Wanting to Hear Good/bad Stories About Mirena

Hello moms....I had Mirena inserted about three weeks ago and am still bleeding. I have read several things that say this is normal, so I'm not to worried about it. Every once in awhile I get a shooting pain in my right leg, but I am a teacher so this may be the problem. I stumbled across a website that has horrible reviews on Mirena, with a lot of women saying they are depressed, etc. I am wanting to hear your experiences with Mirena, the good and the bad. So far I feel fine, I didn't even have any cramping after it was inserted. I am getting annoyed by the bleeding but only because I am on my feet all day and only have about one chance all day to use the restroom. Any advice or stories on how you like or don't like yours would be greatly appreciated!

From others that I have talked to, I think I am an unusual case. I have had Mirena for 3 1/2 years and got it 8 weeks after my baby girl was born. I had not had a period yet and I still have not had one. I know one of my coworkers had it and then had it removed. She thought it made her emotional and kept her from losing weight. I like mine so much I am thinking about doing it again for the next 5 years! The only thing I wonder about is if it is what is causing me to not be as interested in sex...but there are several factors there! Full time work, two kids, housework, etc!!

I did have bleeding at the beginning, but after that, I didn't have my period for about 2 years! Loved it!
I just had it removed after 2 and 1/2 years to have another baby though.
I didn't have any depression or any weight gain, got back down to my pre-preg weight. I did start to break out a little, but that could be from anything.
I highly recommend it.
And getting it taken out was super easy, much less painful than getting it put it.

I've had Mirena twice...after both my kids, this last time has been almost 4 yrs.
I've never had any negative side effects (other than the annoyance of 3-4 weeks of bleeding at the start). My naturally long, incredibly crampy and painful periods are now an almost unnoticeable 1, maybe 2 days, of light spotting. I have absolutely loved the Mirena and am planning on getting another when this current 5 yrs is up next year... even though my husband has taken care of the birth control permanently! Like I said, I've had no complaints and it's done wonders for my comfortability each month and I'm not ready to give that up!!

I had mirena for two years. My periods were horrible the whole time. I never knew when they were coming and I had horrible bleeding and cramps with each one. It did not affect my mood while I had it in but when it was removed I had a couple weeks of craziness! I have had it out for a year and have had no luck trying to concieve. The only thing I liked about it was not having to remember birth control. But maybe if I would have had lighter to no periods with it like my doctor said then I would have liked it!
good luck!

I've had my IUD for almost 16 months and I love it. My acne didn't disappear like it did with the pill/pregnancy but otherwise I can't think of a thig I do't like.

Hello R.,

I've had mirena for about three years. I haven't had any major problems. I've had spotting, and the occasional heavier periods that lasted about 1-2 days. I haven't experienced any depression or bleeding that lasted beyond a few days.

I imagine it depends how your body handles it. If your body goes through anything that you feel is out of the ordinary, then it wouldn't hurt to call your dr. I'm sure he'd like to know your concerns.

Good luck!! ls

I used Mirena for about a year and then had it removed. I decided to let God plan our family instead. My experience with it was good, for awhile. Over the years I have gone from Depo to a diaphragm to BCP to Mirena. Depo made me gain weight and the pills depressed me and my sex drive. diaphragm has to be fitted after each pregnancy. So I tried Mirena, bleeding was about 2 or 3 weeks and not very heavy but I would bleed for about a day when I would normally have my period (which meant I was ovulating). Now I know mirena is an abortcificant (worked in pharmacy for 10 years, so are BCP)so I knew I could still get pregnant but the IUC would "Take care of that", what I did not expect was how long it could take before that happens. I had at least 2 cycles in which the Mirena acted in this manner and on the final occasion I "passed" what is usually termed a "mass of cells" unless you want to pe pregnant then it would have been a miscarriage. I wanted that IUD out so fast I almost didn't wait for my dr to remove it. I don't say this with any malice or harmful intent but I just want you to know what I did not. As a side note they recommend you wait at least 3 cycle to get pregnant (and it almost always takes that long according to the lit.) I got preg. within my first cycle and now have a healthy happy baby girl.

I had mine put in a couple months after my son was born 18 months ago. No complaints here! At first, I bled for about a month. But now I don't have periods, though I may spot once a couple months or so. No cramps, no mood swings. Though, I am not one to have mood swings anyway. My husband 'feels' the strings sometimes during intercourse, but says it doesn't hurt. I absolutely love it!

I have had Mirena since 10/06/08. I have been very happy with it, but I must say that the first 3-4 months were terribly annoying. I bled for that who time, but then I have either had no period or just very light spotting. I think that like most birth control, it affects everyone differently. I wouldn't go back to any other kind. Good luck to you.

I had the Mirena for about 9 months and I never stopped getting period the whole time. I had it taken out because I would get a slight pain in my pelvis from it and it caused me to have depression. I never thought that the depression was caused by the Mirena until I started reading some info on it online. After I got it taken out, I got back to normal after a couple of months. I have a good friend who has had it for 2 years and has spotting all the time, even now. A lot of people love it though and have no problems. I would give it some time to see how your body is going to react to it and go from there.

I had my mirena inserted during the 2 month f/u visit of my second born son( I have 2 boys no girls). I have always had irregular periods any way, but for the several months I still had the same type periods. after about 1 year though I pretty much stopped altogether. I just have occasional spotting. It's so nice not to have to worry about buying tampons and pads and dealing with all that!! I have always had some post partum depression and have still been struggling with that from time to time( same happened after the first son was born). This is why we decided to try the mirena instead of the pill or some other form that I may forget to take or do!!!! We are Christians too, but we still feel like there are times when we have to take responsibility for ourselves if we know that emotionally, pyschologically, and physically(I am still trying to lose 6o pounds, my thyroid is hypo or underactive so that makes it harder and that also plays a role in the depression) we can't handle more kids than we need to do something to prevent it!!!Oh and not to mention the fact that we are poor!! Hang in there a little longer, you'll probably find you really like it!!

I will never recomend mirena for anyone especially just to control periods. I hated it and I stuck it out for a year. I had it put in 6-8 weeks after my daughter was born and during those 6-8 weeks I felt great and happy. but after getting mirena put in I had one period and then they completely stopped. I gained back all the weight i had lost after birth and ended up with back pain and was tired all the time. I lucked out my daughter has slept through the night from day one. I had to wake her up to feed her during the day so i wasn't tired from a constanst crier.

I had cramps around the time of when i should have had my period. my moodswings were horrible to the point that ppl told me i was nicer when i was pregnant. I eventually got to the point that everytime my daughter cried I couldn't take it and would yell at her to shutup. thats not like me normally. eating habits changed and there are a lot of sideaffects that they do not let you know about.

sorry this is so long but each person is different. while i had no period my best friend would bleed for nearly a month every time she has her period. since she already was bipolar it has made those issues worse.

if you have ever had issues with ovarian cysts it will make those worse and it is possible for it to fall out or poke through your uterus. I have been dealing with depression ever since having mirena put in and since i've had it taken out i've been off ever since. but each person does react differently to different hormones and drugs. although if your sensitive to hormones then be prepared for trouble.

I have used Mirena for a few years now and I haven't had any problems physically. I know from Mamasource that there are bad side effects for some people and now I'm wondering if my frequent irritability has something to do with it. Anyway, my periods are practically nonexistent and I don't notice any other physical side effects. Good luck.

I got Mirena last Oct about 2 1/2 months after I had my 2nd baby. I bled like a normal period for a few weeks, then just spotting but it was still enough that I would have to use a tampon for "light days". It would stop for maybe a day or two or half the day I wouldn't bleed at all. But I pretty much bled from the time I got it in October until I got it removed in Feb. So if you ask me I hated it. And I also defiantly think it made me feel depressed. I know it wasn't PP depression because I was feeling fine for the first couple months after I had the baby, before I got it. When I told my doc she kind of looked at me like I was crazy, but I too read alot of forum's where other women had the same thing.

It's a hard call. My sister in law has it and only bled for a few weeks then stopped and has had only 1 or 2 periods since and she loves it. I guess it just effects everyone different and you don't know until you try it. I'm not sure how your insurance works but with mine I only had to pay the $25 doc visit co-pay to get it put in, and if I got it taken out before the 5 years I had to pay like $175. But I know some people who have to pay like $400-$600 just to get it.

Good luck!
