Ways to Prevent Lice

My doctor told me to keep hair products like gels, hairspays and such items in my daughters hair. He said that the lice do not like that stuff because of the stuff in it and it also puts a coating over the scapl and hair that they can niot adhere to.

C., been there done that and I found out that the ingredients in hair color and high lite kits are not liked by lice, so needless to say I colored my hair and highlited my daughters hair, you don't have to go wild with it it's the chemicals they don't like and you will have no more problems.

C...There is a product called Fairy Tales Haircare. They have shampoo to keep you from getting it and other products if you already have it. If you live in the Cincinnati area there is a salon in Dillonvale called "Hair Care 2" that sells it. They have the complete line.

Cutting your hair will not prevent lice infestations. Lice can live in short or long hair. I would try to VO5 treatment listed below.

You can also try using a garlic supplement (there are capsules you can take if you don't like the taste or smell of garlic). It can work as a repellent because little critters like fleas and lice don't like the taste of it.

Helen (below) has some great advice too. Lice hate vinegar (use a good, natural Apple Cider Vinegar), and coconut oil has natural antibacterial properties. Most pests hate coconut oil! It's extremely beneficial for us, though. Good tip, isn't it? :-D

It sounds like the daycare isn't following proper cleaning for lice. Or, there is another child who keeps bringing it in. My daughter had it when she was younger and I put every single stuffed animal and doll with hair in a plastic bag and sealed it up for a whole month. I also washed all bed sheets and all blankets in hot water. If you have done all you can, I would talk to the supervisor of the daycare. Good Luck, T.

to get rid of lice there is a spray that you get and its all natural go to your local heath and natural store it works wonders. Also to keep from getting lice put hair spray in the hair every day. The lice do not like it. I have never had head lice, my grandmother made sure I got hair spray everyday.

To be honest, the only real way to keep from getting lice is, keeping away from those who have it. Do NOT share any items or articles from those who have it.
Lice like any hair type, especially CLEAN hair.
The best stuff to use for it cannot be prescribed either. You go to Walmart or a health store, purchase Tea Tree Oil and a it to a bottle of shampoo..you don't need the whole bottle, about 10 drops to an 8oz bottle...or you can use dish soap as well. We had done the tea tree oil, with baby shampoo, cover entire head dry, until its saturated with the shampoo, leave in for 25minutes, rinse and comb throughly. Check for live lice and pull the eggs out.
So far, its been a success, and we haven't had any problems for the last year. My kids contacted it from my sisters kids...and since they've all moved away, we haven't had anymore problems. So just in case it happens again, you have this to try out. Good Luck!

You can't "keep rid of lice" and cutting your hair and their hair only means there is less hair for the lice to get into but they will come to visit!
We had a similiar problem when my children were in daycare and once in public school. If someone at the daycare has lice then they will be in the carpets, sleeping mats, and if they have coats and hats that are hung together they will jump, etc.. Unless they treat the facility and have the children who have them stay home for treatment for a couple of days you will continue to have the problem. I wish I had better news. I threatened to call the Board of Health and turn the daycare in. They had to close for two days and take care of the problem and check the children coming in and send the two children who were the spreading the problem home instead of letting them stay.
The lice were in the school bus, believe it or not, on the public school side. It took three sets of parents jumping down the throats of the transportation department and the school to get that one resolved. I noticed the lice both times first on my son who had a short military hair cut. I am a licensed cosmetologist so believe me I was freaking out. My son had 3 and my daughter had 5 or 6 the first time. They hadn't been there in the morning when I sent them off to daycare but they were there when they bathed that night.

Always put up their hair. When you find lice, Wash everything in hot water put all their stuffed animals in a plastic bag for at least 2 weeks. Invest in a GOOD lice comb to get those nits out. Also, dipping the comb in cider vinegar or white vinegar will help to loosen the nits and make them easier to comb out of their hair. Continually check their hair for 2 weeks after the discovery of lice. Make sure that their stuff in daycare is kept separate from other peoples stuff. If they hang them next to each other, take a white garbage bag for the kids to keep their stuff in. Vacuum all upholstery and carpeting and spray it down. Best of luck to ya.

I think I would be finding another day care. If this is a continuous issue, it's obviously not going to be fixed or under control anytime soon. Christy B is right, you HAVE to thoroughly clean the entire house and anything your children have come in contact with (cars, etc). Good luck!

you can not wash your hair everyday. like every other day or every 2 days. i know its gross but this what a friend of mine has done to her daughters hair and she doesnt get it anymore.

Hi, After the last time my daughter brought lice home from school (last year), we treated the whole household with an over the counter product (RID or something like it). That didn't completely work but it helped. We used the nit comb RELIGIOUSLY. After using the store product (RID) according to instructions, we started using Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner until the lice were gone, then we switched to Suave Coconut shampoo and conditioner because I read that it can help prevent lice. We haven't had a problem since (knock on wood!). If I had to do it again, I might try just the Tea Tree products first to try to avoid the nasty chemicals. Good luck! :)

I have heard to use coconut shampo, and I would also report it to the daycare center---because unless you are re-infecting your self with it---some one at the day care has it.

I had this battle when my daughter was in 3rd grade. I don't know if they sell it around here but in West Virginia I bought a product called LiceGuard, we started using it daily and no more lice. It is made by ARR Health Tech., Inc, you can call 1-888-994-8213. I just got that off our old empty bottle. My daughter is now in 5th grade and since buying this stuff, we haven't dealt with lice since. Good luck!!

Growing up I had to battle lice, once from a school out break and two more times when I was older and baby-sitting. The mother of the girls I was watching refused to trest her girls, she refused to believe her girls were "dirty". I had to refuse to watch her girls until she treated them, it put a cramp in her social life so she finally did it.

Tell your daycare that your girls keep getting lice from there. Your daycare should then be able to screen the children and find out who needs to be treated to stop the spread from happening again. I know my school would send everyone home the moment they found out someone had lice, they sent notes with the children telling the parents to treat the kids and that on the day they returned to school the school nurse would check them again to make sure the parents did as requested. If a child was found with nits they were send home again with another note. I think your daycare might do something similar.

I have had a couple of friends have this issue as well as me. We have found that Listorine works well on killing the lice and knits as well as making your hair healthier. Pour the listorine (original green) on the scalp and let it set of about 2 minutes then wash your hair as normal. Do this every other day for 2 weeks and you will find the lice and knits are gone. This with the cleaning of all of your furniture and bedding will work.

Out of my 4 kids only the 4th one had lice on a couple of occassions. I was at my wits end with trying to get rid of them. I used all over the counter meds, nothing worked. Then I used vinger and oil equal parts and put a cap or bag over the hair for an hour. You will need to wash with Dawn detergent to get the oil out but this worked better than anything I tried. You also have to pull the nits out. I also agree with the other women that said use coconut shampoo by sauve. Never had a problem since. I also advise sending a garbage to daycare to put their coats and clothes in. Best Wishes, D.

I used to work in a daycare and I know a lot of people forget to treat/vacuum their cars! You need to pack up ALL stuffed animals/dolls and really wash clothes/linens. Lice is difficult to get rid of - usually when it "comes back" it means that it was never gone in the first place. You may have to pick the eggs out of your children's hair by hand.

rinse it in apple cider vinegar every day. it's kind of smelly... i know... but better than lice shampoo, or lice! the lice can't stand it! and it makes the hair smooth and cleans off the buildup from shampoos... nice.

It sounds like there is a source they are getting it from. You need to ask you daycare provider to check all kids and treat her home. The daycare provivider also needs to be sure to not allow any children with eggs or lice to attend until they are rid of it. It will continue to be an ongoing cycle if she allows them to attend.

some people smother their hair with mayonaise. some use the over the counter treatments. also make sure you get a lice some that has metal teeth instead of plastic ones after you do the treatment you have to go over each strand of hand. and yes this takes up to to a couple of hours. wash everything! blankets,sheets,clothes, vacum everything! carpets,shampoo throw rugs,vacuum couches,beds, all sides wash all pillows wash all coats anything else they wore. also some people forget; vacuum your car upholestry vacuum and chairs that has upholestry. yes its time consumming but necessary dont forget to wash any hats.
also beware of any friend they hang out with that itches. and if they itch maybe tell their parent. some parents dont know about lice or how to get rid of them. and you also have to do all this again in one week. or you will be reinfested. now im talking about all rooms cleaning and everybody has to be treated. all everybodys beds and linens and blankets. ok?

Hi, I went through the same thing. My daughters both had extremely long hair and after a 6 month battle and trying every lice shampoo and threw away pillows and bleached sheets from pink to white etc. we finally won the battle . Here is how I did it. first change shampoos start using nutragena shampoo the kind for severe dandruff . Use this daily and comb through your girls hair,for some reason I can't explain why it helps. Then on a weekly basis purchase cheap mayonaise and put it in the hair and let it set for about an hour. I also bought real cheap shower caps and put them on,let your girls run and play while the mayonaise is in their hair. Then wash it takes 2-3 good lather and rinses to get it out. This keeps the hair silky making it hard for nits to stick. Then I bought cheap hair ties and put their hair in ponytails, braids etc. For school I would send a empty plastic bag for them to put their coat ,hat and gloves in. Yes this is an extreme action to take but it eliminates that feeling of OH MY WORD my kids have lice !!

It sounds to me like the day care isn't checking the children and taking the proper precautions. They need to be checking the children before they are allowed in the facility again. And they need to check ALL the children. If it were me, I'd talk to the person that is in charge of the facility. If the situation doesn't get better, then I would find another daycare.

Try LiceMD. I bought it at walmart. It works great. Wash all there bedding in hot water and if you have pets give them a bath. Hartz sells a shampoo that kills lice for pets. Use White rain shampoo or shampoo with coconut extract. The coconut suffacates them and white rain apparently strips your hair enough that they can't cling to it. My children go to a public school that has a huge problem with it. After years of trying to find ways to get rid of it this is what has worked. Conbing through there hair with the lice combs every so often after you get rid of them is a good idea also. Good luck.

Try Neem Oil. You can order it online. It destroys the eco system of the bug. It is good for a lot of other things too. It is natural and doesn't have any chemicals to it. Just type Neem Oil in Google. If you put just 20 drops into your shampoo that you already use it helps keep the lice away and destroys the ones that are already there.

First of all do a little research online. Google lice and read the scientific stuff not just the blogs and public posting boards. Just learning a little about the life cycle will help you feel alittle better. For one they can't jump they are not good travelers when not on hair and they can only live 24 hours when not on a human host. The nits need to be kept warm so any of those stuck on hair that fall out are not likely to survive. To get them you have to come in direct contact with them. All the major cleaning is not necessary although it will make you feel better. Anyway I am not really a bug nerd my oldest got them last year and I FREAKED with a capital F. I tried RID it did not work the only thing that did work was mayo the real stuff and a conditioning cap. You need to coat the hair and scalp with mayo cover with a conditioning cap for 8 hours. I had to do it while mine was sleeping I just covered her pillow with a towel and the cap fit her well so I wasnt too worried about it getting over her face although I checked her several times in the night but if you are worried you can take the cap off at bedtime. The mayo will smother the live lice and possibly the eggs. You will need to be sure to remove ALL the nits which takes FOREVER try sitting them in front of the tv with a very interesting movie. Make sure you have good light and start searching. This was recommended by our pediatricians office. I checked mine every day until I found nothing two days in a row and I repeated the mayo on day 10 just in case since eggs take 7-10 days to hatch. I used Lysol on the furniture and carseats and beds this is after I washed and vaccumed all those areas. I sprayed lysol everyday and washed their coats and pillow cases everyday for the first few days. We use the tea tree oil occasionally and also a shampoo called lice free zone. We did cut our daughters hair it will not keep her from getting them it will just make it a little harder. Long hair that is left down can just make a longer rope to climb up if you will. They recommend keeping long hair in a bun or ponytail for the same reason. My daughter looks really cute with short hair and it is much easier to care for and she LOVES it. We tried a lot of the natural stuff I felt really bad for putting pesticides on her. Really the only way to get rid of them is to really work at it everyday for two weeks check daily and remove the nits. Wet hair is easier and I found using my finger nails worked better than the comb. I experimented with the comb I had a metal one and found a nit and then used the comb on it the nit was still there. It is a pain but if you stay on it you will get them and if it is someone at daycare try to demand they do something or transfer. COntact me if you want more info or anything. good luck!

It sounds like the gift of lice is from someone at daycare. Make sure the daycare provider is aware of this problem and if you can find the laws regarding what daycare providers have to do in such cases, providing that might help as well.
