Dyson! Any model. Get O. sale at Target. I wouldn't trade mine for anything. I have the Dyson Drive (car kit attachment) but I don't use it for the cars. It's great on tile, wood and carpet!
My family and I are buying a house next month and I need a new vacuum (the old one was horrible and the trash got it). A little back ground; single story house, carpet in the bedrooms only so it needs to be good on hardwood floors also. I prefer bagless, so tell me what your favorite cost effective vacuum is.

Dyson. Expensive but worth every penny. It's almost disgusting how much dust and dirt you end up vacuuming up. Until then, you never realize how dirty your floors really are.
I have 2 Hoover's that still work great. One upstairs and one downstairs.
About 2 yrs ago, I bought a top of the line Oreck and LOVE it. It is SO lightweight, does a great job. 10 yr warranty and I go in once a year for routine cleaning, belt changes, etc. It is not bagless, I don't like bagless.
My mom has a Dyson and HATES it.
Personally, I have always liked the Kenmore line from Sears. A friend of mine got me started; I still have mine from college and it works great, and I got another friend started on it. While they make changes through the years, all of the models are incredibly easy to use...especially when it comes to attachments. I used the canaster variety. Go to your local Sears and try them out...they have test carpets and everything.
Miele...hands-down. Go to a specialty store. They will tell you not to buy a Dyson even if they sell them.
I just researched vacuums a few weeks ago when we needed a new one and the frontrunner with reviews by far was the Bissell Momentum Cyclonic. I honestly don't care much about vacuums one way or the other but even I have been impressed. It really does a fabulous job (scary how much dirt it sucks up), is lightweight and easy to move around and is sturdy. We were originally thinking of a Dyson, but the reviews were really spotty -- some raves but also a lot of complaints about pieces falling off and poor quality. The Bissell model had consistently excellent reviews and was much cheaper.
Check out the reviews on websites for major retailers such as Target, Sears and Amazon and I think you'll make the same conclusion. Good luck!
I had a bissell and loved it (cheap one). Traded up for a Upright Eureka ( more expensive). hate the Eureka. Way Too heavy.
I will try another Bissell when I replace the Beast
Dyson - I have the animal - it's over 6 years old and doing great! We are a family of 5 and a Bordercollie/Australian mix (HAIRY) and the vaccuum is awesome! It also has a hardwood floor setting that I use on the tile/wood. I got mine at Bed/Bath and Beyond and used the 20% coupons you get in the mail (if you do) and it saved almost $100!
I had a Dyson and it was the best bagless on hardwood/bare floors. IT was a little heavy and after about 4-5yrs stuff started breaking off. The upright piece was the last thing to break but I still used it holding on to the handle of the canister. I finally got a new one and gave the Dyson to my neighbor who will still use it. It would have cost me around $200 to fix it but decided to get a new vacuum instead.
I like the one that has another person pushing it! heheh
Enjoy your new home.
Blessings....
We've had our Dyson Animal (purple one) for almost 5 years, and other than my clumsiness and dropping it a few times, it's held up really well.
We have laminate floors that I choose to sweep/mop instead of vacuuming, but I'll take the telescopic arm around the baseboards to get dust, etc, and it's easy to operate.
I'd like to check out the rollerball one to see if it maneuvers better, but overall, we've been really happy.
