Weight Plateau Post Partum

I had my second baby 7 weeks ago. I gained 45 lbs during pregnancy, starting at 128 lbs. Within the 1st 2 weeks after I gave birth I dropped 25 lbs and was thrilled. I have now hit a wall!! I have not lost a single pound in 5 weeks! I'm breastfeeding, I started exercising regularly 2 weeks ago and am eating pretty well. So why am I not losing anymore weight? With my first baby the weight came off gradually and consistently, I never hit any sort of plateau. Is this normal? Any one else out there experience this, especially while breastfeeding? I'm starting to think this weight will never come off!!

What can I do next?

I had the exact same problem as you (except I had a c-sections so was not cleared to workout until after 3 months) So I was really frustrated. I had about 10 pounds to get back to my pre-prego weight, I started taking Zumba classes and LOVE them. I have been taking them for almost two months and have lost 8 more pounds so I am almost there! IT is a slower process than losing the weight with my first, but the classes make it more fun to work out!

If you dr has released you to work out then how about trying Couch to 5K? My youngest son will be 1 on Wednesday and I'm just now under the weight I was when I got prego with him. I have been doing Couch to 5K for just over a week and I have already seen a change. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water and it sucks but you have to be patient.

Since you ARE breastfeeding, it tends to backfire on you after the first kid. Your body will actually hold onto an extra 10lbs or so in order to keep up your milk production.

Once you wean, you'll notice that the rest of the weight drops off pretty quickly.

I definitely agree with everyone else on here, you need to be a little easier on yourself since you are just 7 weeks out from having your baby. I teach a Stroller Strides class in Rio Rancho 3 days a week if you are interested in joining us. It is an awesome workout and since I am a pre and post natal fitness instructor I focus on those muscles that may be out of use since being pregnant. I've noticed the same thing. My 2nd is is 2 months old. With my first, all my pegnancy weight came off within 2 weeks. However this time, I dropped most of the weight quickly, but last I checked I was still 10 lbs over. I just decided to stop worrying about it & figured my body was holding onto stores for breastfeeding.

It's only been 7 weeks mom! You have to remember that it took 9 months to add the weight and it will take time for it to come off. Your body is going thru enormous changes and transitions right now.

And the body does hold on to 5-10 above your pre-pregnancy weight while you are breastfeeding. Pretty ingenious of nature to help make sure there is enough stores for you and baby! After I weaned my son at 15 months the extra 10 I was carrying dropped off. You will continue to lose gradually but just expect that you might keep that little extra around for a while.

Just eat healthy, drink plenty and nurse that new baby!

It was normal with me. I breastfeed both of mine for 18+ months and until they were eating table food and not nursing at night (around 1 yr) I had around an extra 10-12 pounds. At that point I focused on not eating junk or drinking soda (not that I was doing a lot of that with the breastfeeding and all) and I made sure to exercise everyday (walking mostly) and the last little bit came right off. I sort of look at it as the wieght I needed to be to make sure I could breastfeed successfully. If you haven't started back with some kind of physical activity after giving birth, go ahead and exercise and see if you don't drop a few more pounds.

My gosh honey...it has only been 7 weeks:) GO EASY ON YOURSELF!!!! 25 lbs is a ton to drop right away. I had my baby almost 8 months ago and it took Weight Watchers to get the weight to continue falling off. I started 3 months after I had him and lost 23 pounds so far over and above the 17 lbs I lost w/in the weeks post partum. slow and steady gets you the most long term results. Clear it with your docor that you are able to exercise and it will come off but do not starve yourself especially if you are breastfeeding. You need the extra nutrition and calories to make milk.

I personally found breastfeeding to have absolutely no correlation to my weight loss with my first baby as did my sister with her two. I did not breast feed my second and the weight came off MUCH FASTER this time around. I was still carrying baby #1 weight when I got pregnant the second time.

be patient, be smart, and be safe:) It will come off!
