What Do You Think About the Paragard IUD?

At my GYN appt today, the ARNP said that I could consider the Paragard IUD (I'm currently on Micronor) because it's copper/no hormones (I have high blood pressure). I've been researching and I've heard some people love and some hate it. I'd like a few more opinions and stories (success or otherwise) before I make a decision. I'm having a really hard time taking the Micronor at the EXACT SAME TIME everyday. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

What can I do next?

I loved my Paragard. I had it removed to have a baby. After I went to the Mirena because my ob recommended it. I liked the paragard much better! My first period with the paragard was horrible but that was the only problem I had with it. I will be going back to it after the Mirena.

N.,
I never did use an IUD so I can't comment on that. I couldn't take the Pill because they all caused me severe migraines. The choice I had left was Contraceptive Foam and Condoms. Whether the husband liked them or not. My daughter gets a shot every three months for contraception and has never had a problem with it. She actually likes it because she barely has a period. My oldest Sister used an IUD and somehow it slipped sideways and had to be removed. It caused a lot of scarring and pain.

Hi N., of course you know it's different for everyone. I personally would be very cautious because of the negative side effects ( heavy bleeding, discomfort). I would not risk it with "high blood pressure"!
I would like to share something with you to address the high blood pressure condition due to the varies negative side effects that comes again with the medications that are out there.

Blood Pressure & Cholesterol

Ruth Elliott talked me into trying the MANGOSTEEN AND MINERALS for some health challenges I have faced for 13 years. As a registered nurse I was skeptical. I chose to try it because of the money back guarantee & the easy to use daily regimen of a single liquid shot.

After 5 weeks of using the product, I received the best blood results I have seen in 13 years. My cholesterol went from 275 to 174, LDL went from 160 to 98, and triglycerides went from 318 to 231 and my blood pressure 120/80. MANGOSTEEN AND MINERALS was the only change to my routine.”

Blood Pressure (High)
I am only 32 and for years I have had terrible blood work and high blood pressure due to obesity. Even after losing the weight, my blood pressure remained high, but after taking mangosteen and minerals for 2 months my blood work was perfect & my blood pressure was now perfect 122/70…down from 132/84.

I have the Paragard IUD and I love it. I used to take pills and I kept forgetting to take them. I still have a period every month, but I have never had extremely heavy periods with lots of cramping, so I don't mind bleeding every month. I can't feel the IUD and neither can my husband :) I think it is great and I am so happy that I got it. It is so nice not to have to remember to take a pill. Life is hard enough with 2 boys ages 4 and 1!

Good Luck,

K. H.

I've had one for 6 years, and I think it's great. I can't use any birth control with hormones because of migraines. My doc was a little concerned about the copper because my skin is sensitive to metal, but I've had no problems with that. I had some minor cramping and heavy periods for the first couple months, but now it's fine. No cramping, no excess bleeding. But you kind of have to just try one out to see if it works or not.

I got my IUD back in June and I love it...no pain to put in...you bleed like crazy in the beginning, but it's all normal now...you don't have to think about any pills, and the hubby can't feel it. It is supposedly more effective than getting your tubes tied. I think this is like 99.9% effective, and getting your tubes tied is like 99.0% effective. Good Luck!

I got my paraguard in May of this year and aside from the discomfort of having it put in, I have had no problems with it. My periods are the same and I've actually felt better without the hormones from birth control pills.

Hi N.
I've had my paraguard since February of this year and I can tell you that I love it. I had been on other birth control for 14 years but after the birth of my second daughter I would forget to take my birth control so my husband and myself decided on the paraguard. Once is implimented you or your spouse will not feel anything during private time.
I love the paraguard and I wish that I could off gotten it years ago instead of the bill.
I hope this help you...
Good luck

Hi - I had the copper IUD for three years and really liked it. My OB , initially put me on the one with the hormone -- it lasted two months. It caused me so much pain - it felt worse than back labor. I also did not bleed when on my period but could tell i was on it due to all of the back pain. I did not like that. I have never had painful or irregular periods (I am 32). I got her to take it out and give me the copper. I was happy with that. It does make your periods heavier the first few days and I sometimes bled for the full 7 days. ANyhow - a little backround, I do not like to mess with mother nature and alwasy prefer natural remedies to hormones or medication. My younger sister had the IUD with hormones and immediately developed ovarian cysts after having two children and not ever having any difficulties with cysts or other female trouble.

I asked my OB/GYN about using an IUD after my first son was born and he told me I'd have to find another doctor if that is the form of birth control I wanted to use. He said the IUD allowed conception to occur but made it impossible for the embryo to attach and he considered that abortion. I didn't want to change doctors so I've never used an IUD.

I'm assuming this is for birth control purposes? If so, have you considered the Nuvaring? I've been using Nuva for 3 years and really like it...periods are light and only last a few days, and no major pms. It's a once-a-month deal, too, so you put it in and leave it in for 3 weeks. Just a suggestion.

Hi,N..Obviously,what's good for some mat not be for others. My BF decided on the Paragard IUD and she hasn't been the same since. She has random periods several times a month.A significant amount of time has passed and her situation remains the same.I,personally, would not follow through with the ARNP's suggestion.I hope you will find a comfortable option that suits you.Good luck!

You either love it or hate it. I for one LOVED it. I had it in 18 months then we decided to try for another. I hate hormone pills they just mess with your body to much. The paragaurd it simple and you dont have to think about it. The only way you will know if you like it is to try it. I will say the first few months after I got it my periods were heavier but then they went back to normal. I think my body was adjusting to something inside it. Wit hyour BP issues I think you might really want to consider it. And if you hate it they can take it back out easily. Also check with your ins. on whether they pay for it and the removal. Mine paid for the insertion but not the removal, dumb I know.

I have had this exact IUD. I kept mine in for about 2 years. I was trying to go the "no hormone" route.
I thought that this IUD was ok. I had a lot of breakthrough bleeding (spotting) and eventually had it taken out about a year ago. I liked the convenience of not having to remember my pill everyday, but the spotting really became a problem for me.
Just to warn you - having it put in was not fun at all. It was very uncomfortable. Having it taken out did not hurt at all. I think I have a high pain tolerance, but with a little advil, I was fine. No one tld me that, so I was not prepared.
I hope this was somewhat helpful :)

Hi N.,
I have had a copper IUD for about 4 years now. I like it now but in the beginning it wasn't to fun for me. I had a lot of cramping and long and heavy periods. Again that was at first and they tell you that all of those things may happen. Other than that I love that I don't have to remember to take a pill at exactly the same time everyday. So good luck with you decision.

This can be an effective method of birth control, that you don't have to 'remember'. It is not difficult to place when done in experienced hands. The other consideration is the Mirena (LNG-IUS) which is similar to the copper Paragard IUD but has a small amount of a progestin (similar to Micronor) that is on the device. Your periods are usually lighter with the Mirena, whereas with Paraguard - your periods may be a little heavier.
