other countries to work and Americans, out of work??? Where is the rationale?? I just don't understand. Let's keep Chevy, Ford, and Chrysler back where they belong; on top!

We have one and I love it. It rides really smoothly and we have the third row seats - which comes in handy. I would highly recommend it and you can't beat it for safety.

We owned one for 6 months, and then traded it in for a Toyota Sequoia..which I absolutely love!!!...the inside of the Volvo is the size of a sedan. There is very little room for any car pooling, sports equipment, and school back packs...I have 3 children, and because it is not real easy to get into the far back seats, they would sit together in the immediate back seats and argue, because they were practically sitting on each others laps....I was very unhappy for those 6 months...think twice before you buy this car!!!

Please read my reply to Tonya who is deciding between the Acura and the Volvo XC90. I have buyer's remorse everyday with the Volvo XC90.
You are more than likely going to have some type of issue with the Volvo with terrible customer service and expensive repairs. I had the Lexus RX330 and never had issues but needed to get something larger. I have all the bells and whistles on my Volvo like nav, dvd, blindspot indicator, rear view camera but it's still not a great vehicle because I'm bringing it into the dealership for issues.
Yes, it's safe but it rides like a pick-up and will buy an Acura MDX next time.

We have had one for about three months now and I love it. It is very comfortable and an has lots of nice little features. We have the third row seat which is great for flexibilty. It also has a built in booster seat that will be nice for when my kids are older.

We also just discovered that it is our cheapest car to insure due to the safety features and anti-theft stuff- and our other cars are a Kia and an old Jetta. So that's a definite plus.

We are expecting out third child so we needed something with a little more space and it is great- huge cargo space with the back seats folded down and adequate space with them up. I recommend it.

I LOVE MY XC90! Everyone I know who has one loves them...

It was love at first sight! I special ordered mine when they first came out almost five years ago. and still love it today. i'm a busy working mom with two kids under the age of four and it has met every demand. it drives like a car but still has plenty of room for us. the "anti-roll stability" system is amazing. was on the highway and went to change lanes where there was someone in my blind spot, i quickly turned the wheel to get back in my lane and it was as if someone took control of the steering wheel and got me back in my lane without swerving - truly incredible! We bought it at Volvo of Lisle where we have had no problems with their service, which so far has ONLY been routine maintenance check-ups.

Worried about buying foreign? - it might be manufactured in Sweden, but Volvo is owned by Ford, so in my book that's an American company!

I'll be driving mine til it dies!

Love It! I have two boys and another on the way. It is a perfect car and very safe. It is going to be tight with three still in car seats, but we are going to try and make it work!

We have JUST purchased a new car and looked closely at the Volvo, among others. We wound up with a Buick Enclave, new in 2008. We've now had it for 3 weeks, and I couldn't be happier. The quiet is unparalleled, the detail related to comfort, ease of driving, and amenities are beyond our expectations, safety rating are top-notch, and I feel almost giddy every morning as I get in to drive to work. We have 7-passenger seating, but better yet, that last seat folds flat into the floor so easily to accommodate more cargo, when needed. I would suggest checking this one out before making a final decision.
