What I Can Do to Relieve Itching from Hives

Last night I took my daughter to a friends house, and she was petting his dog and her hands started getting swollen spots on them that itched. I had to go to dance class, but I told my boyfriend to get her some benadryl to put on her skin. I got home from dance class and she had hives all over her body. He got Zyrtek from the drug store, but it doesn't seem to be helping so far, she says it itches pretty much. From what I know about hives, medically the only thing to do is an antihistamine. Is there anything else that worked for any of you to relieve the itching? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Don't forget hydrocortisone cream. You can use that w/ Benadryl. Since she had hives all over her body, you might want to give her oral benadryl. I don't know if you can combine it w/Zyrtec though. Just call the pharmicist or your Dr. to find out. Since it is going to be hot & sticky today, I'd try gold bond powder after you give her the Benadryl.(It has active ingredients similar to Noxema.) Oh, if you give her liquid Benadryl, don't use the Benadryl creme too, just one or the other. Just try to keep her skin cool & dry today to help lessen the hives & prevent a flare up. Heat really aggrivates hives. I used to break out in hives all the time & still do sometimes. I feel your your daughter. There is nothing worse than an uncontrollable itch! If all else fails, a cool bath feels good! You might want to follow-up w/her pediatrician since she had a relatively strong reaction to touching a dog, especially if she has frequent contact w/dogs. Oh, since you're a nurse you know to call the Dr. if her eyes are swollen or her face puffs up. Good luck!

Definately oral Benadryl. In liquid or pill form.

I assume you meant she was petting his dog. Be sure she washed her hands well. When my kids had itchy problems (chicken pox, poison ivy) it helped to take an Aveeno bath. Also, now I didn't try this on the skin, but when one of my daughters had chicken pox, she got them inside her private area and was going nuts with the itching. The doctor had me use Noxema! I know.. weird thought, but it helped immensely. You might try it.. it wouldn't hurt anything to try. Good luck !

Hi J., My 16 year old daughter has the same issues. She takes Benadryl in pill form. There is also the liquid. It does put her to sleep after awhile, but really helps. I do not usually put anything on the spots unless she has scratched them so much that they actually hurt. I would try the benadryl liquid or pills if your daughter can swallow them. Good luck. Carry them with you and the first sign that you see give it to her immediately.
