When my daughter was 8 months old she was diagnosed with VUR. She was put on Bsctrim and has been on it ever since. She will be 2 next month. She has never had any breakthrough infections but 2 weeks ago she had a fever with no other symptoms. We took her to the doctor and she was tested for an infection. It came back no infection but there was some blood present in the urine. The doctor said it was nothing to be alarmed about but it was something to watch. LAst week she ran a fever between 101-104 for 24 hours. The fever went away so we thought it was a 24 hour bug. For the past couple of days when I chang her diaper there has been a foul smell. I cant even describe it. I tried changing the brand of diapers and also her wipes but that didnt help the smell. She eats at least 1 yogurt a day. I feel like such an idiot constantly running to the doctor although they have been very understanding. On the same note I dont want to write it off and it turns into a bad infection. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and what you think it could be. Is it possible she has a UTI but shes not getting a high fever bc shes been on antibiotics for 15 months. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

So What Happened?

We went to the dr today and he said everything looks ok. He wants us to keep an eye on her and see if the smell gets worse. His words were it is what it is and sometimes these things just happen. Im a little upset that he didnt test her for a UTI given her problems but he said she doesnt have a fever so its probably not an infection. Thanks for your help and I will keep you posted if anything else happens.

Have her checked for a yeast infection. Yeast can come from antibiotics and if she has been on antibiotics for a while she could have one. It can give off a fishy smell and can also be very itchy. Do you notice any type of white discharge in her vaginal area? In the meantime try to get her to eat some yogurt that can help with yeast. If it is yeast she will need to be treated so call the doctor immediately. Yeast will also grow in warm moist areas so change her or if possible keep the diaper off her as much as you can so the area can stay dry. Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi, Yes it is possible that she has a UTI and I would take her back to the doctor so that they can treat it. That is not normal and at this point, due to the smell, yogurt won't help. She will need some antibiotics. My daughter, at three had a UTI with foul odor. I also changed her soap to the dove unscented and don't use wash clothes but my hands to wash them both. May sound weird but things get caught up in washcloths too and people don't have a habit of washing them out really well.

Also, when doing research don't go by Wikipedia. This site can be changed by people and not always accurate. Never trust it. Go to www.webmd.com.
That is a useful site.

Any abnormal smell coming from the diaper really should be checked out. If it's a yeast infection or a UTi...it needs to be addressed. I will, however, agree that for a yeast infection your best course of treatment is yogurt. Yogurt-as much as your child will eat for a few days. Antibiotics may not work, especially since your daughter has already been on atb for a long time.
Don't worry about running to the doctor-that's their job and what they are there for. It's better to be safe than sorry!!!!!!
Good luck!

While yeast infections can cause smelly discharge, they typically do not cause a fever.
How did they test for a UTI? In children with VUR a urine culture should be routinely performed every three months to exclude any breakthrough infections or resistances.
Because your daughter is on long term antibiotic treatments you will also want to have the doctors exclude other infections, like bowel or vaginal (yeast or resistant bacteria).
Go back until you get a satisfying answer.
Good luck!
