My daughter will be 1 this summer. I was wondering at what age moms start swim lessons. She loves the water and I definately want her to learn since there are several pools in our neighborhood.

TYIA!

I put my son in swimming classes at 5.5 months. He was supposed to be six months, but they made an exception for him. The earlier, the better. He is 17 now and he swims like a fish!!!

Hello Jodi,

I started my daughter at 6 months and she loves it! She is 14 months now and is like a fish in water. We attend Emler Swim School and am very happy with the teachers.

I started my oldest son (now 4) at 6 months with Emler! We love Emler! I would recommend there over somewhere like the YMCA - especially for that age.

I personally would wait until four to really try to "teach" them to swim. A mommy and me class for fun to get them used to the water is different. We put my daughter in lessons at age 3 and she was totally traumatized by them making her go under water (she was at a very reputable school in Plano). It took a whole year after that just to get her comfortable in the water and a very compassionate and good swim teacher at age 5 (Paige Hudec at Metroplex Gymnastics and Swim) to teach her to swim. We waited until my son was four to give him lessons and he was swimming well in two weeks. Of course all kids are different and personality definately plays a part. Good luck!

The City of Richardson has wonderful Mommy and Me swimming lessons for babies starting at 6 months old. The class really teaches you to swim with your baby. My oldest son was 11 months old when we started these swimming lessons with him (my husband attended most of the classes too). There are morning classes and evening classes. You don't have to be a resident of Richardson to sign up for the class.

My son just turned 1 in March and we are taking a parent tot swim class in June to just get him familiar with the water. Most communities offer one of those classes to kids as young as 6 months. It's not so much to teach them to swim, but to just get comfortable with the water.

Both my children were in the water at 6 mo and swimming on their own by 15-18 mo. We did the mommy and me classes with Miss Kelley's Let's Go Swim School in Frisco. Kelley is a local swim instructor who is GREAT with kids. I know she is booking classes fast---###-###-####.

i think 3 to 4 yrs is a good age. (really closer to 4yrs) Been there done that with my 2 older boys and i think starting them before 3 is a waste of time and money!!!

I started both of my kids at 1. Look into Infant Swim Resource(ISR). They start with teaching them to know how to survive if they fall in, then go into teaching them to swim. It is a must have if you have a pool at your house.
