Weight Loss and Early Pregnancy

I just found out I am pregnant and am THRILLED! However, I was hoping to loose a bit more weight before I got pregnant. I am at least 20 pound heavier than I want to be. In fact my current weight is what I weighed when I delivered my daughter. So my question is: If I am eating healthy and continuing to exercise (as I have been) is it okay for me to loose weight...or even have a goal weight within reason?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the great advice. Thankfully, my husband bought me an elliptical for Christmas. Makes for a smooth workout. I'm excited to keep up with that throughout my pregnancy. I guess I didn't form the question correctly. I have no desire to loose weight...I just want to be healthy. I guess what I was wondering is...is it okay (or can I expect) to loose weight while I'm in the early stages of pregnancy. Not intentionally, but by happenstance because of continued healthy eating and exercise. ;-) Just a hope, but not as big a hope as my baby being healthy!!! Thanks again!!

I agree with the other responders, that it is best to just continue to focus on being healthy. However, I lost 10 pounds in my first trimester. In the second tri, I maintanied my weight, now that I am 2 1/2 weeks from my due date, I have gained 25 pounds. I do not beleive I am doing anything that different now than in the first tri, but my midwives have never been concerned with my numbers because I was overwheight to start out and I haven't had too many extremes.

I would also say that you should not deprive yourself or let yourself get too hungry, your body is going through a lot and you don't want to strain it. Sometimes hunger can feel like morning sickness too, so try to have a little something even when you don't feel good.

Also, if you have a craving for something, you should indulge in it, within reason. I think our bodies tell us what we need, so if we listen carefully, we can give it the right things. I was craving red meat and then found out I had low iron, so it was good for me to eat it.

Take good care of your body and baby.

Good luck!

Hi, at this point I would probably focus on have a healthy pregnancy, eating well and exercising at least 30 min per a day, as opposed to loosing weight at the beginning. One way or the other you are going to gain weight, but this way you are less likely to gain an excess amount through out your pregnancy. Often times your OB will suggest an amount that is healthy for you to gain based on your starting weight. If you are a bit over weight they will suggest you gain less. It's probably not a good idea to plan on loosing weight right now, but really what matters anyway is how you are after your baby is born. It's easier to reach your target later if you haven't overindulged and not exercised for 9 mo.

J.,

Congratulations! Try to focus on eating healthy, exercising most days of the week and don't try to lose weight right now. Your OB can tell you how much to plan to gain-just relax and everything will be great!

Absolutely not. You should not aim to lose weight while pregnant. Your body is carrying another living being inside. I know how it feels to be close to your goal and yet that overwhelming feeling of ... omg I'm going to blow up like the macy's day float! At least that is how I felt. I just ate right... didn't binge on things we ALL know we shouldn't be eating and I was at the gym and exercising right up until my 9 month mark. I stopped lifting weights at 7 months, but continued to do cardio on the elliptical and cross trainer until the 9 month mark. I gained 22 pounds and when my son was born I ended up being less than what I did when I first got pregnant. But at NO point was I on a diet! I just didn't use my pregnancy to justify eating 4 double double and an entire cheesecake. Just take care of yourself and by all means continue to work out. Just remember nothing that puts you on your back after the 20 week mark and no running on the treadmills. (too much jostling). Eat small meals 5-6 times a day and ENJOY being pregnant. IF you don't take in enough nutrients the baby will find a way to get it from you even if you get sick, pass out, black out or develop a medical condition. So be wise! :)

Just continue to eat healthy do exercises designed for a pregnant woman. You should not try to lose weight, but continue to take care of yourself by being healthy. Remember it is about your baby, you can worry about the weight after. You may find you only gain a little bit of weight with this pregnancy, but talk to your obgyn.
