Just wondering if you are letting the high gas prices stop you from doing stuff this summer? Every time I come up with an activity to do my husband says well gas prices are high so maybe something a little closer to home. We are on a budget and so I find free to almost free stuff to do and they are close to home. I don't want that to be the reason we don't take the kids anywhere this summer. Thanks
Nothing. We don't have any vacation planned so just driving to the water park several times per week or staying home to swim...gas isn't a factor. And hubby is in sales so he drives a ton. So we just try to make adjustments in other areas to make up the difference. Good luck!
Well, we had planned to drive home and visit my family in Idaho for the first time since my DD was born... Gas WOULD have been roughly $300 to do it... now it's doubled, so we can't afford that now... We already had it budgeted to the cheapest we could get (mapped out camping areas instead of hotels, figured out the most gas-effecient route, etc.) so with the gas price hike, there is just no way... Which sucks because my DD is now a year old, and my dad is the only one in my family who has had a chance to meet her. Normally in the summer we will drive up to the mountains (about 30 minutes), and spend the day hiking, fishing, etc.... can't afford that either... Sooo... I guess we will be spending this summer with sprinklers and the park. It sucks, because last year we couldn't do much with my DD being a newborn and all, and now we can't because gas is too expensive!

I am taking one trip acorss state (just me and my daughter).
And we are going to do several trips close to home. Luckily we live in a place where close to home offers a variety of different activities. There's tons to do within 2 hours in any direction. =)
No changes. We'll still driving several hours away a few times during the summer to go camping, and we'll be flying to the East Coast at least once for vacation during the summer. If gas gets to $5 gallon then prices for EVERYTHING are going to go up and we'll just have to economize on all areas of the budget.
Our plans have changed a bit. We always go to GA and TN to visit our families, but we've decided with high gas prices that would be all we get to do this summer if we do it so.... we are planning to have fun around the KC area. Go to Branson one weekend, Omaha zoo another, local water parks, picnics, Deanna Rose, etc. We're just going to enjoy what MO and KS have to offer this yhear and we're really looking forward to it. We've been working on a list of what's relatively close. :o) Have fun!

Would it be a hardship for your family to spend that tank of gas? If so, I see his point. If not, he's just being a Debbie Downer.
Sadly yes this year we will have to stay closer to home. I even chose not to renew my memebership at the kids museum. We have a nice one in seattle. getting there and parking are just too costly. I debated on whether itis something I would bus it for. With three kids alone,,,my decision was nope not something I will take on. We have lots of stuff lose to home we can do though. farmers markets, beach, book stores and two nice libraries. If i find myself saying we are bored i will kick my own butt.
Nature walks/bike rides/camping for the summer. Still planning Disney trip to Florida in Fall like we do every year.
One year we got the state travel brochure - the nice one that they keep behind the desk at the travel stops on the state line. Or you can order them from the state tourism dept. We found tons of stuff close by for little to no $$$. We took a zillion pictures - saved brochures and made a "backyard vacation" scrapbook. Our one big adventure that summer was Sea World (we lived in Florida). It was one of the best summers ever.
We have a long car trip planned this summer and the gas prices aren't changing that at all. My husband, though, is working from home more to save money on gas.
Several months ago we bought a more economical car and traded in our gas hog Durango so we see the difference already. We had a trip planned and with 20 hours of driving we started thinking about the price of gas, so instead of paying for hotels, we cashed in some frequent traveler points from my husbands work travel and had hotels for free. We would have liked to save them for another vacation but our vacations come around so seldom we might as well use them up and save money now. I am not much of an outdoor person but I am taking my grand daughter to the park more, and to see the new bridge we have here that is quite a tourist draw. Shes pretty easy to please so I don't have to go out of my way to entertain her. If you look in the flyers and brochures they have at your local hotels you will see all the neat places they advertise to travelers and you might find some interesting spots you hadn't considered. They will all be close to home.
