What about a velcro strap? Put it up high enough that the little one can't reach and low enough that the older one can.
: )
My 1 1/2 year old twin boys just learned how to open doors. I bought doorknob covers to keep them out of the rooms I don't feel are safe for them, including the bathrooms. Now, my 4-year-old daughter can't get into the bathrooms by herself. I thought she'd be able to open the doors. She understands how to do it, her hands just aren't big enough. Does anyone know of a product that older kids can open by younger ones can't?

The easiest and cheepest way to deal with kids opening doors they shoouldn't be is to take you existing door knob covers and turn them around. These devices are made for adult hands which are normally bigger than childrens hands, so if you turn them around so the big part is in the back with the small tapered end to the front. They are unable to reach and press the parts together in the necesary manor to make the door open. Also they have these magnetic devices that require an opposing magnet to open, they work wonderfully, I used to use them on the medicine cabinet. They do make larger ones for room doors. You may want to look into either of these options
Hi B.
We have those clear plastic things that snap together over the knob...to open, you squeeze the 2 sides together and twist...our 4 yr old knows how to open them!!!! :)
Thanks!
i just bought the basic round ones with the little rubber spots and showed my four year old that if she put the rubber spot on top and and turned it she can open it. we also bought a doggy gate instead of a baby gate because our four year old can open it.
Hi B.,
If it's the white covers with the little bit of gray we have the same ones. My 4 year old figured out that if he stuck his finger inside the circle opening at the end, he could grip the door knob with his finger and then he could open it. It worked successfully for him and hopefully for your daughter too. :)
When we used them our son (about 3) learned that if he pushed the cover w/the palm of his hand toward the knob and then pulled his flat hand down the door would open....he even helped my folks get out many doors!!! they would struggle and he would say "papa, I'll help you" and go open the door for them (they are not 'old' or arthritic either! just adults who struggled w/child proof things (like most of us)
Methinks it will take just a little trial and error and she will figure it out. My 2 y/o daughter learnt to open the doorknobs with the covers over them, so they've been rendered useless in my house as she is the one I've been trying to keep out of areas she has her "misadventures" in! She holds on to the top of the doorknob and then allows her body weight to twist it open. Strangely, my 4 y/o can open them too, but not as consistently as her little sister.
In either case, I just have the Safety First ones I think they are. I don't know of any others.
Good luck!
Don't know of a product that will do what you ask, however I have a suggestion. Get one of those hooks that you could put on the door high enough for her reach, but the twins can't. That way you forgo the doorknob protector, but she would be able to latch and unlatch the bathroom door. don't know if that sounds like a good idea or not? but it is a possibilty.
I couldn't find door knob covers but as a Child Care Provider I finally hit on a solution that works....Door closers that go at the top of the door and close the door for you. They only take 4 screws to hold them and then I put a changing table right by the door so the babies couldn't slip through....it's been many years and they're still working!!!
Good Luck

I have a two year old that won't leave the doors closed. We bought door knob covers and he figured out how to open them within a couple of hours of putting them on. You don't need a big hand to open them. My son figured out how to put one hand on each side of the cover where the buttons are and squeeze or push down. Perhaps you can come up with a way to teach your 4 year old how to use two hands to open it.
I gave up on door knob covers. My then 18 month old could get them off but, his 4 1/2 year old brother couldn't budge them.
I also had a niece who could undo anything at 2.
Good luck! you are in my thoughts.
