Weaning off Bedtime Bottle

Hello,

We have a 1 year old little girl. She is off the bottle except at night. She gets a bottle during our bedtime routine. Lately, it's turned into a game for her. She plays with the nipple, drinks, cries, drinks again, plays with the cap, hits me, fingers in my nose, etc. She is tired. We put her in her crib (wide awake), she rolls to her side and goes to sleep all on her. It's getting more difficult. Our ped. said it's time to take that last bottle away. Can you guys please give me your tips on how to wean off the bottle?

What can I do next?

Sounds like by playing with it she's not real attached to it, so you could go ahead and neglect to have it available. If you find she IS attached to it, gradually lessen the amount in the bottle until it is down to little or nothing and then she won't miss it anyway...that's the route we needed to take with my second son at 15 months, as he was very attached to the bottle. It made for a very smooth transition.

Hi L.,

It was so easy for me with the nuby sippy cups.
The are the closest to a bottle and she gets one at night and in the am so I know she's getting her 16oz of milk no matter what. I've also introduced to her the Sports" bottle which is a combo between the sippy and the straw nuby that I want her on for my Dr. said it was the best to prevent dental issues.
She still gets ne to hold and rock her everynight with her nuby sippy cup, time we both love, only now she sits with me a bit then walks around and drinks the rest of her milk on her own. She's 16 months.
I hope it's as easy with my son! :)
Hope that gave you some ideas.
Amy

Taking it away cold turkey worked for us. I thought it was going to be horrible, but I think my boys just knew it was time!

Hi L.,
I have 3 grown boys. I have never let them have bottles when they went to bed, but with other things like their blankies, I just took them away & they soon learned to do without them. For me, it seemed the fastest was the easiest.

JUST DO IT. Your Ped is right and they have college degrees to back them up. Let her cry until she falls asleep. Tough love is the best love. Your in charge. If you don't prove that now, she'll get worse as she gets older. We have enough kids these days thet don't respect adults, don't let your kid become another one.

Sounds like she is already weaning herself off the bottle. When both my boys got to this stage (they started doing the exact things you mention), we gave it a go without the bottle completely. They did just fine - I was the one that had a harder time realizing my baby was growing up!

So, we kept the same bedtime routine, still rocked and sang (and still do now - they are 15 months and 2 1/2), and they have done just fine!
