What Kind of Bread to Feed a One Year Old

My son is several days from being one. He seems to like bread. We give him a little when we eat sandwiches and he loves cheese so I am thinking of making him some cheese sandwiches for his meal. I heard white bread is just refined sugar and wheat bread is allergenic. So I am wondering what type of bread would be okay to feed an one year old? I don't know if I should feed him breads that are too grainy though it might be healthier.

Thanks.

What can I do next?

I have always eaten white bread and so have my kids. My 1 year old eats it. I don't think I would really worry about it if I were you. It is up to you though...if you don't like white then give him wheat. There is a Sarah Lee brand that is for kids. You could try that.

OK--I think everyone needs to calm down a little on the white bread issue. Of course, whole grain bread is better and keep in mind that if he starts eating it now, he will prefer it to the white bread. But if you give him a cheese sandwich on white every once in awhile, it's not going to hurt him!
People need to acknowledge that every time they get their kid a Happy Meal, their kids are getting a white enriched bun. Another reason it's a good idea to keep the healthier stuff on hand at home.

My 3 yr. old son loves bread. I buy the Sara Lee - White, Raisin and Blueberry breads with whole grain and fiber. I also give him whole wheat.

Edit: Just bought a new bread today. Butternut, All Whole Grain 100% Whole Wheat. No preservatives, no white flour, good source of fiber, excellent source of whole grain. Gave a slice to my son tonight and he really liked it. So I recommend it.

We eat whole grain bread and so does my 16 month old. Give your child what you eat, but in tiny pieces, whether it's bread or meat or anything else. Good luck!

I avoid the nut breads - I think that is for 2 years, but am just fine with wheat bread, unless there is a wheat allergy in your family. I think that the brand is Orrowheat, but I might be wrong. What are you eating?

GIve him good stuff for sure...wheat, rye, oatmeal, but not white! It is basically just junk. The bread we use is fairly grainy and our son has been eating it for a few months (he's 11 months). I would suggest toasting it if you give it to him just plain because untoasted bread can get super mushy and possibly be a choking hazard. Also, grilled cheese (and maybe even some ham or turkey) are great, but a "regular" sandwich would probably be too much for him to figure out. Sometimes I just deconstruct a regular sandwich if that's what I'm fixing and give him toast, pieces of lunch meat and pieces of cheese..works great!

whatever you choose... keep in mind that bread/cheese (when it gets gummy from being in the mouth) can be a choking hazard. My daughter when 1 years old, choked on bread.
Make sure also that he does not over-stuff his mouth or take too big of a bite. Which kids this age and older do. They don't know how to portion or how much to put/keep in their mouths.

100% whole grain bread with at least 3g of fiber. Try to buy ones that you can actually pronounce all of the ingredients.

Whit bread, is junk. Everything in moderation, is fine. If you will be making sandwiches often, don't go with white!! White bread has gluten, too. It is just as allergenic as wheat. 100% whole wheat bread, is the best. If did well with white, he will most likely do well with wheat.
