Weight Loss During Pregnancy

I am 12 weeks pregnant and at 5'4" started my current pregnancy at 217 pounds, definitely overweight due to inability to lose weight after my first pregnancy weight gain of 60 pounds. I stepped on the scale this morning and noticed that I am now 204 pounds, which means I have lost roughly 13 pounds since I got pregnant. Should I be concerned that I am losing weight? My doctor has yet to mention how much weight I am supposed to gain during my pregnancy and I don't see her for another 2 weeks and due to her being out of town am unable to contact her. Has anyone experienced a large weight loss in the beginning months of pregnancy? I am a very healthy eater (lots of fresh fruits and veggies and lean meats), and my eating habits have not changed from when I was not pregnant. Thanks for the help!

Oh, I am Due on July 29th. And my daughter is now a year old. I go see the Doctor on Thursday, and will post what I find out. Sounds like I have no reason to worry though from what everyone has said.

Have you been suffering from any sickness? That can cause some weight loss. If not I wouldn't worry about it , I suffered with terrible sickess in my 3rd pregnancy and was losing weight for the first 3 months and the Dr was not at all concerned , I was a little over weight to start with so he said it won't do any harm , he said they would only be concerned if the patient was under weight anyway and then losing weight.

I was overweight (& still am !) with both my prenancies. My doctor told me on both that losing weight while pregnant and overweight is normal. She just checked the baby's size and movements and heartbeat and it was all normal every time.

I too am about 50lbs overweight and pregnant. My doctor told me I should not gain more than 15-20 lbs with this extra weight. As long as you are not "dieting" during pregnancy and your are eating healthy, watching portions (but getting what you NEED), drinking lots of water...the weight may come off naturally without trying, if you keep losing and don't at least start to maintain, your doctor should jump in. I've lost a few pounds just cutting out sodas and sweets without even trying - and I wasn't eating that much sweets or sodas to begin with! I'm at 13 weeks and have maintained the same weight now for 4 weeks. Doctors aren't concerned. I'm eating healthy and drinking LOTS of water as I had pre-e with my first and don't want to go through that again...so WATER-WATER-WATER! Being this overweight, too, high blood pressure can become a concern, which could also lead to pre-e.

GOOD LUCK and Congratulations!

I am 13 weeks pergnant. My starting weight when I found out before Thanksgiving was 160. Since then I ahve not been able to eat and if I did it would come right back up. I now weigh 136. My doctor is aware. She was slightly concerned. She just told me to keep monitering the weight since I am now able to eat. I figure if the MD is not to worried I 'll take this as a good thing and if I do gain weight and get to 160 again. I'll just break even. Good Luck. When is your due date?

I lost 10 lbs with my second child and I lost 30+ lbs with my 3rd. I weighed about the same as you prepregnancy. As long as the Dr. saw that the baby was fine and growing and I was eating (which I was!) then they had no real concern. Both babies and myself have turned out just fine! Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy.

I lost weight during my first trimester too. I had a very healthy almost 10 pound baby and weighed less after I had her then before I was pregnant. Then after breastfeeding I was down another 10 pounds.

With my second pregnacy I lost 15 pounds in the beginning, my doctor wasn't to concerned b/c the baby was @ the right size and I was eating properly. Everything worked out okay in the end I gained almost 30 lbs. Have you had a lot of morning sickness? I think I would discuss it with your doctor @ your next appointment and if you would think you need to talk to someone before then I would call her office and see if anyone else can help.

Don't freak out. The little bun in your oven is just using a bunch of your energy to start growing. Both of my sisters were over weight when they got pregnant. One lost weight for her first five months and then only put less than 10 pounds. The other one just didn't gain any weight until I think five pounds in the last month. As long as the baby is getting bigger there is nothing to worry about. You should really thinking of adding a little bit of exercise to your daily routine. The healthier you are when you have the baby the easier it will be to lose the weight after. I gained 70 pounds with my first and I was unhealthy so it took forever to start to lose the weight. The second I kept up with a minimal walking routine, I only gained 20. I took most of the weight off (last 10 pounds still allude me) in just a couple of months. Good luck and no worries!

Hi A.,

If your prenatal vitamins are absorbing properly they will help balance out your weight. Our bodies are not meant to hold extra weight so when they are getting what they need, weight loss occurs. That doesn't mean the baby is not getting what he needs. Continue to eat healthy and eat a lot....we need to feed the baby, just make sure it's good stuff!

Congratulations on your little one!

Losing weight when you are over weight and pregnant is VERY normal. When over weight they will usually tell you that gaining a total of 15 lbs is good for you.

I think you are prob just fine.

I had almost the same weight story with my 2 pregnancies.

With my first, I went from 170 to 220 at birth of my daughter. Then I could not shed the pounds, despite exercise, eating healthy, watching calories and breastfeeding:( With my second, I went from 220 to 205 the first trimester, then my weight ratcheted up and down several times, several pounds each time, until I was 215 at birth of my son. Both babies were over 8 lbs and very long, very healthy.

Now, only a light form of Atkins has allowed me to lose around 30 lbs in 6 months.

Have your doctor double-check that growth is normal, and perhaps an ultrasound, or a blood test for ketosis, but if you lose another 10-15 lbs in the next week move your appointment forward. You and your baby will be perfect:)
