What Could Be Wrong with My Hip?

My hip has been bothering me for about six weeks. It just up and started hurting one evening after I finished a long walk with my friend. I'd been walking frequently prior to this, and doing workout DVD's so it wasn't like I just exercised out of the blue and my hip started hurting. I thought it would go away quickly, but it hasn't. It hurts most when I've been sitting for awhile, and first stand up. Once I'm up and walking around for awhile, it's fine. I also notice it if I try to lay on that side, or if I happen to roll on that side while I'm asleep, the pain will wake me up.

I suppose I should go to the doctor, I just thought someone out there might have some idea of what this could be. TIA!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responses. I check them out on Web MD and I do have some of those same symptoms. Hopefully, I can get it taken care of.

I was walking and running until I started to have pain just like you. I went to the dr after 6 months of pain. Come to find out I have torn cartilage and a bone cam in my hip joint. Also, I have bilateral L4, L5 disc protrusion in my lower back which is causing the nerve there to be pinched. The pain started out slowly and gradually worsen. I had a cortisone shot in my hip which did not help the pain. I have been on anti inflammatory meds for 30 days now. The meds helped some but I am still having some days where all I want to do is sit. I am going for a cortisone shot next week in my back. I was told that sometimes once you get the inflammation down the pain will go away and not come back. I was doing physical therapy but it was making the back pain worse. Have it checked out right away. I have to wonder if I did more damage by waiting so long before I went to the dr.
Good Luck!

Could be sciatica, which usually goes away on its own, though for some people flares up on and off. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sciatica.

Do you hear popping in your hip? I have bursitis and that was one of the signs. I take Glucosamine/Chondroitin 2 times @ day and 1 vitamin D3. That really helped, also keeping moving is best.
I almost forgot.....I sleep with an ice bag on my hip at night, One of those soft gel ones.

I had something like that happen to me about 8 months ago. Have your SI Joint checked. All the doctor has to do is couple of bending and maneuvering exercises in his office.

I thought mine was my hip as well. The pain you describe whenever going from sitting to standing, as well as rolling over at night is a good indication.

I'm not a doctor but I did just have this happen. Both of my sister's are RN's, sister in law too, we have a few PA's in the family as well. I'm kind of used to hearing all of the medical terms and what not :)

Read the link and see if that sounds like yours.

The symptoms sound like mine. The doctor originally said bursitis, but after x-ray it turned out to be arthritis in my lower back. They think the arthritis is aggavating the illiotibial band that runs from my hip to my knee. Anyway I use Advil or Naproxen if it is especially bad and I can't sleep. I use heat and cold packs. I also do chiropractic, physio and sometimes massage.

stay hydrated, when your body is low on fluid, the synovial fluid around joints goes down and you lose your cushion causing grinding of the joint.

Could be the start of arthritis.

I think it sounds like bursitis from what you describe. You said it hurts the most after you've been sitting AND that the pain will wake up if you happen to roll on that side...those are both symptoms of bursitis.

Get a referral from your doctor to go see an orthopedic surgeon. Don't let your doctor tell you to try physical therapy first, it won't help. If the orthopedic thinks it's bursitis, he'll probably give you a cortisone shot. Hip bursitis responds really well to cortisone treatment.

I had bursitis and exercise a lot. After getting treated, I was back to my regular activity in a few weeks. It's been 6 months now and no pain.

Try taking some Glucosamine / chondroitin.
One a day keeps my joints happy.
If you are on cholesterol meds - they can do a number on your joints.
They recommend taking Coenzyme Q10 to help, and I did but it didn't help me.
I ultimately had to quit taking the statin.
It was a quality of life thing.

I was reading the other posts and always thought bursitis was related to the shoulders and upper arm, so was suprised by that. The other posts are possibilities and while I have had similar things they seemed to have come and gone. I have noticed the difference when I wear different shoes, so even if you are used to walking (and I do all the time), if you wear alternate shoes at other times such as heels, various levels of flip flops or gym shoes you might notice a pattern afterwards with a particular shoe. Just the tiniest change in elevation can cause our back mucles to do different things. Like wise wearing loose clothing that keep falling without a belt (and therefore we walk differently). Good luck. Hope it's just a silly thing.
