Weird Smelling Vomit in a Toddler

My 3 yr old son has woken up 2 nights this week from a sound sleep, crying and saying he was sick. Within minutes he vomited, and both times it had a horrible smell like fermenting fruit. His appetite has been decreased this week, maybe it's a bug? Mostly concerned about the odor: has anyone ever encounted this sort of vomiting before?

What can I do next?

My kids have thrown up just about every different sort of smell you could not want to imagine. Spaghetti/Spaghettio's being the worst!

It is going to smell however the food mixed in the stomach....plus stomach acid. Whatever they drink on top of it.

My kids were hit with the stomach bug first. That last a week once gone through all my kids. The following week we all had the full blown flu flu.

Just keep hydrated

All I know is that I can remember a few puke episodes that my son had and the smell seemed burned in my nose for DAYS. It can be really strong and overpowering.
I would suggest that this is a stomach bug. There's a lot going around here right now.
Is he running a fever?
Is he lethargic during the day?
Sleeping more?
If you're still concerned, don't hesitate to call the nurse line at your pediatricians office.
Hope it passes quickly.

It sounds like he is sick.
Take him to the Doc.
Lots of things going around at my kids' school and in my city.
Stomach illnesses, included.

Vomit, smells.
And it smells sour or rotten or like fermented foods.
It just smells.

I would be more concerned that your son is saying he is sick and has had diminished appetite .

I'm guessing he had fruit or fruit juice during the day? I wouldn't be too concerned about the smell.

The only time I remember a distinct odor to vomit (other than something obvious like the pizza we had for dinner smelling like pizza still) was when we had Norovirus. Norovirus smells like what I imagine death smells like. Just a rotten, crappy (as in excrement - sorry), foul smell.

There is a new strain of norovirus going around so it may be that or another stomach bug. All you can do if it is a bug is keep him hydrated and wait it out. Hope whatever he has passes quickly and doesn't hit everyone in your house. Be very, very careful when cleaning up after him as that's one way for stomach viruses to spread.

We live in MA too and both of my kuds had a similar bug recently. One was over the vomiting in less than a day, while the other vimited several times in Thursday, seemed fine, and then got hit with it again the following tuesday. Like your son, he woke out of a sound sleep to be sick. They both had decreased appetites for a few days and a low grade fever as well.

I just kept them as hydrated and rested as possible & gave them tylenol when they could keep it down.

Hope your little guy is better soon!

I agree w/ JB...the only really foul smelling vomit I can remember was when we had norovirus...you may want to check w/ pedi for peace of mind...keep on the brat diet...hope he feels better.

I would put him on a very bland diet today.. toast applesauce.. water..

bland foods will sit better on his stomach and are less awful to clean up in case he pukes.
