My preschool puts sunscreen on the kids before outdoor play - but only during the summer months. What about yours?
at the daycare we go to in San Diego, i just have to drop off a labeled bottle, and fill out a waiver form (so they are allowed to apply it). they toss the sunblock after a year. they typically send out reminders for parents in the spring - since the kids are wearing longer sleeves in the winter - but it's not a summer only application in southern California.
I'm surprised it's not a policy since kids are more prone to burn. My little one is in a daycare setting but I keep sunscreen in the side net pocket of her backpack and if the babysitter mentions they are going to go outside I have taught her to get the sunscreen out of the pocket and give it to the babysitter and mention to her to put on her sunscreen :) Must work b/c the days they go outside she smells like sweat and sunscreen.
Ours does not apply sunscreen at all. We have to apply before dropoff and hope it lasts all day.
I own a preschool and we start in the spring. We ask parents to apply in the morning before school and we reapply (with sunscreen they have provided and labeled) in the afternoon. If it is really sunny and hot we won't bring the children out in the afternoon. All of our waterplay summer activities are in the morning.
Every spring we sign a waiver allowing my daughter's preschool to apply sunscreen--the preschool provides the sunscreen and even "sensitive-skin" kinds. The kids go outside twice a day and it is applied both times.
Wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses are encouraged but not mandatory.
I live in a northern climate, so it's only during the spring, summer, and fall. In the winter the kids are bundled up in jackets, snow bibs, mittens, hats, and boots!
Both when we lived in socal and here the policy was the same; parents needed to apply sunscreen before dropoff at preschool, and it needed to be "invisible" aka rubbed in all the way.
Elementary in Huntington Beach & in Poway School District (several years ago, not sure the current policy), kids could apply it themselves IF AND ONLY IF they didn't horse around with it/ get it on the carpets (or other students). If so, it would be confiscated, and returned at the end of the day with a note pinned to the back of your shirt. In middleschool & highschool, sunscreen wasn't allowed in backpacks or classrooms, but was to be kept in your gym locker or school locker.
Parents apply at home during the summer.
They apply sunscreen all year round, and full coverage hats. No one, including the teachers goes into the playground without a hat.
My son isn't in summer school, but it is not the preschool's policy to apply sunscreen to our children. I'm sure if I made a special request, they probably would, but I usually just apply it myself prior to drop-off on days I think it will be an issue. He's only there for a few hours.
Mine is like yours. They put sunscreen on the kids during the summer before they go outside.
The parents have to apply it. I think SD system is quite strick about "touching" and my daughter goes through toddler-8th grade under city bylaws.
we have to bring our kids with sunscreen already on them, which I hate, and they reapply if necessary. I wear suits to work, so I cant let my dd hug me goodbye while she's slathered in sunscreen already and I hate that.
