Waking up Wet

Recently, my 8 month old daughter started waking up wet. I use Pampers and have never had this problem before. She's eating/drinking the same amount before bed. Has anyone else had this problem? What can I do about it?

What can I do next?

Hi there-
I have been through this. You can do one of two things.
1. Buy overnight diapers from Huggies
2. Buy the next size up diapers from Pampers and use at night
Either of these should help.

My son had the same problem. I think it was because he was holding his pee at night and then he'd go in the AM when he woke up and it would just overflow since it couldn't absorb it fast enough. I don't know if an 8 month old can hold her pee though. You can try going up a size in her diaper for night time. This worked for us for while but then he eventually started to wet thru again then I switched him to Huggies Overnights. These worked really well. You can get her normal size in the Overnights. Don't confuse the Huggies Overnights with the Goodnights.

I agree with the bigger size diapers and would also suggest the new *ultra* absorbency Pampers. I buy these at BJ's and only use them at night; my little guy used to soak through and we've had a good 2 month run with the ultras, only breaking through the last few nights (which means it's time to buy the next highest size in Ultras :). They cost more than regular Pampers but if you only use them at night they last really long. Honestly, they are worth every cent as they really are super-soakers :)

Good luck!

FYI... Huggies Overnights are cheapest at Babies R Us. They only come in sizes 3, 4, 5. They are about 61 cents per diaper... a little more than double regular Pampers.

I had a similar problem.... turns out I just didn't have the diaper on tight enough in the waist. If it wasn't that, it was because the leg gathers weren't fanned out the right way.
Take care,

My son used to wet the crib when he was almost between sizes (a little too small for one, a little too big for the next). Try a different brand of diaper or go up a size. I LOVED Huggies nighttime diapers because they soaked up a LOT. They are hard to find but I used to find them at Target or ordered online at drugstore.com.

I would also suggest getting some ultimate crib sheets (you can get at Babies R US or online at amazon.com). They are these plastic-backed sheets with snaps/loops on the ends that attach to the rungs of the crib. I used to make the crib (mattress pad and sheet) and then put one of these on top. If the baby wakes up soaked, you can whip off the top sheet and have a dry bed underneath. There was nothing worse than making a full bed at 3 am!

Good luck!

we put our boys in a larger size up for bedtime. it may look silly but.... they are sleeping through the whole night and the only reason they are waking is b/c they are wet! for example my littlest is in a size 3 and he wears a 4 or 5 as the last diaper of the night : )

ps... i like huggies better too for the nightime diaper. they don't seem to get as big and bulky when they are wet.

She may not be warm enough at night. I had the same problem with my sons, and I think it has to do with the cooler nights and the limbo stages in what to dress them in, shorts vs pants, long sleeve vs short.

Hi S.,
My daughter, all of a sudden, started waking up wet also (I also use Pampers). Since I've only had a problem at night, I've been using a bigger size diaper at night. My daughter is regularly in a size 3 diaper. I've been putting her in a size 4 at night. I figured it's a little bit bigger so it will absorb a bit more than the size 3. I put her in a new diaper right before bed, I've been doing for a few weeks, and haven't had any problems since.
Hope this helps.

Hi there S.!

Yes! My 8 month old son does that also. I use Target diapers during the day and they work fine. I found that the trick is using a larger size diaper at night. Although my baby is still in 3's (almost needs a 4) I put him in size 5 diapers for night time. It simply helps to have more of an absorbent surface.

The only downfall is that in the morning I have to wipe or wash higher up his belly, since the diaper surface comes in contact with more skin. However, that is much better than having to go through a peed on crib sheet, a blanket, and pajamas! LOL.

Hi S.,
Everyone seems to be saying the same thing. Bigger size diaper for night time. I agree. Same thing happened to my daughter. I also use pampers. I couldn't believe how wet she would be in the morning. So I just used the next size up for night, (which for me was a 4), and size 3 for daytime. I hope all the advice helps. I still use pampers cruisers and they are working just fine.

same thing has been happening to my nine month old son. I also use pampers. I did run out of his size threes but had fours on hand over the past couple days, since than he gas not woken up wet. So maybe she is ready for the next size? Also, I was at B.J.s this morning, they now have "ultra absorbency" cruisers. Could work. I did not buy them. I figured I would stick with the threes during the day (since that is where he is weight wise) and save the fours for the night.

The funny thing about motherhood is that just when you have a routine the baby changes it. Our babies grow so quickly that something that worked two days ago may change. My daughter was the same way. Her body is growing including her bladder. I found that changing her at 12 midnight allowed me a few hours of rest in the a.m. this way I'm not waking up at 3 or 4 am to changer and she sleeps till 7a.m. Hang in there and just remember you are not alone!

I believe Pampers has a "night-time" diaper for babies. They are bulkier than the regular kind of pampers but absorb alot more for the night time! I have friends who swear by these diapers - it's worth a try!

Are you putting any kind of vaseline or creams on her bottom at night? I learned a lesson that I was using too much vaseline and it was blocking the diaper from absorbing the pee. So check on that, otherwise like someone else said, you might need to go up a size in diapers. They also have night time diapers. I perfer LUVS and never had leaks with those.
Best of Luck

Yes, I have had that problem. My daughter went through a good couple weeks of waking up soaked almost every morning. I don't know why it happened, but it did. It still happens every now and then, but I think it's because we cloth diaper and we weren't double stuffing her diaper at night even though she likes to drink a cup of water before she goes to bed. What were we thinking??
I have noticed disposable stuffers in the grocery store. You might want to give those a shot at night. Can't hurt.
I wouldn't worry about it. Some kids just go through phases of peeing a lot at night. If you can't find the disposable stuffers, you could invest in some cloth diapers for night time. They're much easier to control the absorption and they last forever.
Hope that helps!

I agree with the option to go up a size. I have found that if we are within 3lbs. of the weight limit - my kids can usually go up a size. With my first however, we used pampers and then she was always leaking. We tried every brand and ended up using luvs for quite a while. They worked great for a year(and are cheaper) and then they didn't either. Well after more experimentation we ended up back with pampers.
My 3 month old is currently using Huggies - which never ever worked for my daughter.
For what ever reason, kids change and their diaper needs do, as well.
We are actually in the process of phasing out disposables and switching to cloth. They are really easy now a days and come in a variety of styles. It's actually fun - and there isn't any poop scraping involved.
There is a ton of info on line if this presents any interest.
good luck.

I think we all go through this...they do make some over night diapers which are good, and some "inserts" like giant pads/liners for the diapers. I have used them all. I used plastic underpants last year over the diapers so I was not changing sheets, ect, every morning..I think walmart/target sells them with the bibs or baby sock section. They are also good if your baby has any of those stomach bugs or if you are traveling/in a car seat for an extended period of time.

I did have this problem too. First make sure you change her diaper just before bed! If you do a bedtime routine the last thing you should do in the routine is change the diaper then put her right in bed. You also may need to cut back a little on night time fluids.
I use Pampers too & really like them however if you are using Cruisers that may be the problem. I tried Cruisers for the first time a month ago & he always woke up soaked. I went back to the regular "Flex" Pampers & no more soaked diapers. Also I live Luvs diapers even better than Pampers but cannot get them just any where near where I live so that is why I use mostly Pampers. Good luck!

I agree with some of the other ladies, bigger size or different brand. Luvs are great, I find huggies to be best. Pampers just don't absorb well at all. Also, don't worry too much. Some days they just pee more than others, really isn't a whole lot you can do about it... Good Luck

I read all the responses, a lot of "go up a size in diaper" or "try Huggies Overnights" but my daughter can't use Huggies, she's allergic, and I tried the larger diapers, but if she'd had a looser stool, it would leak out. So I purchased several of the plastic diaper covers and that took care of the leakage problem.

By the way, I did find that the reason my daughter went from not waking up wet to waking up wet with no change in the amount of fluid she took in was because she would sleep differently. She started sleeping more soundly and would spend more time on her belly or her back and then the pee would pool there and she'd wake up soaked through, but the opposite side of the diaper would be dry...

Anyway, good luck!

I agree with the other ladies that you might need to go to a bigger size, but I also wanted to share my experience. I used Pampers with my two kids and loved them. Once I started having your same problem with my son and the size was not the issue. I thought it might be a faulty batch of diapers so I called Pampers customer service and they took my information and sent me a coupon for the value of the pack of diapers. You might want to try that also. Good luck.

Go up a size in her diapers. That's usually a sure sign that the diapers are too small. Even if she is within the weight limits for the size she is in I have found with my kids that it is not very accurate. Every baby is shaped differently and you can't go by the weights listed on the package.

When our little guy started doing this we learned about "double-diapering" and it worked really well. We used the size he was in as the inner layer and the next size up for the outer. It was amazingly effective. We were actually able to re-use the outer diaper occasionally, as his production wasn't consistently excessive. This was a phase, we stopped needing to do it after about 5 months. The other thing which worked well was diaper inserts. They looked like old-style feminine pads, and you just slide it into the crotch area of the diaper. They were super-absorbent! I bet actual maxi pads would work just as well...hee hee. Anyway, both of these methods worked beautifully - best of luck!

Try using a new diaper that pampers just came out with super dry? Or even the cruisers. We had the same issue. I tried Huggies and it was just worse. I would just try a different type of pampers... also it may be time to go a size up. We found that even though the weight was off from where our daughter was it helped us. Good luck!
