What Do YOU Buy at Sam's/Costco?

We recently got a new membership at Sam's. I don't think we've had one for the last 4 years or so!

I'm trying to save money as much as I can. I compare prices at stores all the time. Lately I have mostly shopped at Kroger and Aldi because I find the things we need the cheapest there. However, now that I can go to Sams, I'm adding that into comparison and figuring out what things are best bought there! :)

So what do you like to buy in bulk at Sam's or Costco?

So far I have thought of:
paper towels
toilet paper
vinegar
baking soda
hydrogen peroxide (used for cleaning, not first aid)
flour
sugar - tho it seems it's 2 cents cheaper per pound at Aldi! haha (will go with whatever trip is most convenient!)
tuna (5oz cans)
Velveeta Shells & Cheese (daughter's favorite!)
canned veggies

What else is good to buy in bulk? What have you found that you save money on?

Thanks!

P.S. - no babies in the house at this time :) Only a 6 year old.

What can I do next?

I find that if I do compare prices I don't really save anything by buying at Sams. I do find that I can get some items I cannot find anywhere else in the sizes they have. So I do buy some items there.

I buy stuffed chicken breasts. They are the only place I can find them. They have stuffing in them and a pouch of cranberry to drizzle over it once it's done. I love them. They also have some other items like this. As for cleaning supplies I find that Walmart has the same prices or less.

I love Costco's produce. They have fresh, a lot of organic, beautiful produce. And, the prices for such is fantastic! Most of my other items have already been listed in other posts, but I hadn't seen produce listed yet. We love our Costco membership. We have the executive membership, and I always get at least $80 more than a new membership costs back each year. So, we get a free membership + a bunch of cash when it comes time to renew. Love that! So worth it for us!

I am SO glad you asked this today as tomorrow a representative from Costco is coming to our office and I was trying to decide if I should become a member again - I was before we had children and it never seemed to make sense for the two of us to buy in bulk. Now I have a deep freeze and I like to cook and freeze meals.

During the school year I buy all the things for the kids lunches there ie juice boxes, fruit snacks, chips/ pretzels. Other times I buy breakfast stuff ie those frozen jimmy dean sandwiches , frozen sausages that can be easily microwaved for a quick breakfast before school. I also get dog treats there, when they have the ones we like. This is the stuff that if I got just at kroger then I'd be making more trips and using more gas. But from Sams I can get it in bulk and have enough for a month or two instead of always having to buy those things at Kroger.

I've had a costco membership for 20+ years. We get a few things like muffins, veggie chips, bread, kids gummy vitamins, batteries, generic splenda, butter, milk, nuts, snacks, candy. Most of the time our local grocery store has canned goods cheaper. I NEVER buy fruits or veggies there, it seems like they get moldy in just a day or two. We don't go often because its WAY too easy to have a $400+ hit when you leave! We just get the basic things I listed and usually only go when we need more generic splenda and then pick up whatever else we need at the time.

Frequently used Spices. Shampoos and Conditioners. Vitamins and supplements.

Check the price per unit. I've found grocery store sales usually beat the paper goods and trash bags prices of Sams. Just because you buy in bulk, doesn't mean you are saving money!

I now buy certain things at the grocery store because they've lowere their prices & I an get the cheaper (like canned green beans etc) but I'll add:

-diapers
-rice
-toilet paper
-coffee
-tortillas (best savings yet)
-sliced bread
-vitamins for the kids
-foil, clear wrap
-Christmas candy/cookies for the holidays for sure!

I have two small children and I have found that shopping at Costco is definitely worth my time. I get whatever I can there, then fill the gaps with a trip to the supermarket. The less shopping I have to go and do, the better. 19 times out of 20, both kids are with me, so I really need to get in and out as quickly as possible. Buying in bulk cuts down our grocery bill because I have to go to the store less. You know, that trip to the store where you just went to get a couple of things...and then it turned into 100 dollars? I am guilty of that! So, the less I go the better :)

Hi! I wouldn't step foot in a Sam's/Walmart if it was the last store on earth so I don't know what they carry but at Costco---
Dairy- you can't beat their prices on milk, eggs, cheese
Nutella
organic peanut butter
organic jam
organic sugar
spices
oil
vinegar
pizza---their bake your own is awesome and when they run a coupon they're $6, buy lots and put them in the freezer for "those days"
veggies--the quality of their fresh veggies makes them worth it even if they're a little more, though usually they aren't
dishwasher and laundry soaps- their own
men's jeans
packing tape
batteries
last week I bought a three piece phone for my mom's house
all our cell phones have come from Costco
books
games
etc, etc
Truthfully, we mostly shop in Costco, JCPenney, Restaurant Depot, and Haymarket (like a year round farmer's market). I very seldom wander, but we aren't big users of "stuff" either.

Peanut butter! We go thru that like its air! So much cheaper to buy there!
Butter
String cheese

I haven't been there in awhile, so I know I'm forgetting a lot! Hubby and I went thru one rainy day and priced things to see what would be a better deal...quite a few things are good to get there!

I buy that is cheaper at Sam's than at the local food stores.

Sams is less expensive for
gas
milk and dairy, including cheese
frozen berries,
yogurt
bulk french fries
spices
rice (Not pasta or pasta sauce because its cheaper elsewhere when its on sale)
pickles,
toilet paper
rotisserie chicken and pizza from their deli.

I DON'T BUY fresh meats and vegetables because I can get those things at my local grocery stores much cheaper. Some times I can get those things for half of what Sam's charges. Canned foods are a toss up. Sam's is cheaper some times and sometimes they are not.

Good luck to you and yours.

I LOVE Costco! I go there for price and quality, and mostly for the produce. It's worth shopping there just for th samples!
Here's what I purchase there regularly (and bought yesterday):

Frozen Chicken Breast
Canned Chicken Breast
Canned Salmon
Gluten Free Crackers
Frozen Berries
Frozen Mango
Frozen Tuna Steaks
Colby/Cheddar Cheese (2 pounds for $4.50 yesterday)
Kalamata Olives (2 pounds for $7 yesterday)
Feta Cheese
Bleu Cheese
Field Greens (2 pounds of it there for what I paid for 10 oz at Kroger)
Fresh Spinach
Fresh Broccoli
Fresh Eggplant
Fresh Asparagus
Fresh Red/Yellow/Orange Bell Peppers
Grape Tomatoes
Oranges
Apples
Fresh Lean Ground Beef ($2.99/lb)
Stew Meat
Turkey Breast (not processed, just sliced from a whole breast)
Laundry Detergent
Cascade
Toilet Tissue (Kirkland's brand)
Eggs
Egg Beaters (Kirdland's brand)
Coffee (gourmet coffee...grind it on the way out of the store)

I also tried their Vanilla extract for the first time. Very good and much less than real extract at the grocery store.

I shop there once a month and get those items that I can't get elsewhere or that I know will be cheaper/higher quality there. Everything will be in a large quantity, so only purchase what you can store and reasonably use.

To me, there's no choice between Sam's and Costco. The quality I find at Costco far surpasses Sam's, and often our local grocers.

I buy in bulk anything that won't go bad before I use it up.

An easier way of looking at it is I buy fresh vegetables at a regular grocery store and pretty much nothing else.

I buy bulk meat and portion it, seal and freeze it. I would not do that at Sams, I don't like their beef. Costco has great beef!
