Weening from the Breast??

Have you looked into tandem nursing? That may be a better fit for your son, yourself and newborn... especially seeing he seems really attached to the 3-4 times he nurses in a day. Four times really isn't that much of an inconvenience, is it?

I've always wanted to have the opportunity to tandem nurse, but my daughter self weaned at 4.5 and will will be a month shy of 6 y/o by the time #2 comes in July.

I found that when my son started walking, he weaned pretty quickly just using the 'don't offer if he doesn't ask' method. Because at 12 months and walking, he was so interested in everything going on that he forgot about nursing.

My 2nd child also went through this phase right around 12 months old. But I wasn't ready for weaning so I offered a few times a day, and now he's really attached to nursing again! So take advantage of the opportunity when your son goes through the phase where he is more interested in the rest of the world than he is in you.

Congrats on making it so far with breastfeeding. For what it's worth, many women continue to breastfeed through pregnancy and then tandem nurse after the new baby is born. No pressure - if you are not interested in that, then by all means work on weaning. start by replacing one feeding with a sippy cup of breast milk, and after a few days take away another, until you are down to just the 5 am feeding, than work on that last one. Than start mixing a small amount of cow milk in with the breast milk in the sippy and slowly increase the amount so he can get used to the new taste slowly over time. Did you plan to stop at 1 year all along? Or do you just want to stop because of the new baby?

i'm pregnant and still nursing my 21 mo old. my lactation consultant says that many children self-wean during pregnancy. supply goes down, it starts to taste different, then there's the colostrum later on. it's my hope my daughter self-weans, but i'm not seeing any changes yet. i am noticing at 11 wks that i am pretty dried up, but this hasn't deterred my kiddo from wanting to nurse 3 times a day. i feel like a human pacifier!
