my son will be 1 in 2weeks and i have started weaning which i think is going well. however i have noticed a lump in my left breast now for about 2 1/2 mths. it doesnt hurt unless i get really engorged. i thought it was a clogged duct but have not been able to get rid of it. have any of you had this? i am calling the doc on monday but i am starting to get a little freaked out. any advice is welcome even more weaning suggestions. he nurses once at night and once in the morning. he seems to be cutting himself back because i started nursing both sides each time and this morning he only wanted one.

I had the same thing happen after/during weaning. I put heat on it and massaged it for a couple days and it went away.

I had something similar but it didn't show up (or I didn't notice it) until after I had weaned my daughter and was pregnant with my son. I mentioned it to my midwife and she said it warranted another look from someone who has more experience with that sort of thing. But when I went all they could tell me was that I should get an ultrasound of it. Then, the day before I was scheduled for the ultrasound, it disappeared! My midwife checked, too, and it was just gone! All I can guess is that it was related to weaning. Anyway, you might have it looked at just to see what they think, but in my case it did just go away on its own. Hope this helps! At least you're not alone!

Hi K.! Within about a week of completely weening my son at 1 yr. old I found a lump too. I went to the Dr. and they did an ultrasound and didn't find anything abnormal and has since gone away. Better to be safe and get it checked but don't panic. It may very well be related to breast feeding and nothing more.

K.,
It may not be the same thing, but I will tell you my story... When my first daughter was about 3 months old, I noticed a lump, about the size of a pea and pretty hard, in my breast, but no pain. My doc sent me to get a mammogram and they came to the conclusion that it was a galactaseal (sp) which is similar to a clogged duct--it was explained to me as basically "sour cream." The doc scheduled me to have it sucked out (like a needle biopsy, using ultrasound to locate) and after that it was gone. I went on to breastfeed my daughter until she was 9 months.
Fast forward 4 years to daughter #2. Pretty much right from the start the lump came back, same size, same shape, same place. My doc checked it, sent me in to have it sucked out again. This time, no matter how hard they tried (or how big a needle they used) it would not budge. So the recommendation was to leave it alone, since they knew what it was. Lo and behold, within a couple of months, it was gone and has not returned. I am still breastfeeding my now 2 year old with no problems.
Hope that helps you some--you might ask your doctor about a galactaseal and see if s/he can help diagnose it.
Let me know if you get any good tips on the weaning!!
D.
