Well, I am not the first to ask about this, but what has helped you keep spiders out of your home? We have finally purchased our first home, and I am pretty creeped out about the amount of bugs but especially the spiders. I realize that the spiders are important at controlling the number of smaller insects but yuck...people have told me oh you'll get used to it...I guess mostly what I am afraid of is my young children being bitten. What little things can I do to try to prevent spiders from hanging out inside my house? I already figured out that leaving a pile of dirty laundry on the bathroom floor was a bad idea...(thanks hubby lol) I guess I need encouragement AND advise, will this get better or is it the same all year round in Northeast Texas?? I think I need to get over worrying about it so much but seriously everytime I get comfortable again a huge spider comes out of hiding! Thanks for reading :)

What can I do next?

Bugs/spiders come from the outside.
You need to treat, the exterior of the home and the foundations.
Then, caulk/seal any cracks/crevices on the exterior of the home. This is also where bugs enter a home.

Or, get a pest control company to treat the exterior.
Some spider bites, are very bad. ie: the Brown Recluse Spider. And their bites can leave a really nasty wound.

But yes, Daddy Long Legs spiders, are GOOD spiders. So keep those around. They do NOT bite.

Oh my gosh. I live in a part of California where just about every house looks like the Munsters live there.
I'm not kidding.
They come inside too.
Me? I'm personally not afraid of spiders. In my last house, I had ants really bad in part of my kitchen and I have to admit that I allowed my pet spider to stay in the corner under the cabinets because the ants got stuck in the web and he ate 'em. Pretty soon I didn't have ants there anymore and I retired my pet spider. I gave him a new home in a nice hedge away from the house.
My son is TERRIFIED of spiders. He's 15 and if I hear him screaming like a girl, I know what's up. There's a spider somewhere.
I know a lot of people who bomb the insides of their houses and their attics fairly regularly.
This isn't a fun option, especially if you have kids and pets, but it's pretty effective.
The other thing that helps is to regularly vacuum around your ceilings and baseboards, behind furniture and in the window sills. Vacuum behind doors, inside closets, cupboards, etc.
I don't know of any home remedies other than that, but if someone comes up with one, I'd love to hear it.

Best wishes!

I just moved to TX a couple of years ago and man do the spiders breed BIG here!!! We have a pest control company come out and spray an all organic/natural spray around the foundation and doors and windows. They also put in the garage these sticky bug traps. Inside I do will spray on the hard surfaces a mix of mint oil and water. Shake that up real good before spraying. Supposedly mint suffocates spiders. Vacuum reguarly and break up any cobwebs you see immediately inside your home.

Id be out of there in a heart beat. I am so so so scared of spiders that I actually thought about that hypotherapy thing to help me get over my fear. I remember one year we had a horrible season with wolf spiders in our house and I went to do the laundry one day and as I was cresting the basement stairs one I swear the size of my hand took off under the door to the laundry room. I kid you not, I almost said thats it I cant live here anymore (I was alone in the house at the time too)
Sorry I dont have any advice on how to help but I just thought I would share
Good Luck

If you're really creeped then I'd call a pest control company. We have a ton of spiders too and although I don't really care for spiders myself, most of them live in the basement so I can get by, but whoa nelly, they sometimes crawl across the bathroom or our bedroom ceiling and I don't like it one bit! I have also used Raid roach and spider spray and it seems to work pretty well. You can spray it around the foundation, windows and other areas and it keeps them under control fairly well. Brown recluse are the ones to worry about for sure, do you have those there?? Daddy long legs are technically insects, not spiders. They only have 6 legs, the other two are really long antenae, and they are super deadly, just not to humans, so I wouldn't worry about those. Even if a kiddo does get bit, it's unlikely it will cause a major reaction. You may not even be able to tell between a spider bite or a mosquito bite, but if it starts to look red or inflamed or otherwise weird, then call a doc for an Rx, but that's only happened to me once or twice in my whole life and I've gotten a bunch of spider bites in my day! Hang in there!!

I would be freaked out too! We have built-in pest control that keeps most insects and spiders out of our home. It goes in tubes built into the wall in the garage and basement and seems to work very well! No one is spraying chemicals around where you, your family and pets are. Our company is called Pest Ban. I've heard eucalyptus does a good job at keeping spiders away. I am an arachnaphobe, so I can't deal with them at all. We only see one or two (and usually not too big or scary ones) a year.

Spiders are rampant in Oregon, in and out of houses, and it's really, really hard to keep all of them out all the time. I have gotten used to them and consider them part of the 'local ecosystem.' I vacuum webs away when they get too visible, but the spiders usually survive in their little hidey-holes. We've had many Daddy-Long-Legs, smaller jumping or wolf spiders, and even a particularly large and colorful orb spider living among us for almost 30 years, and have yet to be bitten by any of them.

The one thing I would not tolerate in my home would be venomous spider like a Black Widow or Brown Recluse. But frequent vacuuming will keep your indoor population pretty much under control.

You have to find out where they are coming from, vacum up all of the webs, use an organic spray of some kind, caulk your windows and doors and just keep killing them as you see them. There are a lof of all natural recipes if y ou google natural remedies for spiders. I personally hate them and I have recently become allergic to them so I scream and my husband comes running. Be sure to keep food all put away and clean up crumbs etc. and don't leave water running or have any sitting around you have to keep their food and water source away from them too. If it is really bad I would call a pest control in the area that uses only natural sprays and glue traps Good Luck
