Ways to Soothe Thrush??

Does anyone know of any ways other than medicine to help soothe thrush in a baby? My 4 week old daughter was diagnosed with thrush yesterday - her pediatrician gave us some Nystatin (sp?) to help clear it up, he told me to give it to her for 10 days or at least 3 days after it appears to be gone. I've been boiling all the nipples (which I did anyway) and since starting the medicine she seems to be doing a little better and is back to eating like normal...but I can tell her tongue is still bothering her. She's being a real trooper but I feel so bad for my baby girl and almost like POS dad. Is there anything else I can do other than the meds to help soothe the itching/pain for her? Thanks in advance.

I've also been gently wiping her tongue with a cool wascloth, any other suggestions would be great. Thanks.

And no, she is formula fed, and I'm her dad, not mom. :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Stephanie H., I was just talking to my sister - who recommended the Gentian Violet as well, going to make a quick trip to Wallgreens (which it looks like is the only store near me that carries it) and give it a try - hoping it helps a little. Thanks to everyone who replied.

The gentian violet really helps...but it totally stains!! Random funny story with that stuff tho'...Both my son and I had it when I was breastfeeding him. I put some on me right before going to bed...then he woke up and wanted to nurse. I figured no big deal...he nursed for just a couple minutes and dosed off next to me in bed. The lights were off...after a while I put him back in his crib. Hubby went to get him in the morning and I hear: "Why does ____ look like he has a black eye??" Apparently after nursing his eye rubbed against my 'violet' nipple...and totally made it look like he had a black eye...and the stuff took close to a week to really wash completely away :p.

My son had it and really it was his stomach that hurt. Once that calmed down he was a happy camper.

I guess I am saying I don't think her tongue hurts as much as her totally in love with her mom is thinking it does. :)

Finish out the medicine the doctor gave you.
You can give her a little plain yogurt in her mouth (let her suck it off your finger).

A very old fashioned remedy my mother and grandma used was to "paint" the baby's tongue with gentian violet, which used to be something you could just walk into a pharmacy and get. They both swear by it. Check with you doc first, though - some of these old fashioned remedies went out of fashion because were old fashioned, others because they were found to be unsafe, and I don't know which reason it was in this case. Also, it's the kind of thing your doctor would have to help you find.

Just thinking as I type here - yogurt soothes and helps fix other forms of yeast infections. I wonder if it would help here. No harm in trying, as long as she has no dairy allergies.

Is your baby breastfeeding as well?
If so, then Mommy will need to get treated as well. Otherwise the thrush will keep going back and forth, reinfecting both.

Her discomfort will get better.
Though I know its not easy to see that in our child.

Nystatin is the usual med that is used for Thrush.

Please don't wipe her tongue.
That will aggravate it.

You are doing fine.
All the best.

I second the yogurt idea - "sweep" the inside of her mouth with plain, organic yogurt that contains live cultures (raw would be ideal if you have access to a safe source). The cultures feed on the yeast and should restore the appropriate balance of bacteria and clear up the thrush.

BTW, this is also effective for any other yeast infection, albeit a bit...strange...at first. =)

If she seems upset, try a few drops of Rescue Remedy. This homeopathic tincture is completely safe for all ages, drug-free, and can be very effective for calming children in physical or emotional distress.

There are almost no medications that are approved for a child that young. I would be concerned about side effects. I always sought out natural remedies for my son and found these to be effective and safe.

Good luck, papa!
