WHAT Is This GUNK in My HAIR?!?!

Seriously... I love my hair. I never put weird products in it, I never dye it. It's long & strong. For the past six or seven weeks, however, I have been getting this weird gunk in it, by the roots, when I shampoo. It feels almost sticky, like old hairspray or something. I switch shampoos often and use a clarifying shampoo a couple of times a week to rid build-up, but I've never had this happen. When I first noticed it, I had just bought a new bottle of Pantene. I thought "gross!!" and I thought maybe I had forgotten to rinse my hair correctly or something. But when it happened the next day, I knew it wasn't me. So I used a clarifying shampoo and it went away. Needless to say, I discontinued use! I bought Aussie brand, which I hadn't used before, and now that's doing the same thing! What the heck is doing this to my hair?? And what brands can I buy to AVOID this nasty gunk? It makes my hair look like I haven't washed it in days!

What can I do next?

Do you swim? build up of Chlorine in hair can make it feel sticky and gross. This happens to my kids when they do a lot of swimming. I use Malibu Swimmers Action shampoo and conditioner on their hair. It gets rid of all the chlorine build up and leaves it nice and soft.

I hope you get a good answer because mine is doing the same thing! I have fine, thin shoulder length hair, and I do color it. I thought maybe that was the problem. I also switch shampoos often. I got a clarifying shampoo to try after my stylist suggested it, but it didn't really help. My husband has dandruff and he suggested I try head and shoulders. For some reason, that worked, but my hair felt fluffy or something afterwards. I used it for about a week, then went back to my other stuff and the problem went away. It happened again last week and for the moment is gone. It feels sticky or greasy. I blow-dry my hair, and it seems like it won't dry when it happens. It is very heavy on top, if that makes sense. All I can come up with is my water. It is horrible! It is drying out my whole familys' hair and I have quite a bit falling out. Hopefully you get some good suggestions!

3 top causes of sudden hair "gunk" ;)

- Fungal infection

- Lice (doesn't always itch right away while it's just the eggs building, which can take weeks)

- Allergic Reaction

This happened to my daughter last summer. It felt gummy and after research, I realized that her hair was damaged. I bought some hot oil treatments and deep conditioning treatments and it got better. At first we thought she had something in her hair that wasn't coming out, but that wasn't the case.

I'm wondering if you are using a smoothing shampoo - in other words, one for frizzy hair. I noticed with Pantene and Aussie smooth or anti-frizz, that my hair feels clumpy and like I haven't rinsed it completely even though I have.
