Want a Decent Thermometer

I would really like to find a good thermometer to use for my little boy. We received one as a shower gift and it's no good. It seems like every one we've ever bought is junk. Last night I was trying to take his fever and he had a fever of 94. I would be alarmed if I hadn't have checked mine and my husbands and we also had around a 94. No good! Anyone actually have a good one that they would recommend? I'm getting ready to throw my hands up and admit thermometer defeat!
Thanks a bunch!

I bought one at walmart that is like a pacifier. It took my daughter a little while to get used to it and then she was taking it like her paci.

We have had the same problem and I asked our pharmacist and he suggested Vicks. It has 3 settings on it where you can take the temp oral, underarm or rectal. It is very accurate, a little more expensive (around $25.00) than the regular digitals but much less than most eat thermometers. After puchasing it I took it with me the next time we went to the dr just so that I could see how accurate it was with the professional one that they use. It was dead on checking mine and both of my daughters. Hope this helps and good luck.

I have always relied on a glass mercury thermometer. Before my kids could hold it under their tongue, I took it in their armpit and added one degree. I've heard they don't make mercury thermometers anymore though???

you might try the ear thermomiter from Babies R Us. It is quick and pretty accurate. The thing you have to remember is to add 1 degree to the temp and the thermometer needs to be inside the ear to read corectly. We tried the one from walgreens and had trouble with it reading in Ferenheight, somehow it got switched and we couldnt switch it back. Keep the booklet that comes with it so you can switch the scale if it goes to Celcious. I usually check both ears and take the higher temp of the two.

Don't know what kind you're using, but don't use an ear thermometer! Mine either says that my temp is 92.4 or 104.4, in the same minute!
I just use a regular, $10 digital and take her temp. in the armpit. If you do an armpit read though, remember to add a degree. If you do it rectally, subtract a degree.

I got a temporal before I had my son and I love it! I bought it at walmart and it was cheaper than the ear ones. My son does not fight at all in fact he wants to take our temps too. Good luck finding something you like and that works for you. W.

I second the Temporal Thermometer-it's what our Doctor uses and it is so easy. We bought ours at Sams and its great. As a mom of 3 I think this is the best solution for us because it's easy for the bigger and little ones. It doesn't hurt their ears when their ears are already bothering them, it's not evasive like the rectal and I am not having to sit on them to get them to sit still for the armpit or mouth-just works so much easier. Stick with the ordinary glass thermometer and check under the arm. Can't go wrong that way. You are never going to be certain with any of the other thermometers, once the battery starts going down you never know what kind of reading you'll get. Better to play it safe in my book.

I highly recommend getting a temporal thermometer. It’s what our pediatrician uses, and we’ve had good luck with ours for over two years. It’s extremely easy to use--just hold down a button and run it across the patient’s forehead. If used properly, the accuracy of the results is comparable to those obtained with a rectal thermometer.

When our babies were little, a regular thermometer taken rectally offered the best results. As the children got a little older (I think by 6 months- when they skirm too much for the rectal), we started using the Braun ExacTemp ThermoScan ear thermometer & have been using it ever since (for 5 years!) The battery lasts a long time & we've had good accuracy with it. I always take the temp in both ears to make sure I've gotten it in a good position & that the reading is about the same.
I haven't tried a temporal thermometer, but my sister has one, and she's very happy with it.
Good luck!

I have always used the Braun; it's a little more expensive but a heck of a lot easier. I usually take 3 readings, and alternate ears. It's important to get it in the right position.
