Wash them together on hot. Don't waste time, water, and detergent doing separate loads. Washing and drying removes all the "yucky" stuff, it doesn't just move it around from one towel to another.
Out of curoisity, do you wash dish towels with bath towels? My husband and I disagree with this. I know they all supposedly come out clean in the end, but I don't want random hairs on my dish cloths. What's your protocol? Not a life and death question by any means, but just curious ;) Thanks!

I wash them together, always have. I've never found hair on my dish towels or food on my bath towels.
I wash all the towels together. It just seems completely wasteful to do it separately. And if you wash them on hot AND with pinesol they're completely disinfected.. and ALWAYS put them in the dryer or else there may be some stuff on them.
Towels are towels.
They go in together on HOT.
Sorry.
And you don't think some of the things your kitchen towels seem are yucky? Just asking.
I wash them together, but it's funny, when I read your question, I would have thought you'd be worried about all the yucky cleaning stuff on your bath towels, not the other way around! So yeah, dirt is dirt, and they call come out clean.
Couldn't you just pick a hair off if you found one? What do you wash your underwear with -- considering what they touch and what could come off on other things?
Haven't ever thought of this before. Everything seems to come out so clean that I have also washed all towels together.
Apparently it's you and me against the world! I do not wash them together, not because of the hair (although now it'll bug me) but because we use rags instead of papertowels and the thought of any grease or oil getting on my bath towels grosses me out.
we wash all together :)
a towel is a towel wash them together saves time and money
so funny you asked this. i used to separate eeeeeverything, i was obsessive about it...dark clothes, light clothes, red clothes, hubbys socks, underwear, his clothes, my own clothes, floor towels, hand towels, bath towels, bedding, and certainly the babys stuff, each had separate loads. i dont even use dish towels, i think theyre gross, no offense, i invest a small fortune in paper towels.... now, i have 3 kids, 4 if you include hubby :) and my laundry has taken on a life of its own. i throw absolutely everything in together except for new darks/reds and hubbys socks and underwear. i wash on hot and rewash some loads if they seem like i should. i could easily do 2 loads a day every day and not be caught up ever. i dont even buy things that need to be ironed, and very rarely buy anything that cant be thrown in the dryer if i can possibly help it. im sitting amongst 4 loads folded all over my couch right now...sigh....
I guess if you hang dry your towels there is a possibility of a hair on a dish towel. But our washer and dryer does not leave hair on any of our laundry.
We wash them together. what do you wash your dishtowels with ? Clothing? Underpants, pants, shirts, sheets? They all have the potential for hair and skin.
I do... I've never noticed hair on any of the towels... doesn't everything like that get caught in the lint trap?
Wash 'em together!!! Never had a problem!!!
I wash them together. I have never noticed hair on my kitchen towels either.
Yes, I do. I don't have any problems with hair, and I also own 3 dogs - I think a good dryer will collect everything in the lint trap.
All of my bath and dish towels go in the same load. I have a steam washer, so I put them in the Sanitize cycle. I have never had any problems with hair on my dish towels! =)
NO!!!!!! I do not but my husband DOES!!!!!! My parents always separated so I do, with no good reason. Really people who say it all comes out clean are kidding themselves. It doesn't. But should that stop you from washing together? NO!! I use cloth diapers and wash poop out with one load and then wash clothes with the next and then towels with the next, ask your hubbies who watch Mythbusters, whatever food and fecal, and cleaning particles are in your clothes and towels in one load stays (in little amounts) in your machine to pass on to the next load! YAY!!! It is a happy party in there! (I'm in Yo Gabba Gabba mode right now) I will regularly run an empty load with bleach thru my machine since I do cloth diapers, but has anyone gotten sick? No. We (as a culture) are just super sensitive about the appearence of cleanliness. It is okay. We will live and thrive either way!
PS. My husband just said, "If it smells good and you don't see s#*t then it doesn't matter!"
I use to then my hubby had a fit then I stopped. Even though I always washed them on hot in a long cycle. Then when we got our front large loader, I started back again.... Now I have Stopped AGAIN!!! LOL.... We went through an MRSA problem in our house which we were able to get rid of (Thank Goodness); but after that, I have gone back to washing them seperate... Just seems like a big waste to wash them seperate, but mentally I can not get over it again... I have never found a hair or anything else when washing them together. I sure hope they come out clean. So I guess I would think it was ok either way that gives you a peace of mind.
No, I don't wash them together either, I also wash sucks alone because washing them with anything else seems yucky to me.
I wash the baby clothes separate too because she has delicate skin and I use special soap on hers.
I spend a lot of time doing laundry ;0(
I've never separated them, and never thought to. I can't recall ever finding hairs on any of the towels. They get washed in hot on a long cycle and I add things like bleach or vinegar and baking soda. I like the pinesol idea, so I am going to try that too.
Never wash them together, seems yucky to me!!
Do you believe that soap works? If you don't then you must believe that everything is still dirty when it comes out of the washer. I wash my light towels in warm water and start the water and add the soap, I let it fill some and add a bit of bleach. When it is almost full I add the towels. The bleach kills any germs that normal soap doesn't. I never put dish rags or dish towels in the washer if they have food debris on them, I swish them around in the sink and then add them to the wash load.
I believe soap works. On hands, on laundry, and on just about anything else too.
I was them separately and would not compromise on this matter. You are thinking the right way as the matriach of the household. :-)
I wash mine all together. I never thought about hairs getting on my dishtowels, kinda gross, but in all my years of doing laundry...16ish....have yet to find a hair!
I separate stuff into 2 piles...those that can be bleached and those that cant...and I always wash our bleached items in hot water.
I wash all mine together and have even washed the towels with the jeans if needed to make a full load. with spending 100.00 a month for our basic water bill for a family of 5 there is no way I would wash a few dish cloths and towels separate. Yes I bought into the front loader as I was told it would cut our water bill a lot but didn't see a difference, in fact my last washer held a lot more clothes than our large capacity front loader so I have to do more loads of laundry now than before.
I'm with you...I wash mine separate, have for years. I'm a little bit of a germ freak though!
I separate stuff by colors period. Well, except for jeans because they wear everything else out more quickly but rubbing against them as they're so rough.
Nope. Although I'll wash dish towels with beach towels.
I should also add... I use a new dish towel every day (can't STAND the idea of decaying food and sour smells touching clean things I'm going to be eating or serving off of, yuck). They mostly just get washed by themselves. I hang the old one to dry at night, grab a new one in the morning, and toss the dry one in a mesh sack with it's sibs to await the wash.
HOWEVER
DRYING towels, the thin muslin kind, that only ever touch clean dishes... yup... those go in with bath towels all the time (aka once a week). But they're not oily, or have food bits, or cleaning chemicals, or any of the other things dish towels get on them.
I used to seperate towels from other clothes BC (Before Child). I washed all towels - kitchen and bath - with socks because they were all white and that load got bleached. (I wanted my socks bleached too and couldn't see doing a whole load for several pair of socks all by themselves.) I had no issue because I figure if I did find a hair, it went through the wash too, so it was as clean as the clothes! (I have very long hair, so it winds up everywhere!) Now I don't seperate anything. My clothes with kiddo's and the towels and the bedding.....whatever fits in the washer. One load after the next. Works for me!
I don't wash them together and if for some reason a dish towel gets in with the bath towels then it becomes a bath towel. I think it is gross to wash them together. I agree I don't want any hairs of any kind on my dish cloths and honestly I usually dry what few dishes I do by hand with paper towels.
Too much laundry to add a separate load. :) Never really thought about it. I may have separated them at our old house where we had the smallest washer/dryer available and I had to do a bunch of tiny loads. But now that we have a big front loader, I combine everything I can. Whites are always separate and baby clothes, but other than that, I still sort, but combine when possible.
Thanks for asking this question! I have always wondered about this. I DO separate my towels. I know think im in the minority. I think its gross to wash them together. I cant imagine wiping my dishes with a towel that was swished around with towels that I can only imagine what my sons have done with! Dirty butts, well I wont even go there. I honestly was hoping when I saw this, more people would say they separate. I am bummed and a little grossed out now! : |
I was hoping for a definitive answer. I wash bath towels with personal washrags and white socks, these have been around private areas and dirty feet....and they just don't seem to go with clean plate touching dish towels. When I lived in a house, i did small loads of kitchen dish towels and hands only towels. Now I am in an apartment, and the smallest load at the nearby laundry is a double load. I don't want to wash 4 or 5 dish towels in the big washer. Now it is a dilemma for me LOL!!!
