Weening off Nutramigen

We ended up keeping my son on Nutramigen for almost an entire year. We tried to slowly switch and his tummy wouldn't allow it. My son had no problems gaining weight (90%) so we began watering the formula down a little bit at a time. We did this with my docs permission. It helped save some $. My 2 yr old had reflux really bad when she was younger. She was on Neocate(very expensive and had to have it delivered from England) and after a visit with the gastro we were able to ween her from it to Carnation Good Start with Cultures (per the doctors suggestion), which is the green can. MUCH cheaper and she never had an issue after that. I transitioned her slowly over a 2 week period increasing the amount of Carnation everyday until the entire bottle consisted of it. Was so glad not to be paying an arm, leg and kidney for the other stuff.

We had the same issue with our son, and you're right Nutramigen kills the bank account! We have our son on just generic store brand lactose free formula now. We just replaced a little bit of the Nutramigen at a time with the new stuff. For example, my son never drank more than about 6 oz at a time, so we started off with 4 oz Nutramigen and 2 oz new stuff. We fed him that every bottle for about a week to give his tummy a chance to get used to it. Then, we increased the amount of new formula and decreased the amount of Nutramigen. Slowly, over about 3 or 4 weeks we got him switched over! Good luck! And paying $13 per can as opposed to $25 per can has helped so much!

We weened off of nutramigen to up and up brand lactose sensitive from Target. I did 1/3 new, 2/3 nutramigen at first and slowly changed the ratios and she didn't have any problems. Ingredients are virtually the same and the cost is $15 for a much larger can. Good luck!

My son was on Nutramigen from 2 and a half weeks old until he was about 7 to 8 months old, because of reflux and some other stuff, but when the pediatrician told me we could take him off, we just finished the can we had and put him on Nestle good start, the green can, he did great! Hope that helps.

I had the same problem with my son too. I made a huge mistake by putting him on a regular formula after the Nutramagin. Finda child gastro before doing that. He may have some serious inflammation or ulceration in his gut so you don't want to start something that coulc be much worse and harder to fix. I don't know where you live, but I would contact someone really good. Maybe even Dr Krigsman who does a lot of gastro work with kids.

Nutramigen may be considered a medication and covered by insurance (it was for a friend of mine. No one told her she just asked)....just something to think about if he is not ready to come off of it.
