I am cpr certified from being a medical assistant and have all the supplies to care for 3 additional children (I have 3 children myself)but I was wondering what all I need to do. I plan on going to Texas Dept of Family and Protective Services to become listed but wanted to her what other mothers are looking for in a child care provider.

I was wondering if $125 for a toddler was to cheap or $150 for an infant was to cheap per a week? I am planning on having hours from 5am to 3pm for people that work the 6 am to 2 pm shift.

Any advice you can give about making sure the children I care for will be well cared for?

EDIT: My husband said I should consider doing 6 am to 6 pm, I was planning to offer for toddlers and pre-K Teaching them the ABCs and 123s Colors and shapes as I plan on home school my preschooler. I plan to offer breakfast snack Lunch and snack. Story time, play time, and nap time

What can I do next?

If you know a lot of people who live nearby or work nearby with those hours then you'll do well. You might want to charge a little bit more for toddlers. The reason daycare centers change prices as children get older is because the ratios go up and you have more children per teacher. Home daycares don't change ratios, so you don't have to reduce price for toddlers. You also will need to provide food for toddlers which means more cost for you.

You might want to join an association to help you get started and for moral support. It's the hardest job you'll ever love and it's great to meet with others from time to time.
Best of luck to you!

Unless there's are large companies around you that offer that shift, you might find it difficult to fill that time frame (and have a waiting list for when families leave). Another category to consider is teachers You could offer 7a - 4p hours for them, and still have breaks during summer and holidays (if your budget allows for that). Some teachers may still want some level of care during the summer, so check beforehand.

If that idea sounds interesting, I would contact your local district, and find out when they're holding their new teacher orientation (I know LISD has about 250 new teachers that attend each year). Chamber members have the ability to put flyers in a goodie bag... I don't know if that's open to all businesses or a perk of membership.

Good luck!

I am a mother of 2 and trying to start my own in-home care in aug. there is alot to do...you will have to take a pre-appl. class with DFPS and then fill out appl. and have inspector come out to your home to inspect everything;then if that passed you get a permit. I am going the registered route (not licensing)so I can only have 6 kids during the day and 6 more after school. Ratios are a huge thing in daycare. Your kids are also included in that ratio. You need to go to the orientation b/c they will explain alot more there and then decide if this is what you want to do. the other moms were right about your times--make sure you advertise your times since they are different hours then most. $150 is about average for a toddler up to probably $165-$170. You could charge more for infants. I think it all depends on your experience and background fields and what you are offering as the provider. Hope this helps. S.
